Two boring games led to 2 draws. Honestly said, none of the chaps had deserved even half a point...

Berlin - Portorose: 1/2
After 20 moves in the opening and a few moves 3fold repetition.

[Date "2018.02.03"]
[White "Mephisto Berlin"]
[Black "Mephisto Portorose 68000"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

Portorose - Berlin: 1/2
A game without any ideas. The outcome, again 3fold repetition, would have been possible 20 moves before.

Hi all,

My London Vs Nick’s Almeria was a draw, the return game will be next weekend as this game was 100 mins. White had a slight advantage for a while, then Black looked dangerous for a few moves, but once Queens were exchanged, both Units seemed to aimlessly monoever their Kings, so a draw was agreed here:

..and here we are:

A fascinating game took place between Mephisto Portorose and Mephisto Lyon.

Soon in the late opening Lyon took initiative and Portorose had good luck for several times that Lyon did not recognize the opportunities that Portorose offered. The match was nevertheless very interesting, at least when Porto (had to give?) gave a rook for a knight plus a pawn. Some time later Lyon rendered back the rook, thus gaining a passed pawn on the a-line. This should have done it, but several times Lyon did not find the winning moves, Portorose did not find the best defence, but sometimes with "good luck".

The endgame showed a constellation Helge and I had never experienced before: each side had a knight, Lyon the last pawn on the board on the g-line, with its king aside, the Porto king far away... so the Porto knight had to do all the defence work. I expected the pawn to promote as it was supported by its king and the Porto king so far .... see the final.

Hi Walter and Helge,

you played already Portorose16bit vs. Lyon16bit on Jan. 21st this year - it seems, that you played this back round game twice but missed Lyon16bit vs. Portorose16bit from the first round up to now.

Could you clarify that?

Regards, Michael

Mephisto London 68000 - AL

The game was quite exciting as far as it goes when two LANGweilers play against each other :)

Position 1

[fen]2rb1rk1/p5pp/1n1P1p2/4pq2/2p5/P1N3B1/1P2QPPP/2RR2K1 w - - 0 24[/fen]

In this position Mephisto Almeria 68000 has a dangerous looking advanced pawn, but played a little inaccurately. Best would have been to play immediately 24. f3! followed by Bf2. Mephisto Almeria 68000 did play f3 a few moves later but by then any advantage was gone. Also worth a look in this position is the move 24. a4. Almeria played 24. Qd2 and then very next move Qc2?! which allowed the exchange of Queens.

Position 2

[fen]8/1r3k2/N2P1pp1/4p2p/R1p4P/3n1PP1/8/5K2 w - - 0 45[/fen]

By the time this position is reached, Mephisto London 68000 has a clear advantage and seemed to be well on the road to the winning finishing line. But Mephisto London 68000 also missed its best opportunities starting from this position. The move 46. ... Rb1+! was all powerful and would have won easily. Mephisto London 68000 played 46. ... c3? which was too soon as it allowed Mephisto Almeria 68000 to play 47. Rc4! and everything became complicated once more.

Position 3

[fen]3k4/3P4/6p1/1KN1p2p/7n/3R4/2r5/8 w - - 0 58[/fen]

A few moves later you reach this position and Mephisto London 68000 exchanges its Rook for the Knight. Not that hard a decisision really as the danger now was that London would lose the game if not careful.

Final Position

[fen]3k4/3P4/2K3p1/5n2/4p2p/8/1R6/8 w - - 0 66[/fen]

Draw by 3x repetition.

It was a fun game to play because of all those dangerous combinations that resulted from the advanced white pawn.

Best regards
Nick

Hi all,

If Walter or Helge can play my London, I’m free all day Monday and Wednesday this coming week, then I’m away for a Cruise and stay for 11 days.

Cheers,

Al.

Hi,

Walter's and Helge's second Portorose16bit vs. Lyon16bit dated Feb. 04 won't be evaluated for this tournament.

The game Lyon16bit vs. Portorose16bit is still open!

Tournament tables are up to date.

Hi all,

the game with correct colors was a draw after 32 moves, I would say kind of Grandmasters draw ...

here it is:

https://lichess.org/QXxuEfEV

After all, the portorose has seen a nice small tactical motif in the middle game (the one with the Queens exchange after Bishop motif)

Regards

Helge
