Back to the 80's

Hi all,

Play chess again against the MMIV and MMV on your PC.

http://www.top-5000.nl

Thanks goes to Thorsten for pointing out the emulator software to me and to Saitek for their courtesy to abstain the copyright of the 2 programs.

Regards,

Ed

Hi Ed,
This is excellent but does it have the same strength as if i was playing the real dedicated chess machine and not stronger because of the pc cpu.

That's, what i would expect from an emulator: giving exact the identical performance of the original.

Means:
If you let the emulator run with 100%, that means 100% original speed.

Of course, you can speed it up, if you want: 200% mean twice the original speed and so on...

There could be one reason, that the emulator would be faster: the original was running with some wait-states. This could be the case for the Amsterdam (68000): the emulated A. is about 20% faster than the original; on the other hand, for the Dallas 68000, the speed is correct.

I did not test it for the MM IV/V yet, but for the Amsterdam, the emulated version seems to need some adjustment!

Robert,

I test it but it seems that is in a level of fast moves.

How can i change the level of play of the MMV or MMIV through the keybord in this emulator?

It's there, but the URL in the link is messed up.

Try http://www.top-5000.nl/dl/dedicated.zip

Press F5 then type the level number, by head:

1 - 5 secs
2 - 10 secs
3 - 30 secs
4 - 1 min
5 - 2 min
6 - 3 min
7 - 6 min
8 - forgot about it
9 - infinite

Other useful info:

Options -> Keyboard -> Customize Emulated Keyboard shows possibilities.

Options -> Maximum Speed

Options -> Soft Reset for new game

While calculating: press INFO (F4) shows best move, then "a" shows score, "b" shows time, "c" shows depth.

To see full mainline: INFO -> "0" -> "0" etc.

Good luck,

Ed

My Norton Antivirus warns that "dedicated.zip" is infected. I cancelled the download.

Hi,

you can find the actual mess binaries for windows which include also the chess computer drivers on www.mess.org.
The sources of mess are available, too. So everyone can build binaries
for different platforms. i.e Linux, Mac OSX.
The glasgow roms could be downloaded via the link in this thread.

I test this emulator with a 10 game match with palm hiarcs set at 2000 elo
i set the emultor to 100% speed.

Final score: mm5 (emulator) 9 palm hiarcs (2000 elo) 1.

So it seems that this emulator is stronger than the real dedicated mm5.

I will test the emulator at 50% speed.

hiarcs was runnuing on a zire 72.

I test the emulator with citrine now. I am playing a 10 game match and the score is after 5 games: (30 min each game)

citrine 3.5 mm5 1.5

i will take the rating for citrine from de schachcomputer active elo list that is 2129 an for mm5 1988.

For the moment the score shows that the emulator plays as the real dedicated machine.

Ricardo.
P.S sorry the match with palm was wrong on settings in palm hiarcs.

I finish this match with a final score of:

citrine 6.5 mm5 3.5

so i think the emulator is fine. I will test mm4 facing it against the fidelity designer 2100 also in a 10 game.

Since i don't have enough money to have a collection as Steve has maybe i can chase him in a chep way by having emulators.

best emulators regards
Ricardo
