Round 3 Game 6:

DB Chessmaster 3000 - AM68060 CC2175

RESULT: 1-0

https://lichess.org/mBM0kKdu

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/7p/4k1p1/1b1p1pP1/1N1P1P1P/5K2/8/8 w - - 0 87[/fen]

I should have perhaps adjudicated a draw much earlier in this game as nothing seemed to be happening at all. I did however let the programs play on and finally on move 87, AM68060 CC2175 mysteriously decides that it wants to lose the game. I don't know if this is a result of trying to avoid a draw through repetition or what. But anyway AM68060 CC2175 starts to blunder and loses after playing the move 87. ... Ke7?? That was all very strange.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/7p/3k2p1/1N3pP1/3P1P1P/5K2/8/8 w - - 0 90[/fen]

So DB Chessmaster 3000 wins this game, but only with help from his opponent.

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Chessmaster 3000, 60/30. (2137)

AM68060 CC2175, 30S. (2202)

I have been neglecting this tournament lately, so its time to play a few games.

Round 3 Game 7:

DB Grandmaster Active - DB YChess 1.09

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]5k2/1pp5/1p4p1/3KP3/n1B5/2P1r1P1/2R5/8 w - - 0 35[/fen]

DB Grandmaster Active never really got into this game but DB YChess 1.09 always seemed to let DM GM off the hook. But crucially after YChess played 34. ... Re3?!, DM GM again missed his last chance for a possible draw with the move 35. Rf2+!. DB GM played 35. Kd4?

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/1p2k3/1pp5/4P3/2PK4/7n/6r1/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Grandmaster Active, 60/30. (2109)

Round 3 Game 8:

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]rnbqrbk1/pp3p1p/3p1np1/1NpP4/5B1N/6PP/PP2PPB1/R2QR1K1 w - - 0 17[/fen]

Saitek Master Chess had a slight advantage up to this point which was carried over from the opening. However Master now played 17. b4? which seemed a bit strange. 17. e4 seemed like the natural move here.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4b3/2k2p2/6p1/8/4K3/4P3/8/8 w - - 0 56[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

Saitek Master Chess, 30S. (2168)

AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive seems to have Saitek Master's number.

Round 3 Game 9:

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r3r1k1/1p3p1p/p1pR1Pp1/PQ6/8/2P1b1B1/1P4PP/5R1K w - - 0 32[/fen]

This is where DB Chess Friend makes the mistake that ends up losing the game. The correct pawn to take the Queen with is 35. ... cxb5! Chess Friend played 35. ... axb5? which creates a passed pawn which loses the game.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4R3/5p2/2P2B2/1p4Pp/5k2/2P5/6PK/8 w - - 0 56[/fen]

Round 3 Game 10:

AM68060 Chess Simulator - Novag Sapphire II

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r4rk1/ppp3p1/6pp/2PpP3/3p2b1/P7/2PN1PPP/RR4K1 w - - 0 18[/fen]

Novag Sapphire II was positionally ahead up this point. I have no idea why Sapphire II decided not to play 18. ... b6 in this position. 18. ... Rae8 does nothing really other lose any advantage Sapphire II may have had.

[fen]5rk1/pRp3p1/6pp/2Ppr3/3p2b1/PN6/2P2PPP/R5K1 w - - 0 20[/fen]

A couple of moves later and instead of playing 20. ... Re2 with equality, Sapphire II plays 20. ... Re7? and starts to lose pawns.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/2k3N1/P6R/8/8/r4PK1/6PP/8 w - - 0 53[/fen]

Poorly played game by Novag Sapphire II.

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

Round 3 Game 11:

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r2q1rk1/p3bppp/bnp1p3/2p1P3/2Pp1P2/1Q1P1N2/PP1BN1PP/2KR3R w - - 0 13[/fen]

I guess this is why I enjoy playing Spracklen programs more than any other. Chris Whittington's DOS version of Complete Chess System just castled King side so of course Dan and Kathe Spracklen's Sargon decides to castle Queen side. Spracklen's just love to open things up and to attack.

[fen]3b1rk1/p2n1r1p/bqp1p1pP/2p1P3/Q1Pp1NP1/3P1N2/PP1BR3/1K3R2 w - - 0 27[/fen]

CCS just played 26. ... Ref8? and sets up Sargon 5 for a grand finish with the move 27. Nxe6.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]1n6/p3R3/2p4P/2P5/2Pk2P1/3PB3/P1K5/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

Nice looking checkmate with black's King on d4!

Hi Dave,

Yep definitely Sapphire II and Saitek Master Chess played some strange move. I double checked with Saitek Master to make sure it was playing on PS0 as well. Maybe they are just over matched with some of the opponents they have to play in Division 3.

We will see..

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2b1r1k1/1n1p1pbp/1p1P1qp1/3QN3/1P6/6B1/2P1BPPP/R5K1 w - - 0 19[/fen]

DB Chessmaster 2000 may have had a slight advantage in the above position had 19. ... Nxd6 been played. The move 19. ... Rxe5? that CM2000 played instead was a miscalculation as it ended up after a series of forced exchanges with AT68060-32 Sargon 3 being ahead with a Rook for a Knight. This was enough to win the game.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6R1/2P2n1P/1K2k3/8/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 73[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

AT68060-32 Sargon 3, 30S. (2122)

[fen]r5k1/2p2p2/2p1qnpQ/p1B1p2p/rPP1P3/P1RR1P1P/6P1/6K1 w - - 0 51[/fen]

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator played horribly in the opening resulting with most of its pieces being badly placed. Finally after 50 moves Chess Simulator had a chance to equalize after DB Siberian 2.15 had played 51. Bc5. In the above position before taking the pawn on b4, Chess Simulator should have first played 51. ... Nd7! forcing the Bishop to move away from its c5 square, and then follow it with 52. ... axb4. After missing this opportunity to equalize and creating some counter game with its doubled Rooks, Chess Simulator continued to make small mistakes which all ultimately piled up for an inevitable defeat.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4k3/2P2p2/3R1Pp1/4P3/5K2/7P/8/6r1 b - - 0 84[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1k2r3/ppr1n2p/2PR1pp1/1P2pq2/8/P4N2/1Q3PPP/3R2K1 w - - 0 26[/fen]

For a brief moment I thought that DB Max Rubin might actually play a decent game. In the above position Max Rubin has a decent advantage and the move 26. Rd7! looked very dangerous. Max Rubin played 26. cxb7 here which is still ok but shortly thereafter Max Rubin's game completely fell apart.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/8/4pp2/5k1p/2r2P2/3NK3 w - - 0 61[/fen]

Well it seems that for Max Rubin or Turbo Chess, the only chance for points is when they get to play each other.

DIVISION 3 FINAL RANKINGS PREDICTOR AFTER 3 ROUNDS

Image

I am showing the above prediction chart a little differently this time around.

It seems that the games played by AM68060 Sargon 3, AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive, Millennium Chess Genius and DB Kallisto 1.83 have so far been very sound.

All the predictions of Dave C and Volodymyr are also very much on track.

The chess program game performance is based on the average over the 3 games played so far.

Best regards

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]rnbqk2r/pp2bppp/8/2P5/4Q1n1/5N2/PPP1P1PP/RNB1KB1R w KQkq - 0 8[/fen]

Starting the game with 1.f4 Bird Opening, a From's Gambit was played. AM68060 Sargon 3 was out of book and just played 8. dxc5? which was not the right move and should have given AM68060 Checkmate Normal a decent advantage after 8. ... 0-0 and a good initiave as compensation for Black's loss of pawns. AM68060 Checkmate Normal however played 8. ... Qa5 and thereby missed its only chance in this game as AM68060 Sargon 3 did not let up after this and ended up completely dominating this game resulting in an easy win.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/3rbk2/2R5/p2p4/1p1P1Bp1/r3P1Pp/P1R1K2P/8 w - - 0 55[/fen]

54 moves have been played in this game which seemed for a long time as if it would end up in a draw, when AM68060 CP2150 makes the game losing mistake by playing 55. Kf1? DB Chessmaster 3000 is threatening to break through on the queenside. The best move to protect the queenside would have been 55. Rb6!

FINAL POSITION

Round 4 Game 4:

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 - Millennium Chess Genius

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r2q1rk1/ppp2ppp/1b1p1n2/8/1nPP2b1/2N2N2/PP2BPPP/RQBR2K1 w - - 0 12[/fen]

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 missed a great chance early in this game after some inaccuricies by Millennium Chess Genius. In the above position the moves 12. a3! or 12. c5 would have caused Millennium Chess Genius to loss of a piece for a couple of pawns. Needless to say Psion Chess missed it after playing 12. h3.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/5p2/2pp1rpk/p7/P1Pr3p/1P2P2P/4K1P1/3R4 w - - 0 41[/fen]

After 40 moves AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 enjoys a slight endgame advantage, but the above position is critical. Taking the Rook with 41. Rxd4! ensures a slight advantage with AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01. However, taking the Rook with the pawn 41. exd4 reverses fortunes and gives the end game advantage to Millennium Chess Genius. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 chose wrongly and after this Millennium Chess Genius showed that it had superior endgame skills.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/3p4/p1pP3K/P1P5/1P5P/5k2/6r1 w - - 0 64[/fen].

Round 4 Game 5:

DB YChess 1.09 - DB MChess 1.06

RESULT: 0-1

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/CNEdoruf

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]5rk1/1p1bpp1p/3p2pQ/q5Pn/p1rNP2P/P1N2P2/1PP5/1K1R3R w - - 0 19[/fen]

DB MChess 1.06 missed a nice winning sacrifice with 19. ... Rxc3! that opens up the King's defence and at the same time threatens to trap and win white's Queen. 19. ... Nf4 was played instead which was horrible and immediately gives YChess 1.09 a huge advantage.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]5rk1/1p1bpp1p/3p2pQ/q5P1/p1rNPn1P/P1N2P2/1PP5/1K1R3R w - - 0 20[/fen]

DB YChess 1.09 should have played 20. h5! here as the attack on black's King would have been devastating. DB YChess 1.09 played 20. Nde2 which still allowed for good advantage but it was not as good.

CRITICAL POSITION 3

[fen]5rk1/1p1bpp1p/3p2pQ/1q4P1/p1r1P2P/P4P2/1PP1N3/1K1R3R w - - 0 22[/fen]

Amazing, DB YChess 1.09 had just allowed DB MChess 1.06 back into the game when MChess played 21. ... Qb5? 22. Rd5! is so strong here followed by 23. ... h5! which again would have meant a nice win for White. YChess missed it and played 22. c3? and all advantage was gone.

CRITICAL POSITION 4

[fen]5r2/1p1bp1k1/3p2p1/5pP1/p1r1PN2/P1P2P2/1P6/1K1R3R w - - 0 27[/fen]

DB YChess 1.09 makes another mistake here which this time loses the game. The position is complicate and the best move here was probably 27. Rh4 with even chances. YChess played 27. Rh6? which miscalculates probably thinking that winning the pawn on g6 and Rooks on the open file would be enough for a white win. But it was a mistake as after 27. ... fxe4 Black gets strong central passed pawns.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]5k2/8/8/4p3/pP6/P1P5/4r3/1K6 w - - 0 47[/fen]

This was a complicated game with too many mistakes.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r4k2/3bqr2/1pp1pRQp/p1p1P3/P7/2PP4/1P3PPP/R5K1 w - - 0 34[/fen]

AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive had a great position here after having sacrificed his Knight to obtain it. The position needed patience and the right move was to get the other Rook into play with 34. Re1!. Checkmate however pawn grabbed with 34. Qxh6.

After this as the game progressed, the failed Knight sacrifice mattered and DB Rex 2.30 ended up winning the game.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]5k2/3p1pp1/3p3p/3Pp2n/1Pp1P3/5P1P/6P1/2N3K1 w - - 0 39[/fen]

With the passed pawn on b4, AM68060 Chess Simulator had a pretty good advantage. In the above position Simulator makes a mistake that ends up being costly. 30. Ne2! was the right move. The played move 39. g4? was horrible and loses.

DB Sargon 5 was superior to the Atari Sargon 3 version. Probably too much horsepower at P90.

I was going to give this game up for a draw a long time ago, but I kept playing to see what happens. Well in the above position which is an easy draw, CC2175 just needed to take the Rook with 105. Kxd3 instead CC2175 played 105. Re8? and lost.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/8/PP6/8/KP1rk3/8 w - - 0 57[/fen]

Saitek Master controlled this game and worked its way to a winning endgame. However in this position instead of moving its King into a position to help stop White's pawn advance with either 57. ... Kd3! or 57. ... Ke3!, Saitek Master shows that it has some endgame knowledge gaps after playing 57. ... Kd1?

FINAL POSITION

[fen]R7/1K6/8/2k5/8/r7/8/8 w - - 0 66[/fen]

This was a missed opportunity for a win.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]3k4/1rp3p1/2R1Pp2/1p5p/p3P3/P2K1P2/6PP/8 w - - 0 44[/fen]

The position looked like a draw after 43 moves. Its a position where Black has to defend its center but at the same time has to watch out of the pawn advance to b4. In fact in this position 44. ... b4 was the correct move to keep the game balanced. DB Chess Friend however messes up with the 44. ... g5? and loses quickly after this.

FINAL POSITION

Wow DB Grandmaster Active controls this game throughout and then messes up in the end and has to settle for a draw. Both 45. .. d5 or 45. ... c5 would have won easily. GM played 45. ... Nb6? which was a mistake.

DB Chessmaster 2000 occasionally plays some strange buggy ponder moves which is costly when it happens. In the above position CM2000 played 20. Qf8+? which of course loses the Bishop and the game. Pity the position was interesting with equal chances.

Round 5 Game 1:

AM68060 Sargon 3 - DB Kallisto 1.83

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/XCITQ7bM

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]rnbq1rk1/ppp2pbp/3p2p1/8/2PN2n1/2N3P1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 9[/fen]

Opening theory in this English position would have recommended 9. h3. AM68060 Sargon 3 however has little patience for slow build up chess and plays a more risky 9. h4.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]rnbq1rk1/pp4bp/2pp4/6p1/2PN2n1/2N3P1/PP2PPB1/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 13[/fen]

So now DB Kallisto 1.83 on move 13 has to decide between 13. ... Qf6! with advantage or 13. ... Qb6? with disadvantage for Black. DB Kallisto 1.83 chose 13. ... Qb6?

CRITICAL POSITION 3

[fen]rnb2rk1/pp4bp/1qpp4/6p1/2P3n1/2N2NP1/PP2PPB1/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 14[/fen]

On move 14 AM68060 Sargon 3 has an advantage so it was crucial that DB Kallisto 1.83 so it was crucial that DB Kallisto 1.83 plays the best possible move 14. ... h6 and not make Black's King position worse than what it already looked like. DB Kallisto 1.83 however makes a critical mistake by playing 14. ... Be6? which AM68060 Sargon 3 follows with 15. Qxd6 and a good advantage.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6Q1/p6K/5k2/1P6/3n4/7B/P7/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]

Well after the early excitement, AM68060 Sargon 3 missed a few opportunities to win the game sooner and DB Kallisto 1.83 defended quite well. The outcome however was inevitable with AM68060 Sargon 3 beating the Tournament leader who had a 100% record so far.

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

AM68060 Sargon 3, 30S. (2137)
5 Inaccuracies
1 Mistakes
0 Blunders
26 Average centipawn loss

DB Kallisto 1.83, 60/30. (2167)
13 Inaccuracies

On my Pentium I7, the Amiga Emulator allows Sargon 3 to search through 9 Ply. Typically it searches through 10/1, 10/2 or 10/3 before it moves. I am amazed at how good Sargon 3 plays on Amiga with this search depth. It would be scary to think what Sargon 3 could do if it were able to search say 20 deep. Who knows it might even be able to scare some of the engine boys.

Pity that Spracklen never took the Amiga version of Sargon 3 and converted it to WB or UCI and added some hash and a good opening book that suits its style.

Sargon 5 might have been the closest what Spracklen had on PC of their best program which they had Amiga/Atari. Difference between Amiga and Atari emulators is that Sargon 3 at 30 seconds reaches 10 ply on Amiga and 8 Ply on Atari. Hence the strength gap between Atari and Amiga. However it does nicely show the improved difference the 2 Ply make. Sargon 3 on Atari Emulator is already a good program, but on Amiga Emulator it is a great program!

Round 5 Game 1:

Millennium Chess Genius - DB Chessmaster 3000

RESULT: 0-1

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/ynhyfTXi

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]3r3k/pb6/6pp/2p3b1/2P1p3/1PN2p2/PR3PPP/5NK1 w - - 0 32[/fen]

I was really hoping after Kallisto's loss to Sargon 3 that Millennium Chess Genius would get something out of this game and consolidate a place near the top of the table. But then again Chessmaster 3000 was one of those computer chess programs that I played a lot on PC when it was first sold. I particularly liked the different built-in play styles and the ability to create your own. I used to spend hours, days, even weeks creating tournaments in which I would compete against the different styles and to see if I could win those Tournaments. I guess the thought that you were competing against such famous World Champions and Grandmasters of the past was the big attraction and you could dream about your grandeur and prowess when you beat them. Styles such as Capablanca, Lasker, Marshall, Morphy, Nimzovich, Tal. What possibly more could you have wanted in a PC chess program. Those were great times and nostalgic when you think back to those times.

Anyway, MCG really played the opening badly as you can see from the above position. The above position actually was the best opportunity for MCG to stay alive and salvage something. MCG needed to develop some counter play and 32. b4! would have been the best way to achieve it or 32. Nd5 even. MCG played 32. g4? which was not very good as it made the already cramped white game worse.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/7p/8/4p1Pp/4Pp2/3k1K2/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

So all considered this was quite an easy win for DB Chessmaster 3000.

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

Millennium Chess Genius, 30S. (2224)
5 Inaccuracies
6 Mistakes
1 Blunders
38 Average centipawn loss

DB Chessmaster 3000, 60/30. (2137)
4 Inaccuracies
2 Mistakes
0 Blunders
21 Average centipawn loss

Well Millennium Chess Genius was riding quite high in its Performance Evaluation after 4 games. But game 5's performance will most likely put a dent into MCG's year end bonus check.
