The Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess wins the match 6.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

The Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess unit wraps up the match with a nice Bxh7 sacrifice to win 6.5-0.5 over the RS 1850. I was proud of the little unit for seeing the move. Oddly enough, refusing the sacrifice makes things even worse for the RS 1850. Here's the link to the game and analysis.

RS Mega 2050X takes a 1-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

On to the next match. I'm looking forward to these upcoming matches because the units will (supposedly) begin to be closer in strength, which should result in closer games. Now we have #5 Radio Shack Mega 2050X vs. #12 Radio Shack 1900L.

The first game saw the 1900L make a few mistakes in a complicated exchange to lose a pawn. The Mega 2050X proceeded to munch a bunch of pawns with its Bishop Pair vs the Knight Pair to take the first game of the match. Very clean game by the Mega 2050X, with no mistakes or blunders!

RS Mega 2050X takes a 2-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS1900L makes a few mistakes and outright blunders, the most severe of which is in the following position. Its Knight is pinned, but it can be saved with the simple Kd6, unpinning the Knight, but it gets pawn hungry, and its appetite causes it to lose the poor steed by giving White time to double its rooks on the C-file. The Mega 2050X now leads 2-0.

RS Mega 2050X takes a 3-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS Mega 2050X continues to impress, outcalculating the RS 1900L in a complex tactical game. Again, very clean play by the Mega 2050X, with one 1 mistake and no blunders.

RS Mega 2050X takes a 4-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

Again, I lost the PGN to this game, but it was a classic outcalculaton in a complex tactical game. The RS Mega 2050X leads 4-0.

RS Mega 2050X wins a miniature to take a 5-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS 1900L lets his Queen get trapped. Here's the final position:

[fen]r3r1k1/pb2qp2/3p1bp1/7p/5PQ1/8/PP1NB1PP/R3K2R w KQ - 0 21[/fen]

The Queen can't leave the d1-h5 diagonal without allowing checkmate on e2.

RS Mega 2050X takes a 6-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS 1900L makes a poor move and loses a Knight, although it gets two pawns for it. Still, the Mega 2050X makes him pay for his carelessness to take a 6-0 lead.

RS Mega 2050X wins the match 6.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS 1900L waits until the last game of the match to put points on the board, playing an accurate game to get a draw. The mighty RS Mega 2050X advances to the Quarter-Finals with a 6.5-0.5 win.

RS 2150L vs Excalibur Ivan; first game is a draw

Post by TracySMiller »

The first game of the match sees the RS 2150L with what seems to be a path to victory, being up a piece at one point, only to make some innacurate moves, and allows Excalibur's Ivan to escape with a draw.

Excalibur's Ivan takes a 1.5-0.5 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

Very frustating, as again the RS 2150L seemed to have the upper hand (up more than 6.0 pawns at one point, according to Stockfish 8), but fritters it away. Still, it could achieve a draw, but at this critical position, makes a huge blunder:

[fen]6k1/4Q2p/4p1p1/1p6/4PPK1/1q4P1/7P/8 b - - 8 42[/fen]

All Black has to do is play h6 to prevent the incursion of the enemy King. The move it plays loses the game.

Excalibur's Ivan takes a 2.5-0.5 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

One thing is for certain: the RS 2150L SUCKS at endgame play. Here it threw away an obviously drawn game by making an incorrect King move at this position:

[fen]8/8/8/4p3/4Pk2/3K4/8/8 w - - 13 70[/fen]

For those of you wondering, the correct move is Ke2.

Hi Tracy,

Nice tournament! It gives me ideas for my own tournament :-).
About affordable units: A Mephisto Exclusive board with a module like Mirage, MM I or MM II or even a Rebell 5.0 should not cost more then your nice Citrine.
Once you have the board, you can dream of more modules running in it :-).
Anyway I am jealous of you having both the Ivan and Igor...

Best regards, Paul

Excalibur Ivan takes a 3.5-0.5 lead

A wild tactical game in which Ivan creates a passed pawn and uses it to his advantage to take a 3.5-0.5 lead in the match.

Excalibur Ivan leads 3.5-1.5

Post by TracySMiller »

The Radio Shack 2150L becomes the first lower seed to win a game. This was a complex, uneven endgame in which the 2150L made fewer mistakes than Ivan. Excalibur Ivan still leads the match 3.5-1.5.

Excalibur Ivan leads match 4.5-1.5

Post by TracySMiller »

Ivan gets back into the groove with this maneuvering, GM-like game. RS 2150L makes a critical mistake in the following position. Its position still would have been difficult, but after the blunder it's all over but the mate.

[fen]8/2p1r3/1p1r2k1/pR4pp/P1BPPn2/2P2P2/3K4/6R1 b - - 1 50[/fen]

In this position the RS 2150L played the lousy 50...Nh3??. If instead, it had played 50...c5, it may have had some chances.
