How to post a Chess FEN! (Diagram)

Post by Enrico L. Carrisco »

[fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1[/fen]

Finally, FENs are available!! :D

Post your FEN using the following syntax:

When I have more time, I will see about creating a button for it to group with the other buttons such as QUOTE, CODE, LIST, etc.

Happy FEN posting! :D

This is nice but still a very important thing is missing:
-How the reader will get the fen from the picture to import/paste it in his Chess GUI?

When you see a fen you almost all times want to copy it to a Chess GUI to analyze it. But with the picture only this is not possible and you have to copy manually the position which is extremely inconvenient.
There is the other solution right now to select "View Image" in Firefox and then in the new page it appears you can copy a kind of FEN from the address bar. But this is not convenient also.....

You should make something like CCC: Have the FEN above the picture of the FEN in order the reader to be able to copy then FEN....
For example:

[fen]5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - - 0 1[/fen]
[fen]5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - - 0 1[/fen]

hi George
yes it would be nice to have the Fen notation on the top of the diagram but until it can be set up that way ..for now

you can click on "Quote" on any post and then the full Fen description will appear for cutting and pasting

i use IE 7 and it works perfectly that way

Hello George.

I agree, I missed the bill on that. :) I will look into it when I am back in town.

For now, it is probably easier to just paste the same FEN without using the [] identifiers. Hence:

5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - - 0 1
[fen]5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - - 0 1[/fen]

I will be working on the forum quite a bit as I now have a new found interest in PHP. I didn't know much at all about it before I tackled this project and I refuse to let anything get the better of me. ;)

Thank you for joining the forum and talk to you soon!

Best wishes,

Pasting FEN, without identifiers, into a GUI

Post by Jack Clark »

I tried just copying

5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w

and pasting into into the game notation window of Ole's Sigma Chess 6.1.5, but it didn't work.

However, when I tried the same thing with Rolf Exner's ExaChess 3.1.3, it worked perfectly. From ExaChess, it takes just a few clicks to copy the position as a game and paste it into Sigma Chess.

If anyone knows an even easier way to get the naked FEN line into Sigma Chess, please let us know.

For one thing, your fen is defective. You MUST add the castling rights and en passant square, '- -' in this case, to the end.

Yes,

Just copy the fen and in Sigma Chess go to Edit Menu and select Paste Position.
or
just press Apple+Option+v.

However, you must take a valid FEN like:

5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - -

Copying a FEN into Sigma Chess 6.1.5

Brilliant, Andreas!

Worked perfectly--once I started using valid FED lines. Thanks for pointing out that I hadn't been.

Steve, you can also right-click on the diagram, scroll down to properties, click on it and copy the fen from there.

I allways like as an added nicety to add the fen below the picture which saves the reader the trouble of figuring it out. It really is no extra work in your posts:

5n2/B3K3/2p2Np1/4k3/7P/3bN1P1/2Prn1P1/1q6 w - - 0 1

All the best

i guess you mean in the main game thread?
right now it is white to move so its from Whites point of view

by changing the "w"(undelined below in the fen string) to a "b" ..the diagram changes

so here is the fen string for the diagram now without the fen quotes
2rqkbnr/1b1p1ppp/p1n1p3/1p6/4PB2/2NB1N2/PP3PPP/R2Q1RK1 w k - 4 9

string for black from bottom:

2rqkbnr/1b1p1ppp/p1n1p3/1p6/4PB2/2NB1N2/PP3PPP/R2Q1RK1 b k - 4 9

diagram

[fen]2rqkbnr/1b1p1ppp/p1n1p3/1p6/4PB2/2NB1N2/PP3PPP/R2Q1RK1 b k - 4 9[/fen]
