Novag Savant 2...mint condition...
but sadly, with the exception that the display is out:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Schachcomputer-Novag ... 19bd73ca9a
I was wondering if keeping the units under refrigeration all along would
have prevented this from happening to all these machines. Too late now,
of course.
Still, for the collector who does'nt consider non functionality to be
an issue, this one is quite worthy of a part in the collection.
To me, a chess computer computes chess, by definition. When it breaks
down it ceases to be a chess computer until it's fixed.
nice day all...

I know the seller and I know the machine.
The problem is: There is no Savant with a working display! It is a serial fault! So you will have no chance to get today a one with working display ... very sad ...
Regards,
Sascha
i have 7 Savants
5 Savant I
1 Savant II
1 Savant Royale
all screens defective
however i have one Savant I that still recognizes the touch move by the player
and all of the function keys are still OK
so if you connect the printer a game can be played and printed out
i played a few games and posted them on the CCC a few years ago
i should check to see if the Savant still recognizes the players touch move today
To Do List Regards
Steve

If they all have the same fault the fix by a trained technician might be the answer.Steve B wrote:CorrectMythbuster wrote:Hi,

Likely it's a short in the same place for all LCD screens.

actually the problem with the Savant displays are that the pieces were depicted with the use of some sort of black chemical powder or substance that filled the LCD screen
over the years this powder or chemical has evaporated or leaked into the screen
so all Savants today have totally blank screens(if the substance evaporated) or totally black or darkened screens(if the substance leaked)
i wish it were only a minor electronics problem or even a major electronics
problem because that could be fixed
i know of at least two highly qualified dedicated chess computer repairmen who tried to fix the Savants but could not
a couple of years ago i bought a totally new..still in shrink wrap ..Savant I on Ebay
the computer was never removed from its plastic wrapping..never used and never touched by human hands once it left the factory
brand spanking new...
i took a shot and bid high and won
the screen was totally defective
Brand New And Just As Defective Regards

If the circuits are intact then maybe there's a way to replace the liquid crystal and any film that was damanged?

a Mystery Electronics Engineer having read this thread has surfaced literally out of the Blue and contacted me
he thinks he has some ideas on how to repair the Savant Display defect
i shall be sending him an otherwise perfectly working one(computer still recognizes players touch...all function keys work..processor still works...etc..etc..)
i am not holding out any hope.. but hey...
Ya Never Know Regards
