Greetings Greg:

While I’m far from being fluent in French, I watched the free version of this film sans subtitles, and thoroughly enjoyed it just the same.

http://watch32.is/movie/oxQRO4Gn-queen-to-play.html

Despite the language barrier, I noticed that the happy couple playing chess early in the film were using a Philippine tournament set. Back in the late ‘70s, sometime after the first Karpov vs. Korchnoi championship match, I bought this very set from one of the NYC chess shops for its cool design and the 2 types of exotic hardwoods used in its construction, but because it was unweighted, it just sat in my drawer literally for decades. A few years ago I auctioned it off on eBay along with a plethora of excess chess paraphernalia, and since it was still in like-new condition, sold it for about triple what I paid for it.

Wow John - just watched the episode. Super creepy!
Yes, the whole “Ghost Story”/”Circle of Fear” series did indeed have a creepy vibe, and this vintage chess episode was no exception.
You can imagine what it was like watching this when I was off from school due to illness, at a time that I had only just learned the official rules.

Speaking of creepy chess themed media, this 1992 version of “Knight Moves” with Christopher Lambert is sure to give you nightmares:

On this subject, let me add the inspiration behind the nick I use on most chess sites. BenRedic is short for sheikh Ben Redic Fy Fazan, a fictional character from the classic norwegian movie Flåklypa Grand Prix from 1975. It was dubbed to a number of languages, and released worldwide as Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073000

The sheikh has a gorilla, which is employed as a bodyguard and a driver. In one scene he is also playing chess, and losing, against his gorilla. The scene can be found here: https://youtu.be/T_W3L-s3wIg?t=29m26s

My profile pic is myself, taken in Lebanon, wearing an outfit I bought in Syria.
Thank you for an interesting game.

This weekend I watched "I am Heath Ledger", a 2017 documentary about the actor. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6739646/

A couple of interesting things came up in this movie:

1) Heath was an avid chess player. In the documentary it is claimed that he was hoping to achieve GM status, and that he was only a few points away from this goal. However, I have been unable to find evidence supporting this. If anybody is able to dig up actual games, tournament results etc, feel free to chime in.

2) In addition to being an actor, he was an aspiring director. He had directed music videos, and was working on what would be his directorial debut with a chess themed motion picture: "Queen's Gambit", based on the 1983 novel by the same name.

Thank you for an interesting game.

Last night i watched "Crusing" (1980) starring Al Pacino. It is currently streaming on Netflix, at least here in Norway. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080569

About 15 minutes in, we see shots of a policeman playing against a Boris chess computer. He moves his bishop from f1 to g2 on the board, then incorrectly enters the moves f1 to f2 on the computer. When the computer responds with "illegal move", the cop replies "son of a b*tch!".

Also; Pieces en prise all over the board.
Thank you for an interesting game.

Look again, this time wearing your glasses. (The board is correctly oriented.)

Hi,

for Steve's rehabilitation: The probability was extremely high to find the black square in the lower right corner - or was it the other way round....? :P

Unlike Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek which featured an artistic multi-leveled chess variant, this classic Irwin Allen produced Sci-Fi series had “The Space Family Robinson” still playing traditional 2D chess, often times with the robot.

Professor John Robinson and Major Don West are in the middle of a game when they are informed of the robot’s absence. They depart the Jupiter II hurriedly, allowing Maureen and Judy to take over their respective places. Why waste a good game?

Lost in Space “War of the Robots” originally aired on Feb. 9th, 1966.

The classic Hollywood chess scene is this: the protagonist enter to a place where chess is being played by masters, he takes a look at a board and instantly discover and play a mate in one move that the GM did not see.

the blessed guy take all the ladies and all the mates regards
