Novag pamphlet/ Valery Salov

Post by JMark »

Hi, I came across these novag pamphlets in an eBay auction listing. I have never seen them before and was curious if anyone knew anything about them. I searched the internet but could not find any reference of Salov playing a Novag machine. Mark

It seems this link is not opening, it works for me if I copy and paste, not sure how to post an image directly

You will find Salov's loss to the Novag Diamond/Sapphire in issue 054 of Selective Search Magazine, Oct/Nov 1994, p. 12. The link is here:

This is the game:

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "?"]
[White "Salov, Valery]
[Black "Novag Sapphire"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "E00"]

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 d5 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 O-O 6.O-O Nbd7 7.Qc2 c6 8.b3 b6 9.Rd1 Ba6 10.Bb2 Rc8 11.Nbd2 c5 12.Rac1 cxd4 13.Nxd4 b5 14.Qb1 bxc4 15.bxc4 Nc5 16. cxd5 Nxd5 17.N2b3 Nxb3 18.axb3 Bg5 19.Rxc8 Qxc8 20.Qa1 Rd8 21.Qa5 Bxe2 22.Re1 Ba6 23.Nxe6 fxe6 24.Bh3 Rd6 25.Ba3 Rc6 26.Bxe6+ Rxe6 27.Qxd5 Kf7 28.f4 Bf6 29. Rc1 Qd8 30.Qxd8 Bxd8 31.Bc5 Bb6 32.Bxb6 axb6 33.Rc7+ Re7 34.Rc6 Re1+ 35.Kf2 Rf1+ 36.Ke3 Rf3+ 37.Kd4 Rxb3 38.f5 Rb5 39.g4 Rb4+ 40.Ke5 Rxg4 41.Rc7+ Kf8 42.h3 Rc4 43.Ra7 Rc5+ *

Reportedly, the game was a 30-board simul. Salov should have won, but he got silly right here:

[fen]2qr2k1/p4ppp/b3p3/Q2n2b1/3N4/1P4P1/1B3PBP/4R1K1 w - - 2 23[/fen]

Salov went in for 23. Nxe6?, probably tempted by the prospect of an attack on Queen and King. He didn't see that Black had a reasonable defense, and ultimately lost another piece. This is easy for me to say, with the benefit of an engine at my side, but there you go.
