someone in the schachcomputer.info forum has written an emulator of the famous and unique Thomas Nitsche and Elmar Henne Mephisto Glasgow
world computer chess champion.

you can now play with this super 16bit program on your pc. depending on how fast your pc is, you will get a speed increase too.

i did a small 40/120 test game of the emulator on my sempron3000+ with the emulator running as 20mhz machine, and let it play against my palm m100 with 16mhz against genius1.3.

i know that mark uniacke is a fan of this chess program by nitsche/henne too, so he maybe would like to try the emulation.

here when you start it:

here a picture of the emulator working:

This Mephisto III program is unique because it is only doing 3-5 NPS
and is capable to play a good game of chess .

on my intel6300 (no overclocking) the mephi III S emulator makes 36 NPS instead of 3-4 of the commercial 12 mhz version.

Thomas Nitsche today (on the left) 3rd with 4 from 5 in a chess-open in his home town. Mephisto III is alive!

You don't have to wait for Mclane to have your question answered ;-) First you have to download the Windows binaries for the latest mess build from here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/60184244/mess.zip

I've compiled a Macintosh version in case anyone needs it. After you've unzipped the archive place the downloaded roms as one zip-file named glasgow.zip in the roms-folder and run the emulator.

Is as simple as that ...

Greetings Mike

Yes, wonderful! :D

A chess program based on a different paradigm, I have always admired Mephisto 3 - I still have the original Mephisto III exclusive and on level2/3+ it plays a nice game and searches only about 2-3 nps.

At the time the Spracklen's and others were doing about 1,000nps. So you can see the contrast in approaches.

Ok, I had better download the emulation...
Best wishes,
Mark

exactly. really cool. and thomas is "still" in the chess area, only now he plays himself or watches his 2 sons playing.

cool.

download the emulator and download the 4eproms from my homepage:
http://www.thorstenczub.de/MEPHI3S.ZIP

rename the file into glasgow.zip and put the eprom files as glasgow.zip into the subdirectory ROMS of the mess directory.

then start it. try it out with 100% and try it with "unlimited" speed and maybe also try frameskip to auto instead of 0.

suddenly mephisto III makes so many NPS you cannot really watch the display ! i use level 8. there you can INCREASE the computing time.
calculate how fast your emulator is in relation to the ORIGINAL module
and give the computer that much more time, so the clocks run as normal.

this way i am playing e.g. against genius running as ARM engine on my palm zire21 overclocked to 200 mhz.
and ... as you can imagine... mephisto III is NOT dying.

i will also try against hiarcs :-)

OK, let's try it again ... step by step

1. Download http://rapidshare.com/files/60184244/mess.zip to your harddisk and unzip the archive. If you have WindowsXP you can use the bult-in Uncompress feature, but you can also use WinRAR.

2. Now you should have a folder named mess on your harddisk with a few subfolders (one of them named roms which should be empty)

3. Now download http://www.thorstenczub.de/MEPHI3S.ZIP and rename the file to glasgow.zip.

4. Drag the file to the folder roms below the folder mess you created while extracting the first archive (1. step)

5. Run Mess.exe and choose the Glasgow Rom (Mephisto III S)

6. Have fun ....

Mach2000,

on step 5:

5) run Mess.exe ......

after running Mess.exe i have the followin screen that says:

a) TYPE NAME OR SELECT: (random)
b) Glasgow Mephisto III S Glasgow
c) CONFIGURE GENERAL INPUTS
EXIT

MEPHISTO III S Glasgow
1984, HEGENER & GLASER MUNCHEN
OVERALL:WORKING
Gfx:ok SOUND:ok

then i select:Glasgow Mephisto III S Glasgow (b), and i have the following messagge:

THE SELECTED GAME IS MISSING ONE ORE MORE REQUIRED ROM OR CHD IMAGES. PLEASE SELECT A DIFFERENT GAME.

as you told me on step 4 i drag the rename file "Glasgow.zip" and drop it on the empty subfolder "roms" ???
