Amir arrived yesterday evening quite late so we went in search of food. We ended up in China Town. We had to point at pretty pictures and they brought us food that looked a bit like the pictures. These came with with warm beer so we asked for an ice bucket. We probably needed Hans with us to mime like in China.
This morning we managed to get on the right train and 11 stops later we arrived at the venue! There was no internet when we arrived but people were working hard to set it up:
A couple of strange moments a4 from Pandix v Merlin and junior played the French defence, by accident, v Shredder and won. Mark Watkins was also there today. There is an English Pub right outside but I never saw an English pub before where everyone eats with Chopsticks.
After we finished 8 of us went to a Japanese Restaurant. We had to order before sitting down and again pointed at pictures. The food was pretty good and the beer cold.
Thanks, but could you include the games or at least the standings of the other participants? Sadly, the live PGN only includes the last round played, so I can't see the results of the first round played of the day. If you post the PGN on the TalkChess forum you can make use of their [pgn] tags.
Is HIARCS leading the Software section with 2.5/3 points? Quite a contrast from the Championship section with 0.5/3 points! What kind of hardware are the other people using?
As always, I am really impressed with Junior's style! Not many engines could beat Shredder in 31 moves, or defeat Hiarcs with a speculative piece sacrifice! I wonder if Junior's evaluation ignores standard material count and relies purely on second-order effects?

yes leading the software tournament on = hardware. We lost to Jonny on 2400 cores!! So no shame there. i suggest everybody plays through the Hiarcs Junior game it is Junior at its best. Hiarcs had what looked like a winning position until junior sacrificed a Bishop on move 25. This levelled things up in a way that only Junior can. Then Hiarcs managed to lose it. Junior is on 24 cores. Hiarcs 16 & Shredder 16.
I always prefer the = hardware tournament.
I think all the games are on the ICGA website will try and find them all tomorrow.

Actually the Bishop Sacrifice on move 25 is nothing special .A lot of programs do play it .For example Droidfish (Stockfish 3) on my 1.2 Gig Dual Core tablet finds it in less than a minute!! .Speaking of Stockfish , according to it , it was move 45 which was the decisive mistake of the game that is 45 .Rg2?? Hiarcs should have played 45.Rd3!! for a draw .I do not think that it is the 2400 Cores that is the reason for the loss as Pandix also faced jonny on the same number of cores and avoided a loss ,and as you will see a lot of other programs will not lose to it also....If I wanted to theorize what the main source of program improvements in the last 10 years or so have been I would say that it is 80 percent software and only 20 percent Hardware.......By the way the icga website lists Jonny running on 24 cores for some reason................

This is a very strange comment. The World Championship has never been about finding the 'best' program. One game between 2 top engines and anything can happen. All top programs will win lose and draw against Jonny. All i said was that there is no shame in losing 1 game v jonny. The first time it has ever defeated Hiarcs in the WC. Or any tournament as far as i remember apart from blitz on time. But the blitz is a lottery and a large part is down to operator skill. The Jonny programmer is a 2300+ player who bangs the clocks on a regular basis.

No, the ICGA has not kept the games online since since 2010! Perhaps you could have a word with them about it while you've got their ear. Basically, you are the only voice of this tournament. The ICGA has been doing nothing to distribute results in any of their events
Thanks for your reporting, and good luck in the rest of the tournament!

The new ICGA page. They have live games and reports as already in 2011. Thanks to Jan Krabbenbos DGT.

Thank you for the links! Sadly, the ICGA site still doesn't have the games for the 2011 events, though it at least has crosstables. Does this mean that the old database at http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/icga/ will no longer be maintained? It has been my go-to resource for all the older tournaments going back to the very first WCCC and Computer Olympiads, especially since it incorporates Javascript Chess and Go viewers.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank you for the Chess Programming Wiki. It has become an amazing and thorough resource for both programming techniques and computer chess history. And now I know you keep it very up-to-date with the current tournaments! Well done!

Is 2400 cores a cluster version or some sort of dedicated job?
Also, didn't you used to have an O/C 12 core?
I have an O/C 12 core and recently a 16 core E5-2687W and the 12 core is definitely faster by quite a bit due to search overheads.
In fact....I think it may equal the 24 core machine Junior is running on since their clock speed is only 2.7 GHz, maybe 3GHz with turbo.
Unless they have an unlocked sample...

Jonny runs on a University cluster in Germany. Sadly the 12 core I used to have is no longer with us. Amir is actually running the machine with ht on so 48 threads.
