World Championship Winning Computer Chess Software Program & Downloads for Chess Databases, Analysis and Play on PC, Mac, iPad and iPhone — Visit: Hiarcs.com
Recently I was looking for a simple chessprogram with personalities and I remembered NagaSkaki, that I had years ago.
The site of the author isn't online anymore, but thanks to the Internet Archive WaybackMachine, I found it at http://web.archive.org/web/201812211005 ... ory/chess/
Downloading there isn't possibe anymore, but can be done at: https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/nagaskaki.html
Installing isn't necessary, just download and unzip and you can play, even from an USB-stick.
There are 10 personalities, but you can also make your one ones and save them within the program.
The rating of the latest version (5.12) is 2188, according to https://ccrl.chessdom.com/ccrl/4040/cgi ... +opponents
I downloaded the progam and am enjoying it now. I intend to elo-test the personalities with Hiarcs ("Match player strength").
Here is what the author says(08-05-2012):
"NagaSkaki is a freeware chess program for Windows.
What makes NagaSkaki different from most other chess programs is the personalities. Some personalities play so weak, almost everybody should be able to beat them while others are strong enough to beat most chess players.
This makes it a perfect program to learn and enjoy chess, cause who likes to always lose against a computer?
To get a rough idea of the strengths of the different personalities, we’ve run a little tournament and here are the results:
Personality/ Score/ Rating
NagaSkaki 4.00/ 65/74 / 2300/
Zara / 64.5/74 / 2297/
Pete Damn / 53/74/ 2126/
Joan/ 46/74 / 2075/
Neo/ 46/74/ 2069/
Raspoetin/ 44.5/74/ 2051/
Clair/ 24/74/ 1876/
Reckless Dave/ 19/74 / 1825/
Dr. Felix / 5.5/74 / 1599 or less/
Miss Molly/ 2.5/74 / 1472 or less/
Notes:
We’ve assumed that NagaSkaki has a rating of 2300
The rating of the last two personalities is probably even lower, because they could only win against each other and not even draw a single game against the rest"
After the first 10 games against Hiarcs at 5 s per move, the personality NagaSkaki has a rating of 2393, 8 wins and 2 draws in game 9 and 10.
Description of this personality:
"This is default and (hopefully) the strongest personality. Personality ranking: 1"
Personality Settings:
Positional 120, Mobility 100, King Safety 100, Passed Pawns 80, Blunder Factor 0, Playing Speed 100,
Value of Pawn 100, Knight 310, Bishop 320, Rook 500, Queen 1000.
These are the kind of values that can be used when creating an own personality.
I will play 10 more games so that we get a more stable rating.
Hi Brian, I am satisfied with the standard pieces NagaSkaki uses.
There are 5 sets with pieces and I like the Challenger Pieces most.
I made a screenshot and saved it on my pc, but I couldn't find a way to upload it here.
In the meantime, 12 games have been played and NagaSkaki has now 2373 elo (+9 -1 = 2). Eight more games to go, but I was busy with other things the past few days.
Both Hiarcs and NagaSkaki play on my laptop.
The programs are side by side on my screen and I play with the mouse.
So both programs play with the same hardware and software (Windows 10).
Here are the specifications that I found in my system information: Intel(R) Core(TM)i3-7100U CPU @ 2.40 GHz, 2400 MHz, 2 core('s), 4 logical processors.
Pff, hard to type that over without mistakes.
The programs play both without pondering.
Two more games played this evening, score NagaSkaki is now 2440 (+11 -1 =2)
Next candidate is Miss Molly, the weakest at the bottom of the list, with an estimated elo of 1472 or less.
The programmer: "Miss Molly only recently discovered chess and it shows! Personality ranking: 10"
Personality Settings:
Positional -50, Mobility -200, King Safety 60, Passed Pawns -50, Blunder Factor 500, Playing Speed 0,
Value of Pawn 300, Knight 600, Bishop 320, Rook 300, Queen 400.
I'm curious if she can score at least half a point.
Miss Molly did it, earned her first point.
Here is the game.
I was positively surprised by her final move 76.... b1=Q.
Many programs, playing at a low level, choose for minorpromotion, which is not realistic because a low rated player wil usually choose a Queen.
Miss Molly and Hiarcs just played their 18th game in 191 moves, ending in a draw because of the 50-move rule.
Miss Molly managed to make three(!) underpromotions into a Knight, movenumber 102, 133 and 141.
End position: white Kc3 Nb3 Nd3 Nb5 Nd5, black Kf8
I bought my first chesscomputer in 1981 and saw many comp-comp games, but never something like this.
For who wants to see the whole game, here it is. Have fun.
I decided to pit NagaSkaki, running on my Gaming PC, against TASC R40. Game 1 went to NagaSkaki. Opening was a Sicilian Defense, French Variation. The game was closed for the longest time, but NagaSkaki broke through with an amazing Kingside pawn push. The tactics were such fun to watch I played it to mate.
In this position, White (NagaSkaki) played...

After 20 games, Miss Molly scored 632 elo (15%, +2 -16 =2), better than I expected.
Next candidate is Dr Felix with an estimated elo of 1599 or less.
The programmer: "The result of another one of Prof. Chessterniks crazy experiments- a cat playing chess! Personality ranking: 9"
Personality Settings:
Positional -500, Mobility 400, King Safety -300, Passed Pawns 900, Blunder Factor 800, Playing Speed 10,
Value of Pawn 300, Knight 300, Bishop 300, Rook 300, Queen 300.
Can that cat score better than Miss Molly's 3 out of 20?
