Nick

Thanks again for all your hard work and it's really good to see all the old DOS chess graphics again!

I just wonder where you get all your chess time from running tournaments like this and the excellent 'Your Country Needs You' that I enjoyed participating in.

Anyway keep up the great work as its always a pleasure to read.

Bryan

Thanks for your kind words Bryan. Unfortunately I don't have as much time as I used to have, so mostly I get some games in on weekends. Typically very early in the morning.

But, you know when I look at all the work you put into your creations, I would suspect that you also put a lot of work and time into it :)

Our hobby has many guises :P

Hi Nick

I think your last sentence hits the nail on the head, that's what I like about computer chess.

Hi Bryan

Yes, the common theme is chess branching into computer chess. Everyone who likes chess can find their own particular niche of interest to pursue within that umbrella.

Excalibur Igor was ahead mostly early on and then it went all astray. In the above position it really seemed possible that Rival might actual score its first point with a win. Both 43. ... a4 and 43. ... Ra3 looked good.

Amiga Chess Player 2150 has a clear lead at the top. Atari Sargon 3 second. DOSBox Sargon 3 second from last? Despite any speed difference, clearly there is a big programming difference between Sargon 3 DOSbox and 86060 32 MHz Atari

In Round 8 Game 1 it was time for the two leaders to battle it out with Amiga 68060 Chess Player 2150 playing White against Atari 68060 32 MHz Sargon 3.

Sargon 3's opening book is a bit risky and in this game it had to fight to keep up with Amiga CP2150. However in the above position Sargon 3 got the opportunity turn the game to its advantage with the strong move 38. ... a4! Although the move it played was not so bad, 38. ... a4 was the move for success.

When all is said and done, the superior search depth that Amiga CP2150 enjoyed in this encounter was too much for Atari Sargon 3. Amiga CP2150 was quite impressive with the way it skillfully played this endgame to take the full point.

Final Position

The second game of Round 8 was also an encounter between two top contenders for the Division 4 trophy. Fidelity 68000 Mach III Master had to play against DOSBox YChess 1.09.

[fen]8/6pp/2p1kp2/1p1n4/p2P4/P1P2P2/P2B1KPP/8 w - - 0 31[/fen]

Fidelity Mach III Master enjoyed a small advantage until we reached this position which looked like a possible draw. It is from this point onwards after Mach III Master foolishly played 31. Kg3?, that YChess 1.09 took over and skillfully maneuvered his Knight and King to win the endgame easily.

Amiga CP2150's endgame search depth advantage was very visible in this game.

31. Kg3 Ne7 32. Kg4 Kd5 33. f4 Kc4 34. Kf3 Kd3 35. Be1 Nd5 36. g3 f5 37. h3 Nxc3 38. Bf2 Nxa2 39. g4 g6 40. gxf5 gxf5 41. Be3 b4 42. axb4 Nxb4 43. Bc1 Nc2 44. Kg3 Kxd4 45. Kh4 a3 46. Kg3 a2 47. Bb2+ Kd3 48. Kh4 c5 49. Kg5 c4 50. Kxf5 c3 51. Bxc3 Kxc3 52. Kg5 a1=Q 0-1

Final Position

[fen]8/7p/8/6K1/5P2/2k4P/2n5/q7 w - - 0 53[/fen]

It now seems that DOSBox YChess 1.09 could be the only opponent left that is good enough to slow down Amiga CP2150's domination in Division 4.

Grandmaster under this setting searches to a depth of 9 ply. So its quite amazing really how well Saitek Corona keeps up and keeps picking up some points. In the above position. Saitek Corona who really played well up to this point misses playing 39. Qa8+ or Qd8+ which could have been followed by 40. Qb8. This would have protected the b8 - g3 from perpetual checking and it would have been interesting to see if Saitek Corona could have advanced the b-pawn. Anyway it missed playing this and the game ended in a draw.

Novag Scorpio has been finding it tough to get going in this tournament. Here he is leading by a pawn in the endgame. I am impressed at how hard Constellation Quattro played.

[fen]2r5/P7/1k6/8/3K4/8/2p5/2R5 w - - 0 62[/fen]

Well I played the game to the bitter end and nothing doing Constellation Quattro played the ending solidly. This surprised me a bit as it is supposed to be just a slightly faster with its 4 MHz version of Constellation 3.6 with its 3.6 MHz. Well I have played plenty of games with Constellation 3.6 and Super Constellation and I can't ever remember either of them playing a tough endgame as well as Constellation Quattro just played.

Kxa7 63. Kd3 Kb6 64. Rxc2 Rxc2 65. Kxc2 1/2-1/2

Novag Scorpio is meant to be 210 ELO better than Constellation Quattro therefore this result was a great achievement.

The program that I am using to create the Swiss tournament also allows you to create quite easily some web pages for the tournament that you are running.

See link below:

http://spacious-mind.com/forum_reports/vega/index.html

I think in addition it lets you round by round create the pgn files of the games and show them as well. I have not tried that yet though.

Unbelievably Igor just played 18. ... a5?? which checkmates in 2 moves. DB Powerchess 5.3 did not even see it, but a couple of moves later it does find the checkmate to win.

Krypton Challenge makes a mistake in the above position that loses the game with the move 19. Rc2? A couple of good moves would have been either 19. exd6 or 19. Qg3.

DB Rival 1.5e who had lost every single game in this tournament so far, amazingly leads by a Pawn. The above position might have been the best opportunity for Rival 1.5e with the move 51. Rc1 that would have threatened Rc6! But the position was difficult and of course Rival 1.5e was not able to see this.
