hi Harvey

my thoughts on the match so far..

i thought game one showed some excellent if not beautiful Endgame play by Palm Hiarcs which was not using table bases(neither is Res II)

its refreshing i think to see an engine play an endgame like that on the "fly" and not falling back on table bases

Game two was an emotional Roller Coaster where during the last 15 moves or so Rybka's evaluations fluctuated from -.50 to -2.5 and then to 0.00

for most of the middle game the Res II was down the Exchange+P and yet only showed Pv's of less then -.75 or so

i havent seen Rybka in action until now(as this is the only dedicated to have a Rybka engine ) and it seems to use a highly unique evaluation method

i will come packin for games 3 and 4 regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

The crucial point for Hiarcs was when it missed 49...Rd3! in game 2. I remember you commenting during the game that Rybka suddenly realised it was in trouble was it after 35...d5?

Thanks,

Harvey

yes

Rybka's PV plummeted from -.5 ish to under -2.2
even though it was still down the same material (Exchange and Pawn) before and after d5
it was as if something about d5 jarred the program into reporting a more realistic evaluation

again i have virtually no experience with the engine so i cant say if this is typical for Rybka or if something unique for the port to the Xscale 500 Mhz processor
but i do know that the engine being used is the same exact engine as Rybka 2.2 (with Rajlichs permission of course) and only with some compilation changes made by Ruud

Wife Still Pissed Regards

whatever the final result will be, i am very happy that a few days ago i bought a tungsten t3 with 400mhz cpu.

seems this was the right thing to do :-)

Hi mclane,

Palm Hiarcs 9.6 is indeed an excellent program that runs very well on the Palm Tungsten T3 - I have had one for 2 years and am very impressed with performance and functionality. The claims made on the Hiarcs site are not exaggerated in terms of it's 2614 elo strength (using ARMS engine and hash tables).

But don't forget that you can also overclock you Tungsten T3 using Lightspeed - download from:

http://www.clievideo.com/default.asp?it ... roductID=3

This allows you to overclock each application so on the T3 you can speed up Hiarcs 9.6 by 50% to reach search depths faster, which makes a significant difference to performance (By the way you can also "underclock" the whole PDA using Lightspeed, to increase battery life).

I have been using the overclock safely for several months with complete stability and no problems.

yes indeed. i am using lightspeed on my other palms.
you are right.
IMO the tungsten t3 is a wondermachine for chess players.

they should have advertised this , maybe they (Palm) would not have been so easily bancrott or lost against windows pda's.
