CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/pR3pr1/3P1p2/4pP1p/r1pkP3/6PP/2R2K2/8 w - - 0 52[/fen]

The game seemed to be moving towards a draw with perhaps a slight advantage to AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00. However in the above positon Psion Chess makes a fatal mistake. The move 62. d6! is dangerous and requires accurate play which you can only obtain with the move 62. ... Rg8! Psion Chess however did not realize this and went after the pawn grab with 62. ... Kxe4? and loses the game.

This is the position where DB Siberian 2.15 makes the mistake that loses the game. In this position 30. ... Be6 or 30. ... Bd7 would have been ok. Siberian however played here 30. ... Bc2? which loses the exchange and gives DB Sargon 5 an easy win from this point onwards.

AM68060 Chess Simulator was in a defensive mess after the opening. However as the game progressed, AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 seemed to be letting Chess Simulator off the hook. In the above position a draw would have been likely had Chess Simulator spotted the 43. ... Ke7!. However this was missed and Chess Simulator lost after playing 43. ... Bc6?

Hi Nick,
I've replayed the game of Round 5 Game 7 AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive - AM68060 CP2150 on the PC version of CP2150 and noticed,
that CP2150 DOS makes significantly less mistakes. In the critical position e.g. it wants to play 34. ... b4! immeditely and not 34. ... Nxc6.
Apparently CP2150 DOS and CP2150 Amiga are not exacly the same program.

Hi Martin,

Yep I agree, it is hard for me to imagine that people can convert 100% accurately between 68,000 and PC DOS.

But you also have to watch search depth. Chris Whittington's programs are slow searchers so it reaches about 8 ply for CP2150 on Amiga. I don't know how deep you search on PC. Playing at P90 level the search is about 6-8 ply and overall as you could see from Division 4, Amiga CP2150 played significantly better than DOS CP2150.

Round 5 Game 11:

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator - AM68060 Checkmate Normal

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/HVizaZwX

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/p4n2/P4k2/3Bpp1P/8/4KP2/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator and AM68060 Checkmate Normal played the first draw of this round. However, there was one instance in the endgame where AM68060 Checkmate Normal missed the opportunity for a win. In the above position AT68060-32 Chess Simulator just played 64. Bd4? which is an inaccurate move. The correct move was 64. f3.

However in the above position AM68060 Checkmate Normal missed the following winning continuation:

64... f3+ 65. Kd2 Ng4 66. Bb6 Kg6 67. Ke1 Kh5 68. Bd8 Ne5 69. Bg5 Kg4 70. Bd8 Nc6 71. Bc7 Kxh4 72. Kd2 Kg4 73. Bb6 Kf5 74. Ke1 Ke6 75. Kd2 Kd5 76. Kc2 Ne5 and wins.

This was probably too complicated for these programs who are not capable of searching deep enough to understand this. Anyway AM68060 Checkmate Normal missed 64. ... f3+! and played 64. ... Nd7 instead.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r4rk1/2pqbppp/p1n1b3/1p1pP3/3Nn3/1BP5/PP3PPP/RNBQR1K1 w - - 0 12[/fen]

The above position shows that AM68060 CC2175 has some really bad opening moves it its repertoire. The move 11. ... Qd7 is part of its opening book and is really bad as it loses a Knight straightaway after 12. Nxe6! fxe6 13. Rxe4 as shown in the position below:

[fen]r4rk1/2pqb1pp/p1n1p3/1p1pP3/4R3/1BP5/PP3PPP/RNBQ2K1 w - - 0 13[/fen]

Round 6 Game 1:

DB Chessmaster 3000 - AM68060 Sargon 3

RESULT: 0-1

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/AymN9rLA

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r3b1k1/ppn4p/2p1p3/3pP2p/3P2P1/1P1BBr2/1PP5/2KR3R w - - 0 27[/fen]

This was the match of the last two programs without a loss in Division 3.

The one weakness that AM68060 Sargon 3 has is it's opening book, which is a little weak and risky for its play style in my opinion. Anyway, in this position after Sargon 3 finally opened the game, DB Chessmaster 3000 has a slight advantage with the moves 27. Rde1 or even 27. Kd2. However, DB Chessmaster 3000 played 27. Bh6?! instead which resulted in the following position a few moves later after the moves 27. Bh6 hxg4 28. Rdg1 Bg6 29. Rxg4 Kf7 30. Rg2 Bxd3 31. Rg7+ Ke8 32. Rxc7 Bg6 33. Rxb7 Rf2 34. Bd2 Rf7 35. Rxf7 Kxf7 36. Bh6 Rg8 37. Rg1 Be4 38. Rxg8 Kxg8 :

[fen]6k1/p6p/2p1p2B/3pP3/3Pb3/1P6/1PP5/2K5 w - - 0 39[/fen]

Now the game hast turned to AM68060 Sargon 3 advantage even though you have opposite colored Bishop's. White's weaknesses of course are Black's passed pawn on h7 and White's hard to defend pawns on d4 and e5. It's the kind of position that Sargon 3 has shown in previous games that it doesn't have a problem with. DB Chessmaster 3000 by the way played this endgame cluelessly.

[fen]8/p7/2p1p3/3pP3/1P1Pbk2/1P6/2PK4/8 w - - 0 57[/fen]

What is so enjoyable playing AM68060 Sargon 3 is that it often plays moves like 57. ... Bxc2! which in the above position is the fastest and easiest way to win. I doubt that there are many programs from the late 80s or dedicated computers that willingly give up their Bishop by playing 57. ... Bxc2!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/2p1p3/1p1pk3/1P6/8/3K4/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

Round 6 Game 2:

DB Kallisto 1.83 - DB Rex 2.30

https://lichess.org/MUnIqPlx

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/5pp1/8/3N4/2P2P2/3K4/8/7r w - - 0 46[/fen]

DB Kallisto 1.83 was completely outplayed in this game so far. DB Rex 2.30 leads with Rook for a Knight. All DB Rex 2.30 really has to do now is ensure that his King moves across the board to cover the passed pawn on c4 by playing Kf8 as soon as possible and the rest should be easy, right?

But it is amazing how so many of the old programs really have a hard time playing Rook and pawns against Knight and pawns whenever pawns are advanced as in the above position.

This game is another of countless examples that I have played over the years where Knight wins over Rook....amazing.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/3K2k1/5pP1/8/5N2/8/8 w - - 0 69[/fen]

Well all I can say and write is, lucky win for Kallisto 1,83 as a result of the ineptness of Rex 2.30 in this endgame.

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]8/1r6/p1N1p3/5k2/1PN5/2K5/8/8 w - - 0 53[/fen]

Here is another Rook vs Knight ending. This position is after white played 53. Nc4. This time we have an example of Rook plus 2 pawns vs 2 Knights and 1 pawn. It really makes you wonder if the best tactic here is to just accept a draw by sacrificing the Rook for the last white pawn on b4 and be done with the game with the knowledge and the confidence that you can't really lose a game with 2 Knights + King against King in an endgame unless you self engineer the loss yourself?

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/8/4p3/2N1k3/KP2N2r/8/8/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]

And here we have a nice example of a self inflicted loss. DB Psion Chess 1.01 plays 65. ... Rxe4? and promptly loses the game  (shock, horror and disgust!)

FINAL POSITION

DB Sargon 5 picked a bad opening. In the above postion DB Sargon 5 played 10. ... Qf8? with the intent of covering the exposed pawn on g7. This was a mistake from which it could never recover. The best move was to play 10. ... Qe7 and give up the g7 pawn.

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 has a slight advantage in the above position. The proper move here is 19. ... exf4 which not only removes the f5 threat but also opens up the a1-h8 diagonal for black's Bishop. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 errored with the move 19. ... CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/Bp4pp/3b4/5k2/3p1P1P/P2r4/1P2RPK1/8 w - - 0 38[/fen]

37 moves into the game and it looks like a draw. However as is typical for old programs that cannot search deeply enough, small mistakes start to happen in endgames. Probabaly the best move for AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 in the above position was to play 38. Re8 with a likely draw as getting behind Black's pieces and harassing the pawns makes it awkward for Black.

The next sequence of moves shows how AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 loses this game which should have been destined for a draw. 38. Bb6 Bxf4 39. Re7 Be5 40. Rf7+ Ke6 41. Rxb7 Rb3 42. a4 Rxb2 43. a5 d3 :

[fen]8/1R4pp/1B2k3/P3b3/7P/3p4/1r3PK1/8 w - - 0 44[/fen]

And AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive wins because of his advanced pawn on d3.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/pp6/2p1kb2/3p1P2/3P2Kp/1PP1r3/P2RN3/8 w - - 0 35[/fen]

DB Siberian 2.15 made too many small mistakes which in the end amounted to inevitably losing this game. The above position is one example where moving the pawn forward with 35. f5+ further weakens its postion and sets it up to lose that pawn. The best move in this position was probaly 35. c4 which perhaps would have allowed DB Siberian 2.15 to free up its cramped position and hope for some counterplay.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/p7/1pp5/6b1/2pP4/6k1/7p/5r1K w - - 0 57[/fen]

This was a good round for dedicated chess computers with all three winning their games.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/p2r1k2/1pR3pp/2p5/8/1PK5/P4PPP/8 w - - 0 38[/fen]

Rook ending, the game seemed a certain draw. But, in the above postion AM68060 Complete Chess System plays 38. ... Rd1? and gives up the pawn on a7. Perhaps it was trying to be agressive, who knows, but its game went downhill quickly after this giving AM68060 CP2150 an easy endgame win.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2r5/2PK4/6k1/2R5/8/6P1/8/8 w - - 0 67[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/p2q1ppp/1p3n2/4p3/8/2Q1P1N1/PP3PPP/6K1 w - - 0 22[/fen]

AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal has a position here which it should hold to a draw against its deeper thinking opponent. However AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal plays 22. ... Qd1+?! which does nothing other than allowing white's Queen to obtain the initiative and forces the loss of a Black pawn.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/8/5P1P/8/3k2K1/8 w - - 0 58[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r3kb1r/1bppqppp/p7/1pnNP3/8/1B3Q2/PP3PPP/R1B2RK1 w kq - 0 13[/fen]

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator is about to make a horrible blunder with the move 13. ... Qd8??. This sets up the sacrifice 14. Nxc7+ and a nice forced combination of moves that result in checkmate after 28 moves.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2rkr3/2RQ4/p2B4/1p1BP2p/8/8/PP3KPP/8 w - - 0 28[/fen]

Round 6 Game 12:

AM68060 Chess Simulator - DB Chess Friend

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/PKcik6qk

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]8/4k3/2K2p2/7p/1P3NbP/8/8/8 w - - 0 54[/fen]

In a game that probably should have been drawn, DB Chess Friend made a mistake when it played 53. ... Ke7? instead of playing 53. ... Kd8 to ensure that the passed pawn on b5 is covered. In this position AM68060 Chess Simulator just had to play 54. Kc7! to win but misses it and instead plays 54. b5? which gives DB Chess Friend another opportunity to draw the game.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/4k3/2K2p2/1P5p/5NbP/8/8/8 w - - 0 54[/fen]

So now after the move 54. b5? DB Chess Friend has another chance to draw the game with the move 54. ... Bd7+! and then taking the pawn on b5! But DB Chess Friend misses this as well and plays 54. ... Kd8? and promptly loses the game.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/1P2k3/2K5/5p1N/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1R6/5ppk/2q2n1p/8/1Q6/6PP/4R2K/3r4 w - - 0 56[/fen]

Here is another example where in an endgame that looks to be a draw, one of the programs makes a bad mistake and loses. This time it is DB Chessmaster 2000 who in this position just needed to play 58. Rg2. Instead DB Chessmaster 2000 plays 58. Re1? and gifts DB Grandmaster Active a win.

This is yet another example where a Knight beats a Rook :)

FINAL POSITION

[fen]1R6/5ppk/7p/8/8/6PP/8/3q2K1 w - - 0 62[/fen]

Strangely, DB Chess Fiz 0.16 plays 21. ... Bg4? giving up it's Bishop.

After this it took a while for DB Turbo Chess to figure out how to win, but it did in the end.
