White Kan Novelty

Post by klute »

turbojuice1122 - is the novelty you're thinking of this?

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 5.c4 Nf6 6.Nc3 Bb4 7.Bd3 Nc6 8.O-O!?

If so I don't think it's anything to fear assuming we might get to this position, it could result in Black winning a pawn with some positional compensation for White - and isn't this the sort of thing 1...c5 people dream of?

I don't think our computer opponent would have 8.O-O in its book and though I think it's probably sound for White, I also think it's probably not unsound for Black.

We might even be able to contribute to the theory of this line (if we got to it - there are many ways a Kan can go).

No; I'll mention something if the Hiarcs team heads into it, which is quite possible. If so, so much the better--but it would unfortunately cause me to lose a very great weapon for a future Freestyle tournament. Anyway, there is nothing to fear from the c4 variations, either.
