Palm Hiarcs
One feature I would like to see is the ability to import a number of pgn games. I like to add games from Chess books. It makes it easier to follow and try different variations.
But, otherwise, I have been very happy with Hiarcs on my E2 Palm!

PGN for Palm Hiarcs
You can do this with 3rd party software. I wrote one package that runs on the desktop side (any O/S that supports Perl); and Pascal Georges wrote a package that runs on the Palm side. Both packages have their advantages and disadvantages, but both work.
Desktop side package http://www.bobnewell.net/hed.zip
Palm-side package http://prolinux.free.fr/hiarcs/
These are not official packages and not supported by the Hiarcs site but they work just fine.

Re: PGN for Palm Hiarcs
I tried Hiarcs manager for palm, but there is no way for me to get this program to "see" my native pgn files i have on the card; even if i copy the .pgn files over to RAM using a file manager, and push "import", I still don't see the pgn files, even though I have verified that the pgn files have copied over to RAM, what am I doing wrong?chipschap wrote:You can do this with 3rd party software. Re: PGN for Palm Hiarcs
I am not the author of Hiarcs manager for Palm (I wrote HED) but here's a try at an answer. Did you first do the "convert" step? You have to convert PGN to HMGR format prior to import.ljj8503 wrote: I tried Hiarcs manager for palm, but there is no way for me to get this program to "see" my native pgn files i have on the card; even if i copy the .pgn files over to RAM using a file manager, and push "import", I still don't see the pgn files, even though I have verified that the pgn files have copied over to RAM, what am I doing wrong?
That's just it--Hiarcs Manager can't "see" the pgn files in order to convert them--so I guess the pgn files would have to be convertedon a pc first before import to RAM/card. It's really a pain not having native pgn support with any palm chess software, many ppc chess apps have been that way for awhile now...oh well....maybe the "new Hiarcs will have it...(?)...??
Use the /hiarcs directory
Here is your solution. PGN files must be in a top-level directory /hiarcs on the storage card, and they must have a .PGN suffix, for instance, mygames.pgn. Then and only then will Palm Hiarcs Manager see the PGN files.
Re: Use the /hiarcs directory
That's what it was, thanks!! Hiarcsmngr already created the folder in the root directory of my card when i first launched it and made a backup of my current gamesdb, i just didnt put two and two together to think of putting the actual pgn file into that folder, thanks alot for your help....now it's of to hours of analysis....from my now-much-very-liked-because-i-can-view-pgn-files-treo-700p..!!chipschap wrote:Here is your solution. It is still very much on the to do list but the list is getting bigger and bigger. The longer you wait the better the Hiars engine inside your Palm will be - it will almost certainly be based on Hiarcs12 now.ljj8503 wrote:just curious....any word on the release date for the new palm hiarcs? it's been kinda silent around here about this, just keepin hope alive !!
