[fen]2r2r2/1pqbp1bk/p2p2pp/n2B1p2/2P5/4BNP1/PPQ1PP1P/R2R2K1 w - - 0 22[/fen]

The game was about equal for 21 moves when Millennium Chess Genius makes the mistake that ends up losing the game. In the above position MCG played 22. Bd2? which was a blunder as it loses the Bishop on d5 for the gain of a pawn after the move 22. ... e6!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/6P1/p4p2/P4P2/8/6p1/5kbK w - - 0 75[/fen]

Well it took a while for AM68060 Sargon 3 to complete the win but it was a pretty looking one, checkmating the King with pawn on b2!

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2r3k1/1p2Rpp1/p1q3bp/3P1p2/7r/2P1R1N1/P2Q1PPP/6K1 w - - 0 23[/fen]

DB Kallisto 1.83 made a huge blunder playing 23. ... Qb6? in the above position as this move makes the pawn on e5 combined with doubled Rooks unstoppable. The game was equal at this point of the match but DB Kallisto 1.83 needed to play 23. ... Qd6! to stop the threat of a Re8+ becoming dangerous as it did after the blunder.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]7R/7Q/p4pk1/1p4pp/7P/2P5/P5P1/7K w - - 0 46[/fen]

Novag Sapphire II played a great game, it was a bit of an unexpected surprise against such a good program as DB Kallisto 1.83.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]7k/4R2p/1p2p3/p3P1p1/4p3/3bP1PN/PP1B2KP/3r4 w - - 0 34[/fen]

Overall this was a good game that was played by both programs. DB MChess 1.06 may have had a couple of small opportunities to get an advantage in this game. But they were not that easy to find. For example in the above position DB MChess 1.06 played 34. ... Rxd2 which only draws. A worthy try which gains a pawn and good future opportunties for Black's King pawn advances would have been 34. ... Bf1+ 35. Kf2 Bxh3 36. Bc3 Rf1+ 37. Ke2 Rh1 (wins pawn).

FINAL POSITION

[fen]5k2/3R4/1p2pN1p/p5p1/4p3/1P1bP1P1/r6P/6K1 w - - 0 53[/fen]

Game drawn through 3x repetition.

Round 9 Game 4:

DB YChess 1.09 - DB Rex 2.30

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/ss7eIkQ5

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]3Rnk1r/2Q1qppp/4b3/2p5/8/P7/1P3PPP/4R1K1 w - - 0 27[/fen]

DB Rex 2.30 was outplayed but DB YChess 1.09 misses opportunities. In the above position DB YChess 1.09 missed playing 27. Qb8! for a quick win after for example 27. ... g5 and 28. a4!, a5 etc..

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]6R1/3b1pp1/5k1p/PP1n4/8/7P/5PP1/6K1 w - - 0 42[/fen]

In this position DB YChess 1.09 missed playing 42. Rb8 or 42. b6 for a much easier win. DB YChess 1.09 played 42. a6 which is still ok but takes a lot longer to win in a Rook versus Knight end game.

CRITICAL POSITION 3

[fen]8/R7/8/5p2/5k2/7P/5nK1/8 w - - 0 59[/fen]

The game had reached a horrible and painful stage where DB YChess 1.09 knows it should win but has no clue how, moving the Rook endlessly up and down and side to side. I was starting to get frustrated with operating this game, when DB Rex 2.30 decides to help out DB YChess 1.09, as if DB Rex 2.30 has not done that several times already in this game. In the above position DB Rex 2.30 plays 59. ... Ke3? which loses straight away you would think after the move 60. Ra3+!

CRITICAL POSITION 3

[fen]8/8/8/5p2/7P/3k4/6K1/8 w - - 0 63[/fen]

Well after DB Rex 2.30's 59. ... Ke3? blunder, DB YChess 1.09 found all the right moves to reach the above position. DB YChess 1.09 shows something as +8 in its evaluation yet, instantly after DB Rex 2.30 had just taken the Rook with 62. ... Kxd3, DB YChess 1.09 plays 63. h5? and the game is a draw!!

DB YChess 1.09 completely missed playing 63. Kf3! first before advancing the pawn on h4.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/7P/8/8/7K/4k3/5p2/8 w - - 0 68[/fen]

Amazing blunders in this game!! :)

[fen]3r3k/p5bp/1pn2p2/2p1nN1q/Q3P3/1P2B1P1/P4PB1/2RrR1K1 w - - 0 30[/fen]

DB Sargon 5 seemed to be in a great position to win the game here. 30. f4! was the correct move to play as it threatens the loss of a Knight. DB Sargon 5 played 30. Qa6 and misses its chance.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]3r4/p2r2kp/1pn2p2/2p4q/4P1n1/1P2B1P1/P3QPB1/2R1R1K1 w - - 0 33[/fen]

After further weak play by DB Sargon 5 who is now in trouble makes a further mistake in this position by playing 33. Bf4? which makes the win a lot easier for DB Grandmaster Active.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]Nnb2rk1/pp3ppp/4pq2/3p4/1bP1nB2/2N5/PP2PPPP/R2QKB1R w KQ - 0 10[/fen]

DB Psion Chess 1.01 made a really bad mistake by playing 10. Qc1 in this position. DB Psion Chess 1.01 was out of book after 2 moves and followed a line that was good for Black regardless of this error, making it easy for DB Chessmaster 3000 who stayed in book for 7 moves. 10. Qc2 was the best move in this position. 10. Qc1 loses instantly because of the 10. ... d4! move.

FINAL POSITION

AM68060 CP2150 is a pawn up in this endgame but it is not easy to win it especially after 39. ... h4! DB Complete Chess System 1.17 played played 39. ... Qb2? in this position. AM68060 CP2150 played the ending very well.

This game was destined for a draw but in the above position DB Chess Friend had 1 shot for a win after a previous mistake by AM68060 CC2175. The correct move in this position is 58. ... Nc3! followed by advancing the pawn to f4! Too difficult perhaps for DB Chess Friend as 58. ... Kg3 was played which only draws.

Seeing you post about this tournament, I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask:

1) I see you include a couple of (to me) almost identical participants, such as Psion 2.00 and 2.01. What is your motivation for this? Is it just to get even number of participants, or are you genuinely expecting different performances from these?

2) A was fiddling a little bit around with the Whittington programs on Amiga during christmas, and to me there seemed to be cases of programs that were almost identical but just in different packaging. Specifically, Chess Simulator=Chess Player 2150 and Checkmate=Chess Champion 2175. What is your oponion of the differences between these programs?
[/code]
Thank you for an interesting game.

BenRedic wrote:Seeing you post about this tournament, I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask:

1) I see you include a couple of (to me) almost identical participants, such as Psion 2.00 and 2.01. What is your motivation for this? Is it just to get even number of participants, or are you genuinely expecting different performances from these?

2) A was fiddling a little bit around with the Whittington programs on Amiga during christmas, and to me there seemed to be cases of programs that were almost identical but just in different packaging. Specifically, Chess Simulator=Chess Player 2150 and Checkmate=Chess Champion 2175. What is your oponion of the differences between these programs?
[/code]
With Psion Chess, I was curious about seeing if there was a difference between versions 2.00 and 2.01 so I decided to just include them both. My impression is that Psion 2.00 is a little better than 2.01.

Same with Whittington. After having played these through both Division 4 and Division 3. Theydon't seem to be exactly the same. When I played them originally on the original Amiga 500 and 1200 they were a lot more similar, but playing them at higher speeds also shows differences between them.

If I were to rank them I would place them in this order.

1) Checkmate Aggressive setting is interesting.
2) CP2150 (strange but the oldest version remains the best version)
3) CC2175
=4) Checkmate Normal setting
=4) Complete Chess System
=4) Chess Simulator

With the last 3 I am not really sure yet which one is better, but they are definately different in how they play.

Also I included both Amiga 68060 and Atari 68060-32 MHz simply because it allows me to generally measure the strength improvement with a higher speed as I knew beforehand that Amiga plays very fast and therefore should come out better as it does.

I am spoiled with choices, so it is not limitations but curiosity that drives me and I hate leaving programs out. I already made that mistake with DB Mychess and Colossus X... thinking them to weak yet I allowed Max Rubin and some other bad DOS ones to play in Division 4, which I can't undo now :)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]3Q4/1p3ppp/3n4/p2k4/P5B1/1Pq3PP/5PK1/8 w - - 0 38[/fen]

AM68060 CP2150 made a mistake taking the pawn with 38. ... Qxb3? Holding the position and playing 38. ... h6 was better.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/q5p1/1k3p1p/3B4/8/Q5PP/5PK1/8 w - - 0 58[/fen]

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 - Millennium Chess Genius

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]5b2/1p3P1p/5Kp1/1P6/7P/8/3k2P1/8 w - - 0 46[/fen]

The chase is on. Millennium Chess Genius to move. Play 46. ... Kd3 or 46. ... Kc3 and go after the pawn on b5 and Black wins. Go after the pawn on b2 and your winning chances evaporate. Well Millennium Chess Genius made the wrong choice and went after the pawn on b2 with 46. ... Ke2?

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]5b2/1p1K1P1p/6p1/1P6/7P/8/5kP1/8 w - - 0 48[/fen]

A couple of moves later in this position you have to be a bean counter and count squares in order to decide what is the best move to play. If you count the squares deeply enough you will figure out that white Queens one move ahead of Black, yet Black retains the extra h-pawn. But the game would most likely be a draw because white's Queen will probably be able to check black's King repeatedly. But to do all this Millennium Chess Genius must play 48. ... b6! in the above position.

Now if you count it wrong and take the pawn with 48. ... Kxg2? you lose! As did Millenium Chess Genius...... because duh! White does not!! go after the Bishop with the move 49. Ke8? which is very bad. Instead White simple moves 49. Kc7! takes the pawn on b7 and wins, just like AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 in this game!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/6Qp/4K3/8/8/5k2/8/8 w - - 0 62[/fen]

Well this is a lesson on how to lose a won game! :)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r2q1rk1/pppn1ppp/4pn2/3pNb2/2PP4/5PP1/PP1NP1BP/R2QK2R w KQ - 0 10[/fen]

After 9 moves, Saitek Master Chess has a very slight positional advantage. But that was the last one. After the move 10. e4?! the advantage goes to AM68060 CC2175. Saitek Master Chess continues to make small mistakes and loses this game quickly.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]5rk1/p1p2ppp/1q3n2/2P5/3p2b1/1P2P1P1/P2P3P/RNQ1KR2 w Q - 0 19[/fen]

This one is a good critical position example. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 to move has a winning game if 19. ... Qc6! is now played because of the threat of 20. ... Qg2! But instead AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 plays 19. ... Qb5? threating 20. ... Qe2 checkmate. But of course that never happens because DB Sargon 5 plays 20. Qc4! and immediately the advantage goes to DB Sargon 5 who wins the game.

https://lichess.org/2pbh2wbi

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/5p2/8/1P2R3/1r6/4KP2/8/8 w - - 0 61[/fen]

DB Chess Friend missed a few opportunities to win this game. This above position is the last oppportunity. Ahead by a pawn with no easy way for black's King to assist the rook in stopping the pawn on b5 advance, DB Chess Friend should have played 61. Kd3! and move his King closer to the b4 pawn and assist its advance. DB Chess Friend however played 61. Re8+ which resulted in a draw.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/5p1n/6p1/r3Q3/4NK2/6PP/r4P2/8 w - - 0 43[/fen]

DB Turbo Chess started the game well and had most of the advantage up to this point. However by the time this drawish position is reached, AT68060-32 Sargon 3 two rooks have already started to look stronger than White's Queen as a result of DB Turbo Chess moving his King into the open field. DB Turbo Chess now plays 43. Qd4? which for the first time in this game gives AT68060-32 Sargon 3 the opportunity to win with the move 42. ... R2a4!

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2bq1r2/2ppbpkp/p1p2Np1/1r2Pn2/8/1PQ2N2/P1P2PPP/R1B2RK1 w - - 0 16[/fen]

DB Chessmaster 2000 demolished AM68060 Checkmate Normal in this game. DB Chessmaster 2000 is already ahead in this position where AM68060 Checkmate Normal has only one halfway decent move with 16. ... d6. I have no idea why AM68060 Checkmate Normal decided to play 16. ... Rh8? as this decided the game in just a few moves after plays 17. g4!

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/p1N2ppp/1pnr4/4p3/8/7P/P1r2PP1/R3BKR1 w - - 0 25[/fen]

DB Siberian 2.15 is ahead by a Bishop for two pawns and although a Rook is closed in on g1, DB Siberian 2.15 would keep a small advantage with 25. a4! or 25. Nb5.
But this is where DB Siberian 2.15 blunders and plays 25. Ne8? as this traps and loses the Knight after subsequent Black moves 25. ... Rd7! and 26. ... Kf8.

As expected AT68060-32 Chess Simulator had a few opportunities to win this game. But it was not meant to be. In the above position AT68060-32 Chess Simulator should have played 50. Ra7! which should have ensured a win. Instead AT68060-32 Chess Simulator missed it and played 50. Kd3 and missed its last good opportunity to win.
