Hiarcs .. a slightly different side ..

Post by Peter Grayson »

The fascination of Chess engine games at blitz is that the engines still play high quality chess that most of us would be proud of. One aspect of Hiarcs' game is that given the slightest chance it is quite capable of pulling apart its opponent with a deep attack Perhaps what many forget is that Hiarcs has a good balance of positional and endgame knowledge too as demonstrated in this recent 3M blitz game on the Playchess server.

Against all the odds with its opponent on fast hardware with Rybka 2.3.2a mp pumping out 550 kN/s +, Hiarcs 11.2 mp on my now ageing 4800 x2 found one chink in Rybka's armour and a few moves later the result was never in doubt. After 49. c5 the position was active but did not seem decisive. Rybka's reply 49 .. dxc5 was just plain wrong highlighting that in this slightly unbalanced position, Hiarcs' knowledge appeared superior to Rybka.

Another example where Hiarcs evaluation and strategy was correct and Rybka's evaluation was questionable.

Hello Peter,

I found 25 Rxh6!? to be an interesting exchange. I thought the resulting position to be unclear to my human eyes. I felt that white had the initiative but could not figure out how he would maintain it. Thank god Hiarcs did. 8) It feels like I am watching the play of Hiarcs evolve. I somehow feel the the progams style of play is changing somewhat after looking at the games of the latest beta. It sure is getting stronger. Thanks for the game.

Your chess position display

Post by Jack Clark »

Hello, Ted-

Sorry for such an elementary question, but would you mind telling me what you used to add the game position display to your post here? This is something I need to learn how to do.

Thanks.
