Hi
the Fidelity kishon is coming from the chesster challenger.
i opened one kishon and dumped the ROM.
and i have also a chesster challenger.
does somebody knows why fidelity made kishon slower than chesster.
i explain:
in chesster the CPU is running at 5 Mhz
in kishon, with same pcb and same components, the clock rate is at only 3.58 Mhz.
why did Fidelity (volontary?) reduced the speed ?
i know there is also a mephisto kishon.
does somebody opened it to see at which speed is the CPU crystal and which is the reference of the PCB
chesster/kishon PCB reference is : 510.1141C01 from 1989.
regards.
fidelity kishon

Let me guess: Fidelity was a business as any other and so it was always looking at how to put down costs. So perhaps they had the opportunity to diminish cost with a stock of slower, obsolete but then cheaper CPU. Who cares? Not everybody disembowel these contrivances to examine the specs.

Exactly
absolutely no interest in this sort of thing personally
but i guess some do find these discussions valuable

The richness of this places lie precisely in the coexistence of technically minded people and raw buffoons as us...Steve B wrote:Fernando wrote:

Also, there is the threat of lost sales of more expensive wooden machinesFernando wrote:

that were being produced at the same time. Can't have the budget plastic
machine performing equally alongside the flashy wooden one.
That might not be the case
here but there are a number of reasons for limiting strength.

Re: fidelity kishon
I remember having read something about those two being based on different machines over at schachcomputer.info for some time ago. I went over that info again. It seems that Fidelity Chesster Challenger is based on the Fidelity Designer 2100 and the Fidelity Kishon Chesster on the Fidelity Designer 2000. That could perhaps explain the difference in speed between those two? One had the frequency dropped by one MHz and the other gained 0,6 MHz. Probably cost-related choices of that time.yoyo_chessboard wrote:Hi
