Opening Book Tester

Post by Clive »

Hi all
For those of you interested I have been testing opening books as I am curious to know which books work best with PC Chess programs.
The books I am testing are:

Powerbook 2011
Strongbook 2011
Junior
Rybka (free version)
2017 Book (Included with Komodo and Houdini on Chessbase)
Fritz 12
Fritz 15
Hiarcs 12
Hiarcs 13J (June 2012 book)
Hiarcs 14w (August 2017 book)
Hiarcs 14x (October 2017 book)
Kasparov (A book created by me of all GKs games with players over 2700)

The way I am testing is that each book will play each other 12 times (792 games) using a version of the Chessmaster program at game in 5mins.
At the moment I am halfway through with some surprising leaders. Test will be finished in a couple of days.
Anyone care to guess what the top 3 will be?

And the results are:

Out of 132 games each.

1: 75.5 Hiarcs13J

2: 70.5 HiarcsW

3: 68.5 HiarcsX

4: 68.5 Fritz12

5: 67.5 Junior

6: 67 Hiarcs12

7: 66.5 Fritz15

8: 66.5 Rybka

9: 65 Book2017

10: 61 Strongbook2011

11: 59.5 Kasparov

12: 56 Powerbook2011

Fritz 12 book put in a good showing but the winner by 5 games is the older Hiarcs13J book.

Hi Clive,
interesting results. I'm quite surprised that HiarcsW scored better than HiarcsX. What Chessmaster personality did you used? What software did you used for testing?

Hi Hero

I used the 'Spassky' chess personality with Chessbase software.

I recently had a tournament of all 48 Chessmaster personalities at game in 5 all play all and Spassky won.
