Collector's Corner..Hiarcs Forum Exclusive.Resurrection II..

Post by Steve B »

In yet another in a looong line of Hiarcs Chess Forum Exclusives

The Resurrection II has arrived and in addition to the engines found in the Res I it also has Rybka 2.2 and Toga 1.2

the display is like the Tasc display :
Image
loaded with Rybka 2.2(and Noomen Book) the Elo should be very close to 2600..perhaps even a tad higher

here is a first game against the Chess Master 9000 running on my Pentium M Laptop(1.8 Ghz)

Res II draws easily

time control was 30 seconds per move
the Res II reached 10 ply easily within the 30 seconds and in the endgame as high as 14 ply

CM9k was out of book first at move 12

[White "Res II-Rybka 2.2]

Hi Steve, Very interesting! How much did you pay for ResII and could
you please give me the contact details of the seller? I'm interested in
buying....of course provided I don't have to mortgage the house.
jealous regards
Larry
PS Am I correct in assuming ResII will run on a Modular?

hi Larry
yes the Res II(like the Res I) is a set of three modules and it will work in any of the three Mephisto boards

you can PM Ruud Martin directly for all info on the Res II Modules
he is a member here

his profile also has a link to his web page:

Congratulations Steve & Ruud,

this is cool to see such a nice display (as well as a famous program too) inside a Mephisto board !

how do you feel after having played with a non dedicated chess system (i.e. laptop + chessmaster) ?
...
but may be it was not the first time and you know a lot more about programs than what you say regards  ,

Alain

Thanks Alain
I Played against a PC Engine in a rare moment of weakness
i just wanted to play a quick game to test the Res-II

NOW for a far far more interesting game against a DEDICATED chesscomputer

the Res I -Fruit 05..Active Rating 2514(.INFO Boyz)

time control-Game 30 Min.

in the Game Res I searched typically 7 ply Brute and 19 Ply Selective
While the Res II typically searched 10 ply
Res II -Rybka had black and was out of book first at move 9

the Res II has three different Noomen Books
Standard
2600 Grandmaster
World Championships

i selected the WC Noomen Book :

Image

[White "RES I-Fruit 05"]
[Black "RES II-Rybka 2.2]
[TimeControl "Game 30 Min"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

FINAL POSITION
[fen]5Q2/p6p/p7/6P1/6K1/8/Pk6/2q5 w - - 0 50[/fen]

i called it a draw as both computer were showing PV's of 0.00 and both had about 10 minutes left on the clocks
with both Kings in the open the game would have just gone on with endless checks until someone hit the 50 move rule

Yet Another Draw Regards

Sadly Paul ..before i can even think about taking on the Big Boyz it would be nice to see the Res II-Rybka even beat the Res I-Fruit 05 which is running on a processor about 1/2 the speed

As Res I-F05 drew with the white pieces in game 1 i gave the white pieces to Res II-R2.2 for another Game in 30 min

this time i tried the Noomen GM2600 book but the RII was out of book by move 4!

[White "Res II-Rybka"]
[Black "Res I-Fruit"]
[Time Control "Game 30 Min"]

1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3 e5 3.e3 Nc6 4.Nf3 Be7 5.Be2 O-O 6.O-O Bb4 7.a3 Bxc3

FINAL POSITION

[fen]r7/1q5k/7p/2p2Pp1/4p3/3b4/p1B3K1/Q3B3 w - - 0 67[/fen]

Res I is up four pawns and the Exchange showing a PV of +9.93
Res II was showing -9.99 which is a resignation

thats a draw and a loss to the 2514 Res I Fruit

That's disappointing to say the least. Can't believe the Res II was out of book at move 4?! I wonder how big each of Noomens books are? When did the Res I leave book?

Given that the strength increase is something like 100elo (?) then wouldn't we expect the Res I to win about 25% of the games anyway? You might just have been unlucky with this one game?

Still hoping Res II is a monster regards

That is a strange result.Rybka is a better engine than Fruit and Rybka is running on a much faster processor. It would be interesting to see if the moves by Rybka res II are comparable to Rybka PC version.Of course the PC version would be running alot faster but you would expect to notice similar moves suggested at the corresponding depths.I can only guess at the reasons but Rybka might have a much larger memory file than Fruit and for Rudd to fit it in the confines of the module system then something might have been lost in translation.
Please play some more games just to see if this was not a one off result.

Just did some checking of the 2nd game posted and see the decisive error was 53 Qe1? and I find it hard to believe Rybka would play this move.So I tested the PC version of Rybka beta 1.0 and see immediately that it prefers 53 Qc1 at D=10 and keeps it as the best move. When I force 53 Qe1 the evaluation turns to over - 1 and sees that White is in serious trouble.

this is interesting... I was going to answer that we should not be surprised by the results of so few games but now I don't know what to think :?

I don't know the hardware of the Res II (ok, it is probably described on Ruud's site) but I can tell you that the speed difference between a Pocket PC (hardware close to Res I) and a PC is enormous and 30 seconds on Res could be equivalent in total nodes to just 2-4 seconds on a "normal' PC.

best regards,
Alain

HI Alain and Cubeman and Paul

i have emailed Jeroen and asked him about the differences in his three books

you can see the hardware specs for the Res II on the page i set up for the Res ll..look under the larger photo:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10261668@N ... 195096455/

the specs for the Res I are here:

Strong-arm SA1110 processor-203 Mhz-32MB Ram

another game vs Res I Fruit 05 coming up..Fruit will take White again
but at a longer level ..of 1 minute per move
Rybka will use the Standard Noomen book

Hi Steve,

as far as I remember because I cannot reproduce easily the test :
- Toga under CEBoard on a Axim X50v : ARM processor at 624 MHz, so supposed to be faster than Res II => around 30-40 KN/s
- Toga on my laptop : 800 KN/s

Wish I could give such figures for Hiarcs instead of Toga regards,
Alain

Palm Hiarcs 9.6 and 9.7 prefers Qc1 immediately and sticks with it all the way.

I showed Palm Hiarcs Qe1 and it almost immediately dropped 0.6 pawns.

Palm Hiarcs hungry for a fish meal soon regards,
Best wishes,
Mark
