Round 2 Game 1:

AM68060 Sargon 3 - DB Socrates 3.0

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]rn2kr2/ppp3pp/4B3/8/1b3Bn1/6P1/PP1N3P/3RK2R w Kq - 0 15[/fen]

AM68060 Sargon 3 opened with a Kings Gambit which DB Socrates 3.0 accepted. In the above position AM68060 Sargon 3 is a pawn down but has a slight positional advantage. Both Kings are stuck in the center. DB Socrates 3.0 plays 15. ... Rxf4!? which is an interesting move. This leaves black with a Knight and two pawns as compensation for the Rook.

The position is very sharp and DB Socrates 3.0 plays sharply, but ultimately AM68060 Sargon 3's two Rooks start to dominate and DB Socrates 3.0 has to accept defeat.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]Q7/7R/4k3/2p2n2/4K3/8/1P5P/8 w - - 0 66[/fen]

King Sargon the third continues to rule! Not even a thinker like Socrates can stop him.... :)

That Sargon 3 continues to kick butt. I'm starting to regret not putting it in my Top 5 forecast for Div 2.

Are you familiar with these old chess programs that can be run directly through your web browser? https://archive.org/details/WindowsChess3.1_1020

What's your opinion of them?

Hi Tracy,

No I have never tried it. But it is interesting to see the programs work through a browser.

With 38 moves played the position was equal when MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 started to make mistakes beginning with the move 39. Qc4 in this position. The moves 39. e4 or 39. Kg2 would have been better.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/1p1k4/6p1/p3K3/8/1P6/8/8 w - - 0 61[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

MAC Sigma Chess 4.02, 30S. (2300)

W3X Chessmaster 4000 had stome strong opportunities throughout this game but kept letting them slip away. Just when it seemed that DB WChess 1.05 would scrape a draw DB WChess 1.05 made a game losing error with the move 55. Rh1? The only correct more in this position was 55. Bc6!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/2k5/P1P4p/1p6/1P6/1K2q3 w - - 0 76[/fen]

And so in this battle of historical giants, Chessmaster 4000 beats WChess 1.05.

In a game that I was about to adjudicate as a draw in a few more moves, DB Zarkov 2.61 decides to throw it all away playing 55. Kd6? The moves 55. b4 or 55. a4 threatenting to advance these queenside pawns would have assured a draw.

DB Chess Genius 2 is ahead by a pawn but MAC Gnu Chess 4.0 still had good chances to draw the game. This is the critical position where MAC Gnu Chess 4.0 needed to play 33. ... Rd7 with best chances for a draw. The move 33. ... e5? was a mistake that loses quickly.

The game looks like a draw when Mephisto Atlanta starts to make a few mistakes and ends up losing. The best move move in the above position is 33. Qb2. 33. Bxc5 works too. Mephisto Atlanta however played 33. f3? and that loses.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r1b2nk1/p5b1/2pNp1p1/qp1nP3/2pPB1Q1/6P1/PP3P2/R2K3R w - - 0 20[/fen]

Semi-Slav Defense: Botvinnik System, Lilienthal Variation ... now thats a mouthful of a variation to remember. Well I bet Millennium Chess Genius Pro wishes to have never played it as MCGP had no idea what to do with it. In this position MCGP who had already gotten away with a blunder a few moves earlier, blunders again with the move 20. ... Qa4+ and this time does not get away with it. The best move in the above difficult position was 20. ... Qb6.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6Q1/6k1/3PQ3/1K6/3P2P1/8/8/8 w - - 0 71[/fen]

Well I played book 2 with MCGP for the first two games without success, which I think is the Hiarcs book. It could be that this book is not ideally suited for the London style of play. Anyway I will persevere with it for 6 games and then switch it to the orginal London book (book 1) for the last 6 games and see how that compares.

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY
