In preparation for Sundays showdown between Hiarcs Olympiad 1990 and the Fidelity Mach II LA i decided to have a game against the Saitek President fresh from its win against the Novag Citrine
The Mach II was first released in 1987(later referred to as the Mach IIa) sporting a rating of 1884(SS) but then underwent no less then three revisions culminating with the LA version (named after the American Open tournament in Los Angeles in 1988 in which it competed) .
The final LA version was rated about 100 Elo stronger then the Mach IIa bringing its final rating to about 1980 Elo
In the Game the MII typically searched 5-6 ply and about 2000 NPS
it will be remembered that the President typically searches 7 ply and about 3300 NPS
the Pres. had the black pieces and was out of book first at move 6
[White "Fidelity Mach II LA"]
[Black "Saitek President"]
[Time Control "Game/ 30min..]
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 c5 5.Bd3 O-O 6.Ne2 cxd4 7.exd4 d5 8.cxd5
Nxd5 9.O-O Nc6 10.Qc2 Nf6 11.Bg5 Be7 12.Bxf6 Bxf6 13.Bxh7+ Kh8 14.Rfd1
g6 15.d5 exd5 16.Bxg6 fxg6 17.Qxg6 d4
a double edged position with the Mach II down a piece for 2 pawns
the Pres sees itself up here at +1.1 while the Mach II shows -.35
18.Ne4 Be5 19.Ng5 Qe7 20.Qh5+ Kg8
the Mach II sets in for a long think here taking nearly 3 minutes
the black King has been stripped entirely of its pawn cover and clearly some sort of game winning ,Marshall like sacrifice is in order
instead the Mach decides to play it safe regaining its pawn with the disappointing ..21.Nf3
21.. d3 22.Qg6+ Bg7 23.Qxd3 Bg4 24.Qc4+ Be6 25.Qc2 Rac8 26.Nc3 Bg4
27.Re1 Qc5 28.Qb3+ Kh8 29.Ne4 Qb4 30.Nh4 Bh5 31.Qxb4 Nxb4 32.g4 Bf7
33.Nd6 Rc2 34.Re7 Kg8 35.Rxb7 a5 36.Rxf7 Rxf7 37.Nxf7 Kxf7 38.Rd1 Bxb2
39.a4 Rc4 40.h3 Nc6 41.Rd7+ Ke6 42.Rd2 Ba3 43.Re2+ Kd5 44.Rd2+ Kc5
45.Nf3 Rxa4 46.g5
both computers have about 7 minutes left on their game clocks and the moves start to come fast and furious
the Mach is down again a piece for two pawns but in compensation it has three passed pawns and decides to run the g5 pawn here
the Pres also has a one remaining passed pawn and so the question to be decided(and with it the game) is ..
who's pawn will Queen first?
46.Bb4 47.Rd1 Ra2 48.h4 Kb5 49.h5 Bc5 50.Rd2 Rxd2 51.Nxd2
Bd4 52.h6 Ne7 53.Kg2 a4 54.Nf3 Bh8 55.Nd2 a3 56.Nb3 a2 57.Kg3 Ka4
58.Nc5+ Kb4 59.Ne4
Answer..the President's does with .59a1=Q
game over.. dude
60.Kg4 Qg1+ 61.Kf4 Qg2 62.Ng3 Qxf2+ 63.Kg4 Be5 64.Nh1 Qe2+ 65.Kh4 Ng6+ 66.Kh3 Qf3+ 67.Ng3 Qxg3# 0-1
FINAL POSITION
not a game to bring me any high degree of confidence for tomorrow's match
so just in case things start off badly tomorrow for the Mach II
I will have this standing by.....which the Mach II is not above asking for a little "help".. from time to time
President Lincoln Sends His Regards

HI Paul
glad you enjoyed the games
the next match up looks like the Fidelity Mach IV against Hiarcs 1.0 running on a 386
i have a strong feeling that my computers have seen the last of their winning ways

There's still the R30 and R40 to fall back on yet!
I just hope Mark and Harvey can find suitable hardware to keep the challenge alive until we hit Tasc levels................I have a P200mmx/96MB with Windows 98SE waiting in the wings should it be required
I also wish that these matches drew more of an attendance, I really don't understand why there's just a handful of die hards. The chess is at a level that most of us can easily understand and comment upon and for those runnng engines to analyse alongside we can see even deeper ideas that the programs in question miss! It's quite educational to my mind?!
Maybe it's just me regards

hi Paul
actually i already know the highest Hiarcs(pun intended) that my computers can compete with
the very first match i played against Team Hiarcs was against H 3.0
I operated the Resurrection-Fruit WCCC 05(2520 Elo) and the match was drawn at 1.5-1.5
as this is currently the strongest dedicated computer ever released for sale i could not possibly compete against a higher Hiarcs version then 3.0 at this time
however...due out in the Fall(Sept.-Oct. 07) is the Resurrection II running on even stronger hardware then the Res I so perhaps i might then be able to take on an even higher Hiarcs
Ever Onward Regards

Hi Steve,
Congrats to you and the Mach II LA! Nice to see in the first game, how the Mach increased the pressure on the white position!
Btw.: could you make a better picture of the R40 operator module? The reflection of the flashlight is just over the very important "40 MHz" display!
best regards,
Robert |

hey, as one of the few R40 owners, you have a liability against us humble rank-and-filers, to supply us with good pictures, that make us sit in front of the monitor and whimper: "I want it, i want it!..."
