Hi Erdo,

Thank you very much for the challenge. I am a dedicated computer guy so this is really the first time that I have tried it with fast computers. I have to say that I think we all really enjoyed it.

We accept your offer for a draw. I think we came to the same conclusions. Here is some of the analysis that we looked at today:

After 41. d5 Be5, 42. Rc6! might be a faster draw than 42. Qg5+ even though Qg5+ evaluates higher and should also draw.

41. d5 Be5 42. Rc6 Rh1+ 43. Ka2 Qxd5+ 44. Qxd5 exd5 45. Bf3 *

[fen]8/4k3/p1R5/3pbp2/8/5B2/KP6/7r w - - 0 6[/fen]

I show this position as only +0.98 for Black

The better Black evaluation is:

41. d5 Be5 42. Rc6 Qxd5 43. Qxd5 exd5 44. Bxa6 *

[fen]7r/4k3/B1R5/3pbp2/8/8/1P6/1K6 w - - 0 5[/fen]

These are the only two Black choices.

Also interesting was:

[fen]7r/4k3/p1R5/3pbp2/8/5B2/1P6/1K6 w - - 0 5[/fen]

41. d5 Be5 42. Rc6 Qxd5 43. Qxd5 exd5 44. Bf3

We think that Qg5+ after Be5 was interesting as well, but would have taken longer than Rc6:

42.Qg5+ Bf6 43.Qe3 Qxd5 44.Rc7+ Kd8 45. Qb6 Rh1+ 46 Kc2 Ke8 47. 47. Qxa6 Be7 48. Qa7!

[fen]4k3/Q1R1b3/4p3/3q1p2/8/8/1PK1B3/7r w - - 0 9[/fen]

The above seems to be the best evaluation for white that I found.

This followed with:

48. ... Qe4+ 49. Kb3 Kf8 50. Bc4 Rh3+ 51. Ka4 Rd3 52. b4 f4
53. Qa6 Rd6 54. Qc8+ Bd8 55. Kb5 f3 56. Rc6 Qf5+ 57. Ka4 Rd1 58. Rc5 Qe4 59.
Qxe6 Ra1+ 60. Kb3 Rb1+ 61. Kc3 Qxe6 62. Bxe6

[fen]3b1k2/8/4B3/2R5/1P6/2K2p2/8/1r6 w - - 0 23[/fen]

Qg5+ would have been exciting though.

Best regards
Nick

Hello friends from the Hiarcs forum! ! !

It was an exciting game, where I had hoped for something more from my first good position. The deeper I looked, the more was aware that it is almost impossible to win! I'm sure the Dragon with the idea 7 .. h5! revive is still ;-) Thank you to all who participated in this experiment.

See you Guys on my next Chalange ;-)

I sent this game to GM Chris Ward a Dragon expert who has written books on The Dragon and also writes on The Dragon for http://www.chesspublishing.com/

The annotations below belong to Chesspublishing.com so please do not post them elsewhere.

[Event "Internet"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2014.09.13"]
[Round "?"]
[White "Hiarcs Forum"]
[Black "Erdo"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[Annotator "Chris Ward"]
[ECO "B75"]
[Source "ChessPublishing.com"]
[SourceDate "2014.09.16"]

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 h5 { In a
previous annotation here on ChessPublishing I wrote about this move that 'For
now just a Dragon where Black has opted for this rare move. In itself it
inhibits White's g2-g4 advance whilst preventing a future White Bh6 at least
until such a time as Black has castled.' Subscribers will note that I
received a question in the September 2014 update essentially asking me what I
think of this idea of h5 and not castling till late. I think the first key
point to address with regards this question is that yes, it is all very well
Black delaying castles, but what sort of moves is he intending to follow up
with. He could for example still continue with the likes of ...Nc6 and ...Bd7
which would just make it a standard Dragon of the more offbeat 'delayed
castles' variety. If though the intention is to carry out more of an ...a6, ...
b5, ...Nbd7 ...Bb7 then it returns things to the realms of a Dragadorf but of
the early ...h5 variety that we have actually spent a bit of time
investigating recently. Taking into consideration the moves that follow
though and I consider the opening a 'Dragadorf'. } 8.h4 $6 { I thank Harvey for
sending me in his friend's game and it is indeed a very interesting one.
However all the same I would have to say that I really don't like this move
for White at all. Generally of course in the Dragon it is usually h2-h4 that
provokes ...h7-h5 rather than the other way around and given that Black had
already committed his h-pawn, I am having difficulty in understanding the
logic behind White's response. As it seems clear that Black has no intention
of castling kingside in the near future (a policy that would justify White's
selection with a g2-g4, ...h5xg4, h4-h5 idea), now any kingside initiative has
surely got to come through g2-g4 or f3-f4-f5 and in those instances the
likelihood is that h2-h3 is going to be a lot more useful than h2-h4. Also if
Black is going to keep his king in the middle then breaking in the centre is
thematic and although achieving e4-e5 isn't necessarily easy for White, there
is a frustrating way for him to play. Yes, to return to the question, Black's
early ...h5 idea quite appealed to me until that (site annotated) Navara, D
(2706)-Kislinsky, A (2483) Ostrava CZE 2014 game appeared. In that you may
recall that White played simply with } ( 8.Qd2 a6 9.Be2 Nbd7 10.a4 b6 { and
then } 11.Nd5 Bb7 12.c4 { securing an edge in a Maroczy Bind type scenario. To
cut to the chase, I think now that the onus is on Black to come up with
something somewhere there that avoids the slow death that Black ultimately
experienced in that encounter. } ) 8...a6 9.Qd2 Nbd7 10.Be2 Qc7 11.O-O-O b5 12.Kb1 Bb7 { There is no doubt then that Black has indeed played very much in
Dragadorf mode and I am still questioning the wisdom of White's h2-h4 move. } 13.a3 Rb8 { Given that White has now moved a pawn around his king, this seems
sensible, with the ultimate aim being the ...b4 that would activate this rook
along the b-file. That said } ( 13...Nb6 { is an obvious alternative and would
fit particularly well with a ...Nf6-d7-e5-c4 manoeuvre. } ) 14.g4 { Stuck for a
plan White goes for this thrust anyway but it is nowhere near as effective
with the black king in the centre and a rook on h8. } 14...hxg4 15.fxg4 { Yes, for
me the upshot of all of this is that White has given himself an isolated
e-pawn which Black could probably have taken immediately had he so desired. } 15...Nb6 { Again logical as Black looks to activate his rook through ...Nc4 and
isn't troubled by the concept of e4-e5. However regards } ( 15...Nxe4 16.Nxe4 Bxe4 { , possibly rejected this because of possible repercussions in the centre
but nothing obvious suggests itself whilst Black also has some pressure on c2
now. One possibility then is } 17.Bf3 ( { or } 17.Rhf1 Rxh4 ) 17...Nc5 { and if } 18.h5 $6 { then } 18...b4 $1 19.axb4 Bxf3 20.Nxf3 Ne4 21.Qd3 Rxb4 { suddenly looks
massive. } ) 16.h5 Nxe4 17.Nxe4 Bxe4 18.Rhe1 { In contrast to the previous
notes, this is possible now because there is no longer a pawn hanging on h4. } 18...gxh5 ( { Black's position is still to be preferred but I quite like the immediate } 18...Nc4 $5 { when actually } 19.Bxc4 $2 ( { Hence maybe } 19.Qc3 { but still } 19...Rc8 { builds pressure more though on the c-file now. } ) 19...bxc4 { is suddenly
catastrophic for White who is faced with the threat of ..c4-c3 and can't play } 20.Qc3 { because of } 20...Rb3 { taking advantage of a couple of pins. } ) 19.Bf2 { Not
panicking re recapturing (after all White is keen to open up more lines in his
quest to get at the black king), instead White retreats his bishop, giving his
queen more options should ...Nc4 appear. } 19...d5 { Solidly securing the bishop in
the centre of the board. } 20.Nf5 Be5 ( { Keeping the bishop pair for now seems
best. Instead } 20...Bxf5 21.gxf5 Nc4 22.Bxc4 bxc4 23.c3 { is a bit murky
because of the pressure that has been built up in the centre and the lack of
options available to the black king. } ( { Note not } 23.Bd4 $2 c3 $1 ) 23...Bf6 ) 21.Bxb6 { White though would definitely rather ...Nc4 doesn't figure. } 21...Rxb6 22.Bd3 Bxf5 { The white knight was well placed and hence that was the minor piece
that Black opted to concede his bishop for. Now though we enter an opposite
coloured-bishop scenario of which to generalise we know are drawish in
endgames but when there is life, favour the attacker. } 23.Bxf5 e6 24.Qe3 Bg7 ( 24...exf5 25.Qxe5+ Qxe5 26.Rxe5+ Kf8 27.gxh5 Rxh5 28.Rdxd5 { should be a
draw. } ) 25.Rxd5 { It's a bit annoying that this pawn drops although the fork
could come into play. } 25...b4 { In truth as the game goes, although Black always
seems top dog, it isn't clear whether he should have converted that advantage
to a full point. A slightly riskier alternative to the text would have been } ( 25...O-O $5 { White needs to get out of the fork with } 26.Rc5 { when } 26...Qd8 27.Bd3 hxg4 { leaves Black two pawns up but very much reliant on the idiom that
you won't get mated if you have the Dragon bishop and your opponent is
lacking the dark-squared opposer! } ) 26.Rc5 Qd6 27.axb4 O-O 28.Bd3 Rxb4 { Black is only one pawn up here but of course has that play against b2. } 29.c3 Rxg4 30.Rxh5 Rb8 31.Rh3 Kf8 ( { A safer square for the king although if Black
felt he could leave it on g8 for a bit, certainly } 31...a5 $5 { with a blatant
plan of ...a4-a3 was a consideration. } ) 32.Be2 ( { Regards my last comment of
course putting the king on a dark square meant that ...Bxc3 was a threat
because there would be no Bh7+. Ironically here perhaps the best way to meet
31...Kf8 was through } 32.Kc1 ) 32...Qa3 33.Qd2 { A pawn up including for now,
two connected passed pawns and pressure against b2. Sounds promising, but
still I don't know if Black is winning as White can defend his second rank and
it is certainly not easy to make much of that pawn majority with so many pawns
on the board. } 33...Rd4 $1 34.cxd4 Qxh3 { Now White's pawns are split and ...
Qf5+-d5 looks like an attractive manoeuvre but still I'm not sure as Black
