Why does it take so long to make a move?

I have version 1.7 running on a July 2013 MacBook air. I have HCE set at a rating of 1425. I find it often takes a long time for HCE to make a move (10 or 15 mins). I can see it analyzing various moves and know I can force it to move. However if I force it to move before it is finished thinking I presume it will not make its best move.

Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Can I speed it up?

The time the computer takes depends on the time you set in the play game dialog. It sounds like you have set a very long time control or time per move setting.

You can adjust that to a time of your choosing or turn off time controls and the computer will respond immediately.

I had it set for 40 moves in 120 mins and have decreased it now. Much better. Thanks.
