ExPro-Mephisto Master Chess

Post by Four.nine »

Winter, cold...sitting around. I was done with ExPro. Was. But, I said, well maybe a quick match against some stiffer competition, maybe the 2163 rated Mephisto Master Chess. It was my intention to only do TWO posts for the match: First games 1 & 2 and last games 19 & 20 with a summary of the W-L-D...and only AFTER the match was completed. I just got done with the first game...and I am posting it: an upset and ExPro calculated a terrific game.
Immediately below was to be my forward to the first post:
**************************************************************
Mephisto Master- Explorer Pro Match. 2/13/18
1 minute/move

Decided to run a Mephisto Master-ExPro Max Strength match: 20 alternating games of reversed colors. Aktivschach has MMC rated at 2163 and ExPro at 2056 at present. This means that there likely will be a 13-7 result. My prediction is 11.5-8.5 for MMC: I believe, at 1 min/move that the ExPro is not only close to 2100, but exceeds that number. We’ll see. MMC will have the Power Saving bits set to zero (PS:0), so MMC “ponders” fully on opponents time (FULL STRENGTH). ExPro will be “Max Strength” i.e., Selective Search and Tournament book (via the “hidden options” method).
*************************************************************
So, Here is Game 1:

D30x: QGD: 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.Bg5 Be7 in book through White move 10. ExPro calculates a nice early middlegame, eventually winning a pawn at 49. Rxb3. Not bad, against a 100 ELO point stronger opponent. But, at move 66, another thing happened: ExPro morphs into StockFish. Move 66. Rd6+! and the NEXT THIRTEEN moves after that, were all SF recommendations. ExPro has a +14 eval lead and has just beaten the stronger Master Chess. At move 93, MMC displayed +9.9 and that was a resignation for me. Simply outstanding game by Explorer Pro.

If there is feedback that all games should be posted I will do that. If there is interest simply in the end result, I will go back to my original plan of 2 post summarization. If anyone would like to predict the result, that would be nice: My own 11.5-8.5 prediction above was made before I moved a single piece.

Hello Scandien,
I know of two others that do not have default access to "row 2": Chess Challenger and Centurion. However, I do not use hidden options in these units:
1. They already start in Selective Search
2. Tournament Book seemed to help very little
3. The Centurion seemed to have functional issues when in hidden options mode. From my Centurion “Quick Start” notes::
***********
Centurion Update: Hidden Options Details Removed 9/14/2016

Hidden Options are OUT. First, During the Euro Style 2016 Tournament, Centurion refused to accept board square move entries late in Game 40 (against GM29). Then, at the start of Game 41 (against TAT), Centurion refused to accept most keyboard “Game Keys” entries and needed an ACL. From Game 41 notes:
The most dramatic part of this game was that Centurion wouldn’t respond to control buttons at start up and required an “ACL”. This apparently is a remnant of the previous game: a “Hidden Options” game in which Centurion would not recognize move entries late in the game.

The above problems are absolutely a direct result of entering the “Hidden Options” zone! Centurion works flawlessly, otherwise.

Additionally, the Tournament Book “enable” did NOTHING. With TB enabled, Centurion barely won Game 40 (Euro Style 2016 Tournament) against the weaker Excalibur GrandMoron 29 (the Game was dead even at move 25 and Centurion only won, because GrandMoron LOST). Additionally, with TB enabled, Centurion draws game 41 and then LOSES Game 42 against the weaker GK2000 clone Turbo Advanced Trainer!

D30x: QGD: 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.Bg5 Be7 in book for 9 full moves (must be a mistake in SF app: both Black 9. .. c6 (Game 1) AND 9. .. c5 (Game 2) are titled D30x. Perhaps a curious student can clear up the incongruity.. I believe c5 is book). In any case, ExPro 10. .. bxc5? (Nxc5) allows MMC to spring an opening trap which wins the Black “d” pawn: 11.Nxd5 Nxd5 12.Bxh7+ Kxh7 13.Qxd5 Bxg5 14.Nxg5+. But, MMC 15. QxR is not as strong as 15. Nxf7! and ExPro has several immediate opportunities to equalize (17. f4? Qd5! and 18. Rfe1? Qh4!). Also, ExPro displayed equalizing move 20. .. Bh3! for a while, but eventually settled on weaker 20. .. Qe6? MMC now leads +1.6. The material eventually wound down to R+4P vs. B+N+2P and White’s four, connected Kingside pawns eventually ruled the day. At move 48, White has a dangerous h4 pawn and ExPro 48. .. Be6?? allows 49. h5! GAME OVER. MMC wins the reversed colors D30x: QGD; Tied 1-1.

Game 3 Poor Pawn play on the Q’side by ExPro. Then, MMC simply outcalculates ExPro; 0-1.

D02n: Queen’s Pawn: London in book for 7 moves. An even game until ExPro 11. a4?, 13. cxb4?, 14. Qe1? and 15. Qe2? Should have been game over, but ExPro gets a reprieve with MMC 22. .. NxB? Draw. But, ExPro backslides with 25. Rac1? (bxc4) and MMC is in the driver’s seat for good. ExPro can’t “see” far enough ahead and deems 27. RxB?? a good idea. NOT. GAME OVER, in fact. MMC then correctly calculates killers 30. .. Bf1+! and 31. .. Bh3! Bye-Bye, ExPro.

Game 4 Reversed colors Game 3. ExPro was OK for 21 moves. 10 moves later ExPro is dead.

D02n: Queen’s Pawn: London in book for 5 moves. MMC varies at 6. Bd3 (ExPro followed book in Game 3 with 6. c3). After MMC 20. Ngxf7, ExPro actually had a small lead for a couple of moves. But, 22. .. Ba8?, 23. .. Rb7?, 25. .. Qc6?, 27. .. Qc7?, 29. .. Nbd7? and 30. .. Rb8?? made quick work of that: GAME OVER, but for ExPro. MMC won’t let you get away, with those kind of moves. MMC wins both ends of the D02n Queen’s Pawn “doubleheader”.

ExPro Max Strength: “The dream is over, What can I say?” now 1-3 against the strong MMC.

D60: QGD: Orthodox in book for 9 full moves. ExPro calculates the unusual 10. Qxd4 (exd4). But, despite an early pawn loss (16. Rab1? (Bd3); also, follow-up 17. Rxb3? was not optimal (axb3)), ExPro was hanging in against the stronger MMC. MMC was not perfect, either: 36. .. Ke7 (f5!) and 42. .. Be7? (Rd4). Actually, by move 44, the position is a DRAW. But, now, the ExPro endgame can no longer hang with MMC: 44. Kd2? (Bf2!), 45. e5? (The non-intuitive Be1, says SF), and “SUDDEN DEATH”, 56. Kxd3?????????? Even I could have found 56. .. Rb3+ GAME OVER.

Mephisto Master puttin’ a hurtin’ on Explorer Pro Max Strength: 5-1.

Game 6 Reversed colors Game 5. A draw, but an outstanding computer chess game. Mephisto Master gets in serious trouble, but makes all the right moves, to weasel out of a loss.

(d6) and later 22. Ba4 (Nh4) followed by 23. Qc4? (Qf1). ExPro has a chance now with pretty much a -3.0 eval lead for 10 moves. But small inaccuracies by ExPro: 32. .. Qh5 (Qe6), 33. .. Red7 (Re5) and 36. .. Qf5 (Qg6+) let MMC off the hook. A very, very complex position that MMC handled just a little better to hold the draw. The game ended in a threepeat draw, although ExPro may have still had the slightest chance with bold

Game 9 ExPro has definite winning chances early, but just can’t find the “killer” move. MMC equalizes and then, steadily, virtually move by move, “outcalculates” ExPro.

C29o: Vienna Gambit : Nf3 Bg4 in book for 7 full moves. MMC calculates opportunities on the Queenside and goes for it with 10. ..Qa5, 15. .. Ba3 and 16. .. Ba6. But, ExPro “sees” something on the Kingside and correctly goes for it with 17. Qe1! Unfortunately, ExPro stops going for it with 18. Bh4? Both 18. Qh4! or Bxh6!! WIN!!! (18. .. Bxh6!! and if gxh6 then Qg3+, MATE in 10!). ExPro then misses 19. Nd2! (19. Nd2 and if Bxd3? cxd3 Nd7 Nb1 and now where does the Bishop go?). But, I digress: ExPro 19. Bxc4? let’s Black off the hook. But wait. ExPro STILL has 21. e6! (21. e6 Na6 exf7 Rxf7 Qe6 Rf8 Ne5). But, 21. Rf2? ends ALL of it. ALL of it: Black just equalized. It gets worse: after ExPro 33. dxc5? (Be1), Black now leads -2.8. Pick any move now, from move 33 to 52 as GAME OVER (Also: from move 21 to 38, MMC calculated the SF recommended move 13 times or 72%. Yup, that’ll do it). At move 55, Black had a N+5P vs N+3P slam dunk win. At move 65, K+4P vs K+P, I called it for MMC.

Game 10 8 Reversed color Game 9 and MMC has a win, then a draw, then a loss. ExPro can’t find the winning move (TWICE) however, so drawn.

C29o: Vienna Gambit : Nf3 Bg4 in book for 6 full moves. Different than Game 9 as MMC does not have 6. d3, but 6. Be2 in internal book. ExPro gets in trouble quickly with flaccid Queen foray 12. .. Qc5? (defensive g6) and MMC is up quickly +2 in eval. MMC misses some strong moves early (17. Qg4+ and 19. .. Bf2!), but no worries as ExPro 23. .. Rf7? hands MMC two pawns (try Rg8 next time). By move 38, MMC has a R+6P vs R+4P advantage and SF says +2.9 lead...good enough for a win. TWELVE moves later it is a R+2P on both sides DRAW; nice work by MMC. Had ExPro figured out 61. .. Rc4!! or second chance 62. .. Rc4!!, MMC would have lost.

Halftime score: MMC 7-3 (Match performance +147).

Full Time report: No more. MMC has proven to me, without a doubt, ExPro Max Strength is NO Mephisto Master. No need for 20 games. Explorer Pro is definitely in the GK2100 class and MMC, to put it in simple terms, is just “more gooder”. I believe the hierarchy of Morsch World Tabletops that I own, AT ONE MINUTE/MOVE, would look like this:

1. Atlanta
2. Mephisto Master
3. Explorer Pro
4. Cougar
5. RS2250XL
6. GK2100 = Challenger = Centurion

From bottom to top, there is a measurable improvement at each step. There may be some slight differences among the three bottom units that would take dozens, maybe hundreds of games to discern. Not by me. I would even group RS2250XL with the bottom three except for the fact that at “active” or 30 Sec/Move, the thing does seem to calculate an overachieving game of chess for a 10 MHz processor. Additionally, Mephisto Master/Milano Pro: clones? I do not own a Milano Pro, but I believe someone, somewhere (maybe Spacious) provided test data showing that the Mephisto Master is actually a later, improved version of the Milano Pro. They are not clones. And ExPro and Cougar... are not clones.
That’s it.
