Which is better for Palm Hiarcs?

Post by Ted Summers »

Which is better for Palm Hiarcs? Intel 312 MHz ARM or Intel 200MHz Xscale.

Thanks

I don't know about Palm but PPC's have these processors too.The 312 Mhz processor comes from the PXA270 family of intel bulverde processors. These are more modern than the older PXA250 and PXA255 which I imagine the 200 Mhz Xscale comes from.So I would say the 312 Mhz model would outperform the 200 Mhz model quite easily. If I remember rightly Chess Tiger for palm had publised some benchmarks for the various Palm devices and this would give a rough idea of the processor performance.

I just checked on the Chess Tiger website and saw some Tiger Mark bench marks for the following.
Zire 31 200 MHz (Tiger mark 1.66)
Zire 72 312 MHz (Tiger mark 2.64)
The best result I saw was using a Tungsten-T3 overclocked to 592MHz to give a Tiger Mark of 5.01.
Imagine what would be available if Palm had created devices that used the intel 624 MHz model of processor and then overclocked it to over 700 MHz.

I am not a specialist, but I believe that the two processors which spoke Tedd, surely they are Intel Xscale, when we say ARM we are simply saying that the Xscale are a derivative of the ARM.

When we choose our model, I believe that we can act with the same logic as a PC, where most MHz device has is best (90% of the time). So the 312 Mhz will be more than 50% faster than the 200 MHz and possibly be a more modern chip. Of course we will have to look at other things too, like on a PC memory is very important, so is here, connectivity ...
