Where did you buy yours from. Is Europe starting to tax each other or is that as a result of Brexit?

Hi guys,

I applied via this forum from the Chess House in the U.S.A, but I thought postage and tax was included, so my £30 discount was offset with £28.27 postage and now a bill for VAT at £34.23 and an Admin fee of £12.

Total price:

£190 (Chess House price after £30 Hiarcs discount)
£28.27 (postage)
£46.23 (FedEx VAT & Admin)
————
£264.50

That is interesting so when you buy from USA you get taxed? Vice Versa I have never had to pay tax from buying from UK or Europe. Some states have to pay a sales tax if they buy something from another state. But import tax I have not had to pay that yet fortunately. Computers could be taxed but electronic games not.

Maybe you should have asked them to ship it as an electronic game instead of using the word computer since its not a computer you can't do anything with it other than play a game of chess.

Best regards
Nick

That’s the first time I’ve been taxed, I have emailed the Chess House, let’s see what they eventually say ...

I was just wondering if anyone in the EU has had a similar Duty & VAT invoice?

Hi Al

As far as I am aware you always pay tax on imports from America.

Have a read of this.

Exactly,

I imported two chess computers from the USA and got taxed twice.

Never again… Paying tax on 20 year old "products". Ridiculous.

Well you can't blame USA for that. It's your own Government that is collecting from you in addition to your 20% Sales Tax or whatever you pay and the 50% or whatever income tax :)

Wow you add all that together and you only make 20 cents on a peso when you go to work :)

Add to that house tax, death tax, church tax, gasoline tax, TV tax and crossing the street tax and the mind boggles, we are all slaves to tax.

Best regards

Sadly it's the norm, and FedEx are red hot on collecting their admin fee so they don't miss much.

Thanks everyone,

I also got a reply from the Chess House today:

“We just implemented a new option in this last week that gives an option to pay taxes and duties ahead of time as part of the shipping costs, but that was not available during the time you placed your order.”

I’ll pay what’s owed today, lesson learnt.
