Position Learning

Post by Linus »

I am not sure, how the H12 position learning feature works. There is a lrn file in which H12 stores evaluations of known positions. But when does it do that?

When I analyze a position in analyze mode and enter moves, file size and date of the lrn file do not change. When I ask the GUI to move, again file size and date of the lrn file do not change. Only when I change engine, the file date and time are updated. Does that mean that only when the engine is quit, the lrn file is updated? And what does it store in it then? Everything I have analyzed since the engine was loaded? I have a lrn file with a size of about 16 KB. Should it not be much larger?

yes, Hiarcs only writes out the learnt information when you quit the engine.

It stores positions it thinks are important and could change its view in the future.

Hiarcs is very selective about what positions need to be learnt as there is such a thing as too much of a good thing!?
Best wishes,
Mark
