Great, then Lichess it is! Don't like that oversized chessboard but overall with all its features, it really is the best one.

Round 1 Game 6:

Saitek Master Chess - AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]3r4/p3npkp/1p2bp2/3p4/2r3PP/P1N2B2/1P2PP2/3RK1R1 w - - 0 20[/fen]

Until now Saitek Master Chess had the better opening position, but from above position onwards Master Chess gradually went down hill with a lot errors on the way to defeat. Quite disappointing really.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/4kp2/8/5b2/5P2/8/r7/3K4 w - - 0 58[/fen]

Round 1 Game 7:

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator - DB Kallisto 1.83

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2r3k1/1p4pp/p3p1r1/3pR1B1/8/1P6/P1n2PPP/2R3K1 w - - 0 28[/fen]

DB Kallisto 1.83 is ahead by a Pawn but in the above position the move 28. h4! would have regained the pawn and equalized. AT68060-32 Chess Simulator played 28. Kh1?

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/5R2/p7/3p2p1/1P2p3/7P/6rk/2r1K3 w - - 0 55[/fen]

Round 1 Game 8:

DB Rex 2.30 - DB Complete Chess System 1.17

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r2r2k1/1p3p1p/2b1pQp1/4R3/3P4/q7/P4PPP/1B2R1K1 w - - 0 29[/fen]

The above position after 28 moves looks more promising for Black. Here Rexchess should have settled for a draw through repetition by playing 29. Rxe6! Rexchess played 29. Be4, lost a pawn and really got outplayed in the end by DB Complete Chess System. Which was a bit of a surprise for me as I had considered Rexchess as one of the favorites to do well in this tournament.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/5pk1/2p1p1p1/8/6P1/4r3/1r4P1/5RK1 w - - 0 54[/fen]

Round 1 Game 9:

DB Grandmaster Active - Novag Sapphire II

RESULT: 1-0

https://lichess.org/Rs4XSbDP

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/2k3p1/1Rbp4/P4p1P/1B3P1K/7P/3Pr3/8 b - - 0 41[/fen]

Opposite colored Bishops you would have thought a draw would be quite easy to achieve. But, in the above position Sapphire II who is 2 pawns down best chance stay in this game would be to play 41. ... Rf2! Sapphire II played 42. ... Rg2 which only made its predicament worse.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6RQ/8/P1k5/5p2/3rbP1K/7P/8/8 w - - 0 53[/fen]

This was a disappointing Sapphire II game.

Round 1 Game 10:

DB Chessmaster 3000 - DB Chess Friend

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

FINAL POSITION

[fen]1Q3k2/8/6p1/8/1P4p1/8/5P1P/r2q1BK1 w - - 0 52[/fen]

This game was pretty even throughout and the draw seemed fair.

Round 1 Game 11:

DB Chessmaster 2000 - AM68060 Sargon 3

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4rrk1/p5pp/2p1p3/qp2Qp2/3P4/2n3PP/PP2BP2/K3R1R1 w - - 0 24[/fen]

AM68060 Sargon 3 sacrificed its Knight for two pawn to open up the King (VERY HUMAN LIKE!!!). DB Chessmaster 2000 didn't seem to like this although the valuation shows a slight advantage for white. Probably very wise that CM 2000 decided that a draw through 2x repetition was best.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4rrk1/p5pp/2p1p3/1p2Qp2/1q1P4/6PP/P3BP2/1K2R1R1 w - - 0 30[/fen]

Game drawn through 3x repetition of position.

Round 1 Game 12:

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 - DB Chess Fiz 0.16

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/OPfI5T6g

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4r2k/1N5p/4p3/6R1/p2b1B2/P4P2/1P2K1PP/1b6 w - - 0 41[/fen]

White is leading by two pawns but with two strong bishops black still has chances for a draw. But in the above position Chess Fiz 0.16 strangely play 41. ... Bxb2? and promptly loses one of his bishops and that settles it.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/4R3/7p/5k2/5P2/6KP/8 w - - 0 59[/fen]

Round 1 Game 13:

DB Max Rubin - AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01

RESULT: 0-1

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/5U5yPovq

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]Q4bk1/3r1ppp/P3p1r1/8/1p6/3qP3/5PPP/R3B1K1 w - - 0 34[/fen]

The game was quite horrible (very human like :P ) with lots of mistakes, especially by Max Rubin. The evaluation in this position is +11 for Black and Psion Chess misses an easy win with the move 34. ... e5 or +8 with 34. ... Rd8. Psion Chess played 34. ... b3 which was still OK but more errors followed.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]r5k1/P4ppp/4p1r1/4b3/8/4P1P1/5P1P/3RB1K1 w - - 0 43[/fen]

Amazingly, Psion Chess is up by a rook, but here Max Rubin still has a chance to draw this game with the move 43. Ba5! I just wonder how many dedicated chess computers would find 43. Ba5! in the above position? Anyway Max Rubin missed its chance for a draw and played 43. Rd7? and of course lost.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2k5/b5pp/4p1r1/5p2/5P1P/4P1P1/5B2/5K2 w - - 0 52[/fen]

Well after this game, my bet would be on Max Rubin finishing last in Division 3.

Round 1 Game 14:

DB MChess 1.06 - DB Turbo Chess

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/ZseYyzfv

FINAL POSITION

[fen]1r2k3/pp1Q3p/4B3/5p2/8/B1P4P/P4KP1/RN6 w - - 0 26[/fen]

DB Turbo Chess gets checkmated in 26 moves. Horrible, Turbo Chess will likely end up competing with Max Rubin for the bottom spot in Division 3.

Round 1 Game 15:

DB DB Siberian 2.15 - DB Psion Chess 1.01

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/P9U8maF6

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/4k1p1/8/1p2pQ2/p3K2P/3P4/1P1q4/8 w - - 0 59[/fen]

DB Psion Chess missed its moment for glory in the above position. 59. ... Qf4+ would have been great exchanging the queens, king out of position and a and b pawns forcing an uncontested win. Psion Chess missed it and played 59. ... Qe2+ which in the end resulted in a draw.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/6p1/3k4/8/K2Q3P/8/p7/1q6 w - - 0 76[/fen]

Hi Nick,

Some interesting pairings:

I'm rooting for the Millennium (best hope for the dedicateds?) to beat our Chess Friend. Can Checkmate Normal win again? And can Sargon 5 redeem itself?

Game on,

Lichess where we have recently been playing the High Performer Chess: Computer Tournament

http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic. ... &start=390

and where we will be playing the 2ND CHESS FRIENDS OF THE WORLD DCCC on Saturday, September 9th, 2017

http://www.hiarcs.net/forums/viewtopic. ... &start=120

has a pretty good game evaluator which I have been using a lot lately to see how it evaluates the games played in Spacious-Mind Swiss Chess Computer League - Division 3.

Below is an example game that was played between Millennium Chess Genius versus AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive:

https://lichess.org/Z6hy0Tfp

I was quite impressed with this game after I had run it through Lichess because of how Lichess had evaluated it which you can see below:

Image

9 average centipawn losses for both and just 3 inaccuracies for Millennium Chess Genius and only 2 for AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive. When I saw that, I thought wow this has to be quite a high quality chess computer game that I had just witnessed so I did some digging around.

Well I read somewhere that Gary Kasparov had an average centipawn loss of 13 based on Crafty. Therefore after reading that I was even more impressed with the above game! :P

Average Centipawn Loss

Here is a quoted definition that I found on the internet:

"Typically, “average centipawn loss” can be used to give an indication as to how accurately someone played in a chess game. For instance, if you make a move that drops a pawn (with no significant positional consequence), we can expect that move to have a centipawn loss of around 100 (100 centipawns = 1 pawn)."

So it evaluates every more and Stockfish "used by Lichess" compares your best move against what Stockfish considers the best possible move and evaluates your move in centipawns. With 0 being the best move and anything worse gets a centipawn score. This is supposed to allow a player to study his games and see in which areas he tends to make the most mistakes and therefore he can focus his further training in those areas of weakness. All Interesting stuff really.

This is how Lichess scores inaccuracies etc

Blunder: 300 centipawns
Mistake: 100 centipawns
Inaccuracy: 50 centipawns

And here is some further reading I found at Lichess:

Image

Image

The chart is interesting as it indicates that your chances of winning after any given move increases from 50% to 60% if you gain a 1 pawn advantage (+1 in an evaluation or 100 centipawns).

Anyway as a result of this I decided that I would map the games played in Division 3 for at least 3 rounds (maybe even for the whole tournament) to see if there is a way to predict the final rankings based on the players historical evaluations in games. So for Round 1 I created the chart below:

Performance Evaluator for Round 1

Image

The AVERAGE MISTAKE SCORE is based on this formula:

((INACCUARY*50)+(MISTAKE*100)+(BLUNDER*300))/TOTAL MOVES PLAYED

The TOTAL SCORE is an extra kink that I added where not only am I considering the average centipawn loss but also inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders to the prediction equation.

Now that I had completed this for Round 1 I now have the following final tournament placings predicted after just 1 game:

DIVISION 3 FINAL RANKINGS PREDICTOR AFTER 1 GAME

Image

So from the above table you can see that now we have 5 predictions machines :)

1) Predictor based on average mistakes
2) Predictor based on average centipawn losses
3) Predictor based on average mistakes plus average centipawn losses
4) Human Predictor for top 5 finishes = Dave C :P
5) Human involuntary predictor based on his program likes = Volodymyr :P

I am going to try and plot this throughout the rounds as I am quite curious about how many computer games are needed for each opponent before you can get a fairly accurate prediction on a Final Tournament Ranking (assuming that is possible), before a tournament even begins, so long as you have sufficient games knowledge for each contestant (before the tournament even starts) :)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2k1r3/R3P3/7p/2n1P1p1/1N4P1/1pp4P/8/3K4 w - - 0 59[/fen]

The game seemed to be a draw when in the above position DB YChess 1.09 made a big mistake with the move 59. Nd5? 59. Kc1 is the correct move here that might have ensured a draw.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/4k3/4P3/3K4/8/8/4r1p1/8 w - - 0 89[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB YChess 1.09, 60/30. (2176)
9 Inaccuracies
6 Mistakes
3 Blunders
39 Average centipawn loss

AM68060 Checkmate Nor, 30S. (2113)
6 Inaccuracies

Round 2 Game 2:

DB Kallisto 1.83 - AM68060 Chess Simulator

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/p5b1/1p6/2pPp1B1/P1P3Pp/5r1P/7K/4R3 b - - 0 35[/fen]

It's always funny in chess how the little things can end up being the ones that lose a game in the end. 35. ... Rf2+ check that Chess Simulator played is a bit a nothing move delaying the inevitable loss of the Black pawn on h4 and missing out on placing his pieces in the best possible position to make the fight a tough one for White. Probably 35. ... Rd3 or Bf8 or Kf7 would have been better.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/p7/5k2/1PpPp3/2P3Pp/7P/8/6K1 w - - 0 42[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Kallisto 1.83, 60/30. (2113)

AM68060 Chess Simulator, 30S. (2113)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/7r/1pkN1p2/3n2p1/2p3P1/R1P2P2/5K2/8 w - - 0 52[/fen]

It's another game that was decided in the endgame. Where Psion Chess 2.00 showed that it was just better than Checkmate Normal. Checkmate played 52. Nxc4? in the above position, which really was not wise considering Checkmate is already a pawn down and a good strong defense was needed. 52. Ne4! is the best move here.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/5p2/3K4/4n1k1/8/8 b - - 0 82[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

AT68060-32 Checkmate Nor, 30S. (2113)

[fen]3r2k1/p1r1qb2/4p2p/1BpnP3/P5p1/1P1Q4/3R1PPN/2R3K1 w - - 0 41[/fen]

So far in Round 2 the games have all followed a similar pattern of being pretty tight and competitive. Then at some point the small mistakes start adding up resulting in a loss. The move that was played in the above position seems pointless 41. ... Bh5? it does nothing but worsens Black's game which up to this point was even with White. The natural and correct move is 41. ... Qg5!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/P3R3/8/1P2p1pk/8/6P1/r5PK/8 w - - 0 71[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.01, 30S. (2137)

DB Grandmaster Active, 60/30. (2039)

Round 2 Game 5:

DB Complete Chess System 1.17 - DB MChess 1.06

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1k3r2/ppq1n1pr/2p1P3/2N1n1P1/3p1N2/6Q1/PPP5/1RK2R2 w - - 0 26[/fen]

This game felt a bit like the Gunfight at the OK Corral. Which perhaps is not surprising because DB Complete Chess System 1.17 decided to play a Staunton Gambit from a Dutch opening. There were mistakes made by both throughout this game. It seemed that finally a bit of normalcy was reached, but white's King has trapped his Rook. Anyway the above position looks to be pretty equal if DB Complete Chess System 1.17 were to play 26. Qe1. Well it was missed and 26. Rd1? was played. A few more mistakes followed but the game finished quite quickly after this.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]k7/3P2p1/8/pp4P1/1q1n4/K1N4r/P1P5/R7 w - - 0 47[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Complete Chess System 1.17, 30S. (2113)
9 Inaccuracies
5 Mistakes
2 Blunders
56 Average centipawn loss

DB MChess 1.06, 60/30. (2137)
10 Inaccuracies
1 Mistakes
1 Blunders
34 Average centipawn loss

Well, that is how mistakes, blunders and inaccuracies look like when an old chess program tries to play a Gambit :)

Excellent Analysis

Post by Dave C »

Hi Nick,

I enjoyed reviewing the analysis by Stockfish8 on Lichess after our recent tournament games. But I did not know the definitions and points ratings of Mistakes, Blunders, etc. Thanks for including that info. Your further use of this info for a deeper analysis is fascinating. Are you planning to update the Final Ranking Predictor chart after each round? It would be interesting to see how good a predictor the chart would become as the round's results begin to accumulate.

It was a little surprising that the highly rated Y-Chess 1.09 (ranked #4) was beaten in Rd 2 by Checkmate Normal (ranked #19). One round does not an accurate predictive database make.

I am feeling confident in my second place prediction (MCG), even at this early stage of the competition. If I get just one of five predictions correct do I still win a prize? :P

Game on...regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes of course you will win a prize :P Yes I am planning to track it through the rounds as I am just as curious about seeing if you can halfway accurately predict outcomes based on their mistakes.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/6pk/5p2/3R4/2b2KPP/8/8/8 w - - 0 69[/fen]

Well its possible that MCG could lose this game but I did not want to play another 100 moves to find out. So MCG gets a lucky draw!

A pawn down DB Siberian 2.15 started to advance his King Pawns, which really was not a good idea as he put himself into a bind. Siberian played 38. ... Ra7 in the above position which only made matters worse as it allowed AM68060 Sargon 3 to just continue to keep pushing the a-pawn forward.

DB Turbo Chess, Kaare Danielsen's program made a bad mistake by playing 26. Qb2? here. DB Turbo Chess was already under a lot of pressure and the only good move in the above position is 26. Be2. After 26. Qb2? a Checkmate is imminent after 26. ... e4! followed by f3!

[fen]rnbqkbnr/4pppp/p7/2pP4/Pp2P3/2P5/5PPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 8[/fen]

DB Max Rubin plays crazy as you can see from the above position after 7 moves. Amazingly the moves 8. ... Nf6 or 8. ... e6 would have been perfectly fine for Black. DB Max Rubin however is very weak and plays 8. ... bxc3 which set up Novag Sapphire II for an easy win.

FINAL POSITION
