Excel 68000 Mach III (Fidelty)

Post by jwlp »

Hello, I bought a Fidelity Electronics Chess Set today. It is boxed and branded as Excel 68000 Mach III (Model 6094)

Could somebody give me some information on this model as I believe it to be quite valuable. eBay sold listings show one sold for £150 and a motherboard upgrade for £190!

Thanks in advance

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately it does not work with an AC adapter. I will try with batteries tomorrow. If it still does not work, I will get a professional to fix it. Perhaps a dead capacitor? Is there a wiring diagram/schematics available?

If as you say it is Model 6094, then it is not Mach3, but the weaker and
less valuable original Excel68000. Sorry to have to tell you this.

People have been known to trick people with boxes to get a better ebay sales price. The Model number on the computer should tell you what it is. You can also test it and compare it to an Excel 68000.

We all want things to work out right for you, but based on the serial
number of 6094 you gave, we fear there is a problem. As Nick says,
there are cheap box switching tricks going on all the time. Some people
are not above actually unscrewing and switching the plastic bases of the
games themselves. It might well be that the seller sold to you in good
faith, but was unknowingly duped themselves some years earlier.

I just checked. After powering up, press and hold both the NEW GAME
and OPTIONS buttons together. If it's a Mach3 (serial#6098) , it will tell you which version. Mine says "DB53". If it's a 68000 (serial#6094) nothing
will happen.
Fingers crossed regards....

Worth mentioning, another Excel 68000. Looks complete.
Be quick...

Hi guys, I was basing my model number off the box. If you look on the right hand side it is written in red Model 6094.
I will do some checks soon and hopefully it is as it should be

What they did was used the same box for both the Excel 68000 and the
later Excel Mach3. As you say, on the box it says, in red, "6094". Up the top
on the stuck-on black strip, towards the right, it says "model 6098"
Look on the back of the game itself for the model number. Even then, do
the check I mentioned in an earlier post.
