Collector's Corner...On The Fidelity EAG V5

Post by Steve B »

Well the V5 made its way safely across the pond to join the collection proper
i am relieved to report that it arrived in good form

A review of the special dual-processor EAG manual reveals that the actual speed up achieved is about 1.7x and not a full doubling of speed
there is a two page letter from the Spracklens in the manual explaining the loss of .3 in speed due to various hardware overhead causes
for those interested in the technical details the 2 page letter can be found here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/10261668@N ... 0922170604

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10261668@N ... 922170604/

there is an option to turn OFF the second processor so i preformed a simple test to see the speed up achieved
interestingly..the manual discusses that with the second processor disengaged.. the single processor runs at 98% the speed of a normal V2...
again due to hardware overhead causes
so the single processor-V5 plays a slightly weaker game then the normal V2

i set the computer for INFINITE Time
i cleared the hash memory and played these moves
1.a3 g6
2.a4

[fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppp1p/6p1/8/P7/8/1PPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 2[/fen]
In this position:
the dual processor achieves 8 ply in 174 seconds and will play 2.Bg7
the single processor achieves 8 ply in 327 seconds and will also play 2.B
g7
That is about a 1.89x speed up
i imagine over the course of a full game the speedup would come down a bit to the 1.7x reported by the Spracklens

i dug up some old price lists and i notice that the V5 retailed for $1600 and the V2 Retailed for $1000..the V5 Only $600 more then the V2
in fact the V5 was the second cheapest EAG you could buy with all of the other versions selling for a higher price !
the V6 retailed for $1000 more then the V5
the value of a V5 versus a V6 today show an entirely different picture with two V5's recently selling for about $2500 on Ebay and V6's have sold for somewhat less then that..certainly not $1000 more
you just never know what something will be worth years from now i guess

Selective Search rates the V5 at 2051 with the V2 at 1981 and the V6 2070
Fidelity(never known to be conservative in their estimated ratings) guesstimated that the V5 would be only 50 Elo better then the V2 and 50 weaker then the V6

SS shows a 70 point increase over the V2 and only 19 less then the V6

I do plan on posting a 10 game match (colors reversing) at 1 minute per move pitting the V5 against the Designer MACH IV V6
i didn't choose the EAG V6 because getting both of those table top computers to fit on my on my desk along with my laptop would be no small feat!

Double Jeopardy Regards
Steve

Sadly, I doubt very much I will ever own one of those things. The shipping
is becoming horrendous, and I am an extra ocean away. Australia is a chess
computer desert...in six years following chess comps on ebay I have noticed
hardly any for sale here that I have wanted. Even little brother New Zealand
seems to have more chess comps.
The other day I bought an Exclusive board with MMIV modules, superb
condition, from Jon (Monsieur Plastique), and met him personally in the
process.
Congrats on the V5, have much fun with it. Looking at the prices those
things went for when new, no wonder there were not many sold. Only the
well heeled could afford them. In those days I was raising a family and had
no hope of getting a big wooden Mephisto or Fidelity board, had to content
myself with poor man's plastic machines. I remember having to sell each one
when the following model was released. The big Mephisto Munchen was the
"Rolls Royce" of chess comps.
all the best,
Larry

Thanks Larry
i can certainly sympathise with you when you mention the high shipping costs to get something to you "Down Under"
i remember that chess computer swap we had earlier this year
each of us was to pay our own shipping costs
it cost me an arm and a leg to ship that computer to you
in fact ..the shipping was more then i paid for the computer itself!

Limping and Grasping Regards

The 10 game match begins with the EAG V5 having white and drawing first blood Vs. the Designer Mach IV

for the 10 game match both computers will have the "ALL OPENINGS" option engaged in order to get some good variation of game play

In the first game Mach IV opens with a Center Counter game and is out of book by move 5
things were about equal until the MACH IV swallowed a poisoned pawn on move 14 and its position deteriorated rapidly

This is the first published game on the net played by a V5

Game two sees the Mach IV come right back to even up the score
in this game the V5 was out of book first at move 7
Mach IV played the exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez and it just seemed to bewilder the V5 who never even had a chance to O-O

I am the very happy recipient of the Novag Amber that Jon put up with your Exclusive MMIV. It is also in superb ('astounding' would work also) condition- about as close to new as a used item can be- and that includes the box and manual. I have so much respect for those who take good care of their electronic gadgets be they chess computers or laptop computers (which I have more than my fair share of from eBay). Overall, this was a very nice transaction, the distance from Australia to the U.S. and related postage notwithstanding. :) It arrived in only 8 days which is equal to or less than packages coming from much closer Canada.

I am a minor collector with an emphasis on smaller portable units given the travelling I do. I have some of the usual suspects, Mephisto Advanced & Expert Travel, Novag Star Opal, Novag Amethyst Plus (albeit a weaker unit) etc., but the Amber will be the jewel in my portables crown. I never expected to find one, let alone in this condition.

In game 3 both computers were in book until move 14
The V5 Played a Queens Gambit which the Mach IV declined
the game was a wild slug fest with neither player able to 0-0

In Game four the V5 bounces back to even up the score of the match
Mach IV surprises with the Trompowsky attack(my own personal favorite against 1..Nf6)
both computers were in book until move 5

This game its the Mach IV that forgets to 0-0 and winds up 2 pawns down in a B of Opp. Colour endgame
the V5 displays solid endgame technique and bring's home the bacon

Game 5 sees the V5 Open with the English
somewhat surprisingly ..the Mach IV is out of book here at move 4!
both sides manage to 0-0 in this game (which for this match is a rarity)
apparently exhausted from their previous 4 games ..neither computer
wanted to mix things up in this game and both traded down as much material as fast as they could leaving the position
lifeless and a draw was agreed upon

For the second half of the match i decided to replace the Designer Mach IV with the Excel Mach IV
Both computers have the same exact program and hardware
the difference is in the housing.. with the Designer sporting a spiffy sleek design straight from the fashion runways of Paris
while the Excel lumbers on with that tedious "Humpback" appendage straight from the bell towers of Notre Dame
one nice difference between the Designer and Excel is that the Excel can display the number of nodes it is searching while the Designer does not

Game 6 sees the matches second Ruy Lopez and the game eventually drifted into a drawn position
amazingly in what looked like a drawn endgame the V5 sacked a few pawns to create two passed pawns and won
a study of the endgame here probably shows that White could have drawn or perhaps even could have won but the result is ..what it is

Game 7 sees the matches first Sicilian
here the Mach IV was out of book by move 4
in this game it was the V5 that avoided 0-0 ing(is that a word?)
neither computer seemed to have a plan in the game ....with both sides shuffling pieces along their first two ranks when suddenly the Mach IV hit upon the idea of a full scale King side attack swinging all of its pieces towards the V5's kingside.the attack proved too much for the V5's dual processors

Game 8 sees the second English with both computers in book until move 12
Black wins yet again.
it seems in this match having white is an actual disadvantage!
a wise man involved in Computer chess from the beginning once told me that in the early days having the white pieces in a computer chess tournament was actually a disadvantage because your program would be the first to blunder!

Game 9 and the V5 gets white for the last time in the match
the game features a none pawn opening move with the Mach IV out of book by move 6
the V5 made the somewhat dubious decision to exchange a B+N for R+P but could make no head way and the game ended in a draw

FINAL POSITION
[fen]8/8/8/1K4p1/P1n3P1/1kb4R/8/8 w - - 0 77[/fen]

the V5 is showing a score of +.15 and the Mach IV is showing +-0.00
perhaps this is a win for white or perhaps for black but these computers thinking for 60 seconds per move wont find the win and the game would drag on until the 50 move rule was invoked so i adjudicated the game drawn

V5 leads 5-4 Regards
Steve
