Roma 32 32 Bit vs Dallas 32 Bit

Post by ricard60 »

In the forum http://www.miclangschach.de/forum/index.phpt has been made 2 tournaments:
http://www.miclangschach.de/index.php?n ... umOpen2012 http://www.miclangschach.de/index.php?n ... urnier2013) where Roma 32 Bit and Dallas 32 Bit has taken place, the first one was Mysticum Open 2012 and the second one was Walters und Steffens Mysticumturnier 2013.

In the first one Dallas finished ahead of Roma for 1 point, Dallas made 3/6 and Roma made 2/6
In the second tournament Roma finished ahead of Dallas by 1.5 points Roma made 6/16 and Dallas made 4.5/16

In the last rating list from schachcomputer.info Dallas is still above Roma
73 Mephisto Dallas 68020 F 2094 59 59 103 52.4 % 2077 23.3 % -12
81 Mephisto Roma 68020 R 2076 41 41 234 51.3 % 2067 17.9 % -1

But this can change, Dallas Elo is not so stable yet only 103 games and Roma 234 games.
Since i got the 2 Mysticum running i decided to face this two machines in a 6 game tournament the first 3 game at fast time controls 3 sec/move the first game, 5 sec/move the second game and 10 sec/move the third game.

The first game was won by Roma the second was a draw and the third one was won by Dallas. So tournament is tie for the moment. The 3 games left are going to be made at longer time controls, 20 sec/ move and the 5th and 6th games at 1 min/move. Each time the thinking move was longer (3sec,5sec,10sec) it seems that Dallas was more capable. What do you think will happen at longer time controls?. In this tournament Roma and Dallas are not overclocked as in the first 2 tournaments they are playing as the real machine speed 14 MHz.

Who could win? regards

I think it's been widely acknowledged that Lang was already finding it hard to improve his programs even in the late 80s, so close results in small statistically meaningful samples are not that surprising. Even if I take his current Windows Phone Genius and effectively slow it down to similar computational speeds that his late 80s Mephistos managed at classical tournament time controls, the strength is still quite close - maybe 30 to 50 points at best stronger than a Portorose.

I also recall reading (I may recall incorrectly), but the original Dallas to Roma evolution was considered to be an extremely small one.

It's all the more interesting that programmers like Morsch managed to make continued improvements right through his career- on the same hardware equivalents he probably squeezed a class and a half worth of improvements.
Chess is like painting the Mona Lisa whilst walking through a minefield.

Probably yes, let´s see what happens.

In the second game came up this position

[fen]R7/4k3/8/6pp/5p2/6b1/4K3/8 w - - 0 1[/fen]

and after 65. Rh8 g4 66.Rxh5 went into a draw position.

Maybe a close match regards

Fourth game at 20 sec/move was a queen opening and ended in a draw. In the end neither Roma or Dallas let the other king go through.

The 5th game at 1 mi/mov has taken place. Was a queen opening and black went for a slav defence used in a lot of books in dedicated chess machines.

Also was a very balanced game but in the ending and after move 62 came up this position:
[fen]8/3b4/1p5p/pBk5/P1P3pP/1K4P1/8/8 w - - 0 1 [/fen]

and after 62.. Bxb5 63.cxb5 h5 64.Kd3 Kb4 Roma is lost. Both machines at this point were looking 10 moves in brute force and 19 in selective search.
Dallas is up by 3-2 and one game to go.

Dallas and Roma regards

This is the right fen after move 62.Bb5. After some minutes of posting the forum does not let me edit the last post anymore.

In the sixth game and after 105 moves on the board came up this position

[fen]2N5/8/1p2knK1/2p5/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 1[/fen]

It looks like black (Roma) will win but white played 106.Nxb6, this move leads to a draw. As of course Dallas or Roma do not have EGTB i let them played up to move 150 and they got stuck in a position where black could not make progress with its pawn.

The match ended 3.5-2.5 for Dallas
