Stockfish Picochess (MK802II) vs iOS Shredder (iPhone 5s)

Post by fourthirty »

Since Stockfish Picochess so easily destroyed the Mephisto Master in the previous game, I elected to put him through his paces against a more suitable adversary.

The iOS version of Shredder claims to have an Elo rating of 2600. The PicoChess wiki states Level 20 estimates about 2570 Elo.

Unfortunately, iOS Shredder does not have an "time per move" game option (only timed games), which proved too difficult to execute using PicoChess & a DGT board. Even at Maximum Strength (2600 Elo), Shredder calculated all moves very quickly, so I elected to set Stockfish at Level E6 (15 seconds per move).

A quick glance at the relative strength of the ARM mobile processors reveals that the iPhone 5s A7 processor is approximately four (4) times faster than the AllWinner A10 used in the Rikomagic MK802 II:

From the ARM core wiki page:

MK802II = Cortex-A8 core / ARMv7-A architecture / 2.0 DMIPS/MHz
iPhone 5s = Cortex-A57 / ARMv8-A architecture / 4.1 DMIPS/MHz per Core

It would appear that Shredder would have the advantage of additional processing power behind it, but resigned the game after move 72.

Even when Shredder calculated it was at a significant disadvantage (from the swing-o-meter), it still performed the analysis quickly while playing at maximum strength (less than 5 seconds per move).

As a result, I played a second game. This game I reduced the PicoChess Time Control to C6 (5 seconds per move). I also upgraded the software to v0.18, which incorporates the Stockfish DD version of the engine.

Not counting this as a true round 2 as so many variables have changed, and not rotating sides.

However, Shredder lost again, resigning after move 51.

Reduced Stockfish's time controls to Level B6 (3 seconds per move). This game resulted in a draw, which was offered by Shredder after move 29 (declined) & subsequently Stockfish (accepted).

Last game in the series. This round I reduced Stockfish's time controls to the minimum at Level A6 (1 second per move) & switched it back to white.

Stockfish was able to beat Shredder iOS playing at full strength! Shredder resigned after move 71 (White to win in 5 moves).
