DGT Centaur vs. Millennium King Performance

Post by TracySMiller »

Now to match up the big boys. The extremely strong Millennium King Performance vs. the uber-strong DGT Centaur set to Expert Mode. Game 30 time controls.

Game one saw a brutal assault from the Centaur. The attack was so fascinating to watch I played it to checkmate. Here are the stats:

Millennium King Performance: 4 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 2 blunders, 36 ACL.
DGT Centaur: 1 inaccuracy, 1 mistake, 0 blunders, 14 ACL.

Centaur leads the match 1.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

The Millennium King Performance fought back and managed to draw in game 2. It helped to trade Queens early and simply as much as possible. Very clean game on each side. The stats were:

MKP: 1 inaccuracy, 1 mistake, 1 blunder, 13 ACL
Centaur: 2 inaccuracies, 1 mistake, 1 blunder, 14 ACL

DGT Centaur leads match 2.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

This game was very close and was looking to be a draw but the Centaur got its King activated earlier and was able to penetrate enough to guard the promotion pawn. The stats were:

MKP: 1 inaccuracy, 0 mistakes, 1 blunder, 34 ACL
Centaur: 1 inaccuracy, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders, 15 ACL

Thanks for posting the games Tracy. The last match appeared to be fairly evenly matched through the middle game, then the Centaur gradually improved it’s position. Looks like the MKP may have blundered with Kg2? That was the beginning of the end.

Resignation regards,

DGT Centaur leads match 3.5-0.5

The Centaur wins game four by an incredible coordination of its two knights, while the King Performance's two rooks seemed helpless to stop them. The stats were:

MKP: 9 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders, 37 ACL.
Centaur: 5 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders, 20 ACL.

Another strong performance by the DGT Centaur, showing excellent coordination between the three major pieces. The stats were:

DGT Centaur leads match 5.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

The Centaur is on a roll now, winning its fourth consecutive game to take a commanding 5.5-0.5 lead in the match. The King Performance made the mistake of letting Centaur get its Queen and Rook on its last rank, with bad results. The stats were:

MKP: 3 inaccuracies, 2 mistakes, 1 blunder, 31 ACL
Centaur: 2 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 0 blunders, 16 ACL.

DGT Centaur leads match 6.0-1.0

Post by TracySMiller »

The King Performance played its best game of the match to get a draw. It was able to match the play of the Centaur, and kept the game simple, staying away from the tactics and was rewarded with the draw. The stats were:

DGT Centaur: 1 inaccuracy, 1 mistake, 0 blunders, 7 ACL
MKP: 2 inaccuracies, 2 mistakes, 0 blunders, 9 ACL

DGT Centaur leads match 7.0-1.0

Post by TracySMiller »

The DGT Centaur played a masterpiece of a game, probably my favorite game of the match. It kept several pieces pinned, including a triple-attack that seemed to last half the game, rendering several of MKP's pieces totally useless, then gradually pushed a passed pawn and brought up its King for support. Bobby Fischer would've been proud. The stats were:

DGT Centaur: 3 inaccuracies, 1 mistake, 0 blunders, 29 ACL
MKP: 5 inaccuracies, 1 mistake, 0 blunders, 38 ACL

DGT Centaur leads match 8.0-1.0

Post by TracySMiller »

The DGT Centaur makes an amazing sacrifice, one that Morphy would be proud of, then doesn't play exactly and lets the King Performance equalize, then plays a better Q vs 2 Rs endgame to take the win and an 8.0-1.0 lead in the match. Here is the pivotal position. White has just played 22. Bb8, attacking Black's Rook. So Black has to move the Rook, right?

[fen]1Bb1r1k1/r2n1p2/5q1p/p1p3p1/2B1n3/3QPN2/P4PPP/1RR3K1 w - - 3 22[/fen]

The DGT Centaur has other plans, though, and continues with 22...g4?!, giving up the rook to attack the white knight and create complications.

Here are the stats:

MKP: 12 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 2 blunders, 48 ACL
DGT Centaur: 5 inaccuracies, 0 mistakes, 2 blunders, 34 ACL

DGT Centaur wins match 9.0-1.0

Post by TracySMiller »

The DGT Centaur wins the 10th game, and the match (9.0-1.0), the same way it won the first game, by tactically dominating. The Millennium King Performance played well for the first half of the game but took the bait when the Centaur offered up its Bishop in exchange for getting its Rook onto the 7th rank. Here's the position after 35...Bc6:

[fen]6k1/1q3rp1/2b4p/1pPp1p1P/2nB1P2/3B2P1/R4PK1/Q7 w - - 4 36[/fen]

White played 36. Bxf5?!, and Black decided to take the offered Bishop, and the Centaur brought its heavy artillery onto the 7th rank and proceeded to tactically dominate the rest of the game, forcing Black's King into the center with a beautiful coordination of its Queen, Rook, and Bishop. The stats for the game were:

DGT Centaur: 2 inaccuracies, 1 mistake, 0 blunders, 17 ACL
MKP: 5 inaccuracies, 3 mistakes, 0 blunders, 37 ACL.

I know ten games is not a lot, but, at least in my mind, I'm convinced the DGT Centaur (in Expert mode) is substantially stronger than the Millennium King Performance.

Here's the game: https://lichess.org/dbWxlOuP

The average ACL's for the match were:

DGT Centaur: 18.6
Millennium King Performance: 32.5

It's running a version of Stockfish. It's been modified, though. I don't think it's as strong as vanilla Stockfish. Maybe if I get some time I'll try to run a tournament of DGT versus the Stockfish engine, if I can figure out how to get the clock speeds similar.

Back in January Chessnut reported it was DGT modified version of Stockfish 9. It would be interesting to run Stockfish 9 on a Pi Zero (perhaps with Picochess) against the Centaur.

Hi all,

Yes when I got my Centaur I copied the micro sd card to my Raspberry Pi.
The Stockfish engine was written to the Centaur micro sd card on the 29/11/2018 but starting it on My Rapsberry Pi revealed this:

Al@PicoChess:~/Centaur-Engs $ ./stockfish_pi
Stockfish 310118 by T. Romstad, M. Costalba, J. Kiiski, G. Linscott

So it was Stockfish as of the 31 Jan 2018, 1 day before Stockfish 9 was released, so effectively it is Stockfish 9.

Cheers,

Al.
