Star Diamond v London Pro-Commonwealth Computer Chess Cup!
Hello All,
Here is the start of the winner takes all game between my Star Diamond and Larrys' Berlin London Pro. I wanted to call it the World Championship but everyone is using that nowadays
Time controls are 1 hour per move played. The Star Diamond is white which I hope will go toward reducing the 100 elo gap between the machines. The Star Diamond is on it's default settings and I think the London Pro will only have it's tournament book selected (Larry?)
The Star Diamond is fresh from humiliating my Atlanta so moral is high for the first move, which is.........
1 e4
and boy did I breathe a sigh of relief when this came out! A few days ago when I was playing as black against it it played 1 b3 so I was rather nervous it would play an obscure opening from it's 123k opening book.
Conditional replies are.....
If 1.....e5 then 2 Nf3
If 1.....c5 then 2 Nf3
If 1.....d5 then 2 exd
Chess cup regards
Paul

OK Folks, Larry is going to be PM'ing me his moves so I'll keep you updated as we go along.......
I can confirm that the LP has it's tournament book setting switched on.
The game so far is
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 *
Bringing us to the following position
[fen]r1bqkbnr/pppp1ppp/2n5/4p3/4P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKB1R w KQkq - 2 3 [/fen]
I'm hoping that this evening the Star Diamond will play 3 Bb5 (after which the LP will play the conditional move 3....a6) and not follow the example of the Atlanta in game 2 of their match where it played the Italian opening and the Atlanta eventually lost the game painfully to the Star Diamond.
Shaping up to be an interesting match regards.

Many thanks Steve
The game continues with
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 *
Reaching
[fen]r1bqk2r/2ppbppp/p1n2n2/1p2p3/4P3/1B3N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQR1K1 w kq - 1 7 [/fen]
with the conditional if ......d6 then c3.
As this is probably as main line as a Ruy Lopez can get it will be interesting to see where exactly both machines come out of book.....
Curious regards
Paul

i also just changed you fen so the White pieces show from the bottom
make certain there is a w in the place where i have underlined below
sometimes the software places a "b" (black from bottom) instead
r1bqk2r/2ppbppp/p1n2n2/1p2p3/4P3/1B3N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQR1K1 w kq - 1 7

Thanks Steve,
I'm without Fen posting abilities again until Thursday as I'm away in Inverness visiting my new niece for a few days. I have brought the SD with me so I'll make as many moves as my wife will allow
play continues with
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8. c3 d5 9.exd5
with the conditional if Nxd5 then Nxe5
Both still in book regards

Any man who would bring a dedicated chess computer along on a holiday with the Mrs....deserves IMMEDIATE induction into the Schachcomputer Hall Of Fame!
CURRENT POSITION

hopefully we will be treated to Larry's comment's every now and again as the game progresses?
he has grown strangely silent..
i guess he believes very strongly that there should be complete silence while a chess game is underway

very good PaulWardy wrote:I'm sure Larry will become more vocal once we are out of book and the game becomes more interesting............it's a very standard position at the moment, even I know this line as white!
but with Larry choosing for some reason to PM you his moves rather then relay them here himself..and now with his deadly silence..
just in case your computers play this line out for 16 or so moves..perhaps Larry can just come here and sign with an "x" or something
Where Is Larry Regards?

BOO!!...Here I am back again. Sorry to all if I've been silent on thisSteve B wrote:very good PaulWardy wrote:I'm sure Larry will become more vocal once we are out of book and the game becomes more interesting............it's a very standard position at the moment, even I know this line as white!

game, but I have'nt checked into the forum for a few days, been a bit
busy, just checking the next book move, relaying it and moving on.
I've been PM'ing the moves to Paul to keep the thread to a minimum,
I thought maybe too many posts would sort of crowd out the game.
Of course the other reason is that neither comp has started processing
moves yet, just pulling them from a data base. If you like I'll start
sending LP's moves direct to the forum soon as either machine's book
runs out.
I'm not an officionado of chess openings, but this one looks to me
like a Marshall Attack. I could be wrong. As everyone knows, Frank
Marshall was well know for his attacking prowess. It was said that he
would fall so much in love with a great board position he could'nt bear
to part with it.
I do know that the computers generally go quite deep into the Ruy,
or Spanish, as some call it.
my best to all
Larry
