Round 3 Game 6:
DB Chessmaster 3000 - AM68060 CC2175
RESULT: 1-0

CRITICAL POSITION
[fen]8/7p/4k1p1/1b1p1pP1/1N1P1P1P/5K2/8/8 w - - 0 87[/fen]
I should have perhaps adjudicated a draw much earlier in this game as nothing seemed to be happening at all. I did however let the programs play on and finally on move 87, AM68060 CC2175 mysteriously decides that it wants to lose the game. I don't know if this is a result of trying to avoid a draw through repetition or what. But anyway AM68060 CC2175 starts to blunder and loses after playing the move 87. ... Ke7?? That was all very strange.
FINAL POSITION
[fen]8/7p/3k2p1/1N3pP1/3P1P1P/5K2/8/8 w - - 0 90[/fen]
So DB Chessmaster 3000 wins this game, but only with help from his opponent.

I guess this is why I enjoy playing Spracklen programs more than any other. Chris Whittington's DOS version of Complete Chess System just castled King side so of course Dan and Kathe Spracklen's Sargon decides to castle Queen side. Spracklen's just love to open things up and to attack.

Yep definitely Sapphire II and Saitek Master Chess played some strange move. I double checked with Saitek Master to make sure it was playing on PS0 as well. Maybe they are just over matched with some of the opponents they have to play in Division 3.
We will see..

It seems that the games played by AM68060 Sargon 3, AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive, Millennium Chess Genius and DB Kallisto 1.83 have so far been very sound.
All the predictions of Dave C and Volodymyr are also very much on track.
The chess program game performance is based on the average over the 3 games played so far.
Best regards

[fen]r2q1rk1/ppp2ppp/1b1p1n2/8/1nPP2b1/2N2N2/PP2BPPP/RQBR2K1 w - - 0 12[/fen]
AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 missed a great chance early in this game after some inaccuricies by Millennium Chess Genius. In the above position the moves 12. a3! or 12. c5 would have caused Millennium Chess Genius to loss of a piece for a couple of pawns. Needless to say Psion Chess missed it after playing 12. h3.
CRITICAL POSITION 2
[fen]8/5p2/2pp1rpk/p7/P1Pr3p/1P2P2P/4K1P1/3R4 w - - 0 41[/fen]
After 40 moves AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01 enjoys a slight endgame advantage, but the above position is critical. Taking the Rook with 41. [fen]5rk1/1p1bpp1p/3p2pQ/q5Pn/p1rNP2P/P1N2P2/1PP5/1K1R3R w - - 0 19[/fen]
DB MChess 1.06 missed a nice winning sacrifice with 19. ... Rxc3! that opens up the King's defence and at the same time threatens to trap and win white's Queen. 19. ... Nf4 was played instead which was horrible and immediately gives YChess 1.09 a huge advantage.

[fen]5rk1/1p1bpp1p/3p2pQ/q5P1/p1rNPn1P/P1N2P2/1PP5/1K1R3R w - - 0 20[/fen]
DB YChess 1.09 should have played 20. h5! here as the attack on black's King would have been devastating. DB YChess 1.09 played 20. Nde2 which still allowed for good advantage but it was not as good.
CRITICAL POSITION 3

Amazing, DB YChess 1.09 had just allowed DB MChess 1.06 back into the game when MChess played 21. ... Qb5? 22. Rd5! is so strong here followed by 23. ... h5! which again would have meant a nice win for White. YChess missed it and played 22. c3? and all advantage was gone.
CRITICAL POSITION 4
[fen]5r2/1p1bp1k1/3p2p1/5pP1/p1r1PN2/P1P2P2/1P6/1K1R3R w - - 0 27[/fen]
DB YChess 1.09 makes another mistake here which this time loses the game. The position is complicate and the best move here was probably 27. Rh4 with even chances. YChess played 27. Rh6? which miscalculates probably thinking that winning the pawn on g6 and Rooks on the open file would be enough for a white win. But it was a mistake as after 27. ... fxe4 Black gets strong central passed pawns.

I was going to give this game up for a draw a long time ago, but I kept playing to see what happens. Well in the above position which is an easy draw, CC2175 just needed to take the Rook with 105. Kxd3 instead CC2175 played 105. Re8? and lost.

Saitek Master controlled this game and worked its way to a winning endgame. However in this position instead of moving its King into a position to help stop White's pawn advance with either 57. ... Kd3! or 57. ... Ke3!, Saitek Master shows that it has some endgame knowledge gaps after playing 57. ... Kd1?

The position looked like a draw after 43 moves. Its a position where Black has to defend its center but at the same time has to watch out of the pawn advance to b4. In fact in this position 44. ... b4 was the correct move to keep the game balanced. DB Chess Friend however messes up with the 44. ... g5? and loses quickly after this.

CRITICAL POSITION 1
[fen]rnbq1rk1/ppp2pbp/3p2p1/8/2PN2n1/2N3P1/PP2PPBP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 9[/fen]
Opening theory in this English position would have recommended 9. h3. AM68060 Sargon 3 however has little patience for slow build up chess and plays a more risky 9. h4.
CRITICAL POSITION 2
[fen]rnbq1rk1/pp4bp/2pp4/6p1/2PN2n1/2N3P1/PP2PPB1/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 13[/fen]
So now DB Kallisto 1.83 on move 13 has to decide between 13. ... Qf6! with advantage or 13. ... Qb6? with disadvantage for Black. DB Kallisto 1.83 chose 13. ... Qb6?
CRITICAL POSITION 3
[fen]rnb2rk1/pp4bp/1qpp4/6p1/2P3n1/2N2NP1/PP2PPB1/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 14[/fen]
On move 14 AM68060 Sargon 3 has an advantage so it was crucial that DB Kallisto 1.83 so it was crucial that DB Kallisto 1.83 plays the best possible move 14. ... h6 and not make Black's King position worse than what it already looked like. DB Kallisto 1.83 however makes a critical mistake by playing 14. ... Be6? which AM68060 Sargon 3 follows with 15. Qxd6 and a good advantage.
FINAL POSITION
[fen]6Q1/p6K/5k2/1P6/3n4/7B/P7/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]
Well after the early excitement, AM68060 Sargon 3 missed a few opportunities to win the game sooner and DB Kallisto 1.83 defended quite well. The outcome however was inevitable with AM68060 Sargon 3 beating the Tournament leader who had a 100% record so far.

On my Pentium I7, the Amiga Emulator allows Sargon 3 to search through 9 Ply. Typically it searches through 10/1, 10/2 or 10/3 before it moves. I am amazed at how good Sargon 3 plays on Amiga with this search depth. It would be scary to think what Sargon 3 could do if it were able to search say 20 deep. Who knows it might even be able to scare some of the engine boys.
Pity that Spracklen never took the Amiga version of Sargon 3 and converted it to WB or UCI and added some hash and a good opening book that suits its style.
Sargon 5 might have been the closest what Spracklen had on PC of their best program which they had Amiga/Atari. Difference between Amiga and Atari emulators is that Sargon 3 at 30 seconds reaches 10 ply on Amiga and 8 Ply on Atari. Hence the strength gap between Atari and Amiga. However it does nicely show the improved difference the 2 Ply make. Sargon 3 on Atari Emulator is already a good program, but on Amiga Emulator it is a great program!

CRITICAL POSITION
[fen]3r3k/pb6/6pp/2p3b1/2P1p3/1PN2p2/PR3PPP/5NK1 w - - 0 32[/fen]
I was really hoping after Kallisto's loss to Sargon 3 that Millennium Chess Genius would get something out of this game and consolidate a place near the top of the table. But then again Chessmaster 3000 was one of those computer chess programs that I played a lot on PC when it was first sold. I particularly liked the different built-in play styles and the ability to create your own. I used to spend hours, days, even weeks creating tournaments in which I would compete against the different styles and to see if I could win those Tournaments. I guess the thought that you were competing against such famous World Champions and Grandmasters of the past was the big attraction and you could dream about your grandeur and prowess when you beat them. Styles such as Capablanca, Lasker, Marshall, Morphy, Nimzovich, Tal. What possibly more could you have wanted in a PC chess program. Those were great times and nostalgic when you think back to those times.
Anyway, MCG really played the opening badly as you can see from the above position. The above position actually was the best opportunity for MCG to stay alive and salvage something. MCG needed to develop some counter play and 32. b4! would have been the best way to achieve it or 32. Nd5 even. MCG played 32. g4? which was not very good as it made the already cramped white game worse.
FINAL POSITION
[fen]8/8/7p/8/4p1Pp/4Pp2/3k1K2/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]
So all considered this was quite an easy win for DB Chessmaster 3000.
