11.2 time loses

Post by BigBen »

Hi,
I have been trying to run some blitz tournaments with multiple engines and am finding that HIARCS 11.2 has been loseing games on time ... If I run just 2 engines (rather than 7 or 8) then there are no problems with time ... Below are all loses on time ...

Hi,

Please take any issues up by emailing Hiarcs Support as this is not a general forum question and direct emails are much quicker for me to respond to and track.

I have had 11.2 on test here for a long time on many machines and have seen no time losses.

I have noticed the depth search is EXTREMELY low, only 5 ply or lower in some cases, which would be reached in milliseconds or less. Do you have some other very CPU intensive application running on your machine?

Example in Glaurung game: 11.Qe4 1.10/5 23 that is 23 seconds to reach 5 ply so H is not getting much CPU because that depth would be reached in about 1/1000th of second.

I also see Glaurung is also not searching deeply either Be6 (Bg4) 0.13/9 35 is very low for it.

Perhaps another engine or application is using your CPU 100% and Hiarcs and other engines cannot get access to the CPU to run. Please check the Task Manager to see if this is the case. Please also check you have activated HIARCS.

If you still have problems...

Can you send me the autosave file which is located in the same folder as the Hiarcs engine so I can try and diagnose what has happened here.

What GUI type and version are you using?

What time control is being used?

Are GUI books, own engine book or set openings being used?

Are any other engines losing on time?

What OS and hardware are you using?

When you say run 2 engines instead of 7 engines what do you mean exactly?

You can send your autosave file to me using the email button.

Best wishes,
Mark

Hi Mark,
No other intensive progs running .... The tournament was running through the Fritz 10 GUI on Vista Ultimate 64 bit OS ....

When running just the 2 engine tournament it was simply Rybka 2.3.2a Vs HIARCS 11.2 ..... No opening book was being used just a position setup from a suggestion of John Watson in his book `mastering the chess openings`in which I was trying some off beat ideas against the Petroff

I just checked some of the other games and indeed it is only HIARCS with low ply except for that game against Glaurung which was suffering the same glitch, in all its other games the ply search was fine ...

The tournament was being run on a basic air cooled intel quad at 2.8Ghz on the P35C chipset .... I will try the same tournament on my main Quad at 4Ghz +P35C chipset and see what happens ...

It might be a possability that on the air cooled machine now that today the summer seems to have arrived that the BIOS thermal monitor kicked in (I forgot to turn it off) which automatically drops the voltage and frequency because of over heating which may explain the low ply????? (although I doubt it would drop that low) but not the loss on time

I've also had the odd time loss when playing on the Playchess server with 11.1 and 11.2 mp engines. It has only ever happened in fixed time blitz games 3 or 5 minutes per side. However, I cannot recall an instance when Hiarcs was winning although in the last game I used 11.2 mp on the Playchess server this happened when i thought it was going to pull a draw out of the mouth of defeat.

Tony
The only explanation I can think of is some other application is hogging the CPU or like you said your CPU was significantly throttled due to overheating.

The fact it affected both Hiarcs and Glaurang in that last game points to something slowing everything down.

Are you running full ponder on these games or do you have permanent brain turned off?

Also how many cores is Hiarcs and the other MP programs using in the tourny?

I have played thosands of engine-engine games at sudden death blitz without any time losses.

Please respond to my email with the autosave pgn file and answers to the questions I will investigate.

Peter, if you play on the server with sudden death blitz or bullet time controls it is worth switching the GUI lag engine option ON to try to compensate for the extra delays due to the GUI and the communication lag.

Mark,
I'm afraid the guys are right. I've had Hiarcs see lose on time from version 11 very often. I think it's definately a bug in the engine. I always run at least 40/15, 40/15 rest in 15 minute engine-engine games and often use Arena 1.99b4 GUI. I own a Core2duo E6600 currently and use the Hiarcs 11.1 or 11.2 SP version currently without running cpu intensive programs. I also had it happen with an older P4 3,0 ghz computer. Hiarcs 11 was only engine losing on time in engine vs engine matches btw.

There was an issue with Hiarcs 11 with time usage which was affected by the copy protection threading. This was resolved in Hiarcs 11.1 although some of the protection issues affected a small batch initially downloaded.

That was part of the reason for completely removing that protection mechanism and replacing it with the flexible one in Hiarcs 11.2.

If you have a time loss with 11.2 please email me with it and I will look at it.

Peter's case of a blitz time loss after 150 moves in a server game when there is comms lags I can understand and for this I recommend the GUI lag option which will avoid this.

Where as I believe the problems reported by BigBen are caused outside of the program because they affected Glaurung and Hiarcs and the depth reached was so low (3 or 5 ply at times) it is obvious the engine was not getting many CPU cycles.

I have had no reports from the major testers in CCRL and CEGT of any time losses and they play thousands of games.

Thanks for advice Mark, ran a 90 game session on the Playchess server today and no issues. In fact overall time handling seemed better and finished with a good run to close 110 Elo up on start of the day!

Thanks for that Peter, I am glad it did so well on the server today.

I also had two machines running on this since last night and they played 692 games of 1 min bullet (blitz) chess with Hiarcs 11.2 SP under the Fritz 10 GUI.

There were no time losses for Hiarcs 11.2 SP. Also none of my beta testers on 11.2 reported any issue and the CEGT/CCRL have not reported any problems with time so I conclude HIARCS 11.2 is ok.

Hi,
Sorry for slow reply .... I found the problem at least on this machine (the quad at 2.8Ghz) it was indeed to do with the BIOS .... When I turned off anything to do with Intels speed-step (EIST) or any throttling options the problem vanished.

Mark I have sent you the autosave PGN and the tournament itself in case it is of any use

Regards
Tony
