Who is Raffael?

We like to bring you some exclusives on this forum. For a long time there have been rumours about who Raffael is on playchess:

Press conference with Garry Kasparov in Hluboka, Czech Republic (30.3.2008)


Question 1: Do you know something about the nickname Raffael?
GK: Of course, I know Raffael. I am playing on playchess server sometimes.
Question 2: Mr. Kasparov, is Raffael you?
GK: If I want to uncover my identity, I am going to do it officially myself. I'll be not waiting till someone asks me to do it.


An experienced Czech journalist comments it: His answer means diplomatic yes.
Eyewitnesses: His face during the answer said everything, Kasparov is Raffael for sure!

Since I don't play on playchess, can someone add some comments on why Raffael is more interesting than other names there? In other words, why did someone take note and decide to ask the question?

maybe raffael plays good chess ?

Raffael is often at the top of the Playchess rating list - but most of the other top twenty are well known GMs.

The identity of Raffael has been talked about for some years.
I don't believe in intuition, but I've got a funny feeling that one day I will...

I think it is some sort of Raffael phenomenon that exists on the Playchess.com server.

Seems one guy started this stuff and like a chain reaction it become fashion to wonder about who Raffael is.

He is so famous, because I think he for quite some time now is in the top list of the blitz players with a rating in blitz of almost 3400.

Most players are known, but he he does not tell his name and is so strong: thus one becomes curious who is he.

I think GK always wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and hence chose the name `Raffael` :P
