Congrats to Hiarcs team for the second place!

As it seems the opening in the direct encounter decided the WC...
(Well, not exactly: to win with the black pieces was a too big task anyway. But the opening was sub-optimal...)

A BIG THANK YOU to the HIARCS TEAM!

Harvey Williamson wrote:So Hiarcs will be 2nd with 7/9 a very good result beaten only by the 40 cores of Rybka.

I will write more later.
A big thank you to the people who made this result possible...

Harvey Williamson who operated and coordinated everything including enabling the WCCC to happen with his MacBook router ;-)
Harvey has also worked tirelessly testing versions, improving the book, procuring the use of fast h/w and answering so many Hiarcs forum posts.

Sebastian Böhme for his excellent book preparations which worked very well in most games - with a little more luck we might have done even better. I am sure we still have a few surprises for our future opponents.

Rob Osborne for helping us in testing, allowing us to use his fast 8 core machine and of course broadcasting the Hiarcs games on playchess.

Of course behind the scenes there are a number of other people who have helped us including Eric, Christian, Andre and of course Enrico. Sorry if I forgot anyone.

I know as a team we will draw strength and knowledge from this experience and I am sure we are determined to come back much stronger next time.

So near, yet so far, until next time,
Mark

It seems that the opening preparation against Rybka was not optimal to say the least. Will there be some post game comments?

Impressive Hiarcs's game with only 8 Cores and 32 bits, Hiarcs is a haughty program and is the morality winner of the tilt.

Congratulations to the whole equipment(team) and especially for his excellent engine , the near time was winning the genius of Mark

¡¡ Congratulations!!

Diary day 8

Post by Hans van der Zijden »

Saturday 4 oct:
Worldanimalday. Be nice to little fish (Rybka). Now that I used the laundryservice, it seems that everybody got a knock on their door before 9:00, asking if there is something for the laundry. That will be fun tomorrowmorning. Some of the operators will probably get drunk. Not me though. I don't drink. I had a good preparation to make Rybka feel more at ease. I grew a 7-day old beard to look more like Vasik. Ok, I should also lose 40-50 kilo's and have a beautiful girlfriend by my side. Furthermore I don't eat little fish. Hiarcs is quite nice by playing a bad openingline and Rybka has used only 25 minutes before Harvey resigns. That is the problem as a Rybka operator' you always have to wait so long for the next round. David Levy announces that lunch is on the ICGA. Damn, I wanted to skip lunch. So fruitplatter it is. With one round to go Rybka is already champion. Which is good, because Junior, opponent in the last round, is not so nice for animals. Junior gets a very good position, but doesn't see how to proceed. Then Rybka surprises with a rook sacrafice. The evaluation is 0.00 and with such a big material disadvantage and a mate in 1 threat, that can only mean one thing: perpetual check. Junior says +3.59 for 20 moves and doesn't see it. Hiarcs and shredder are also analyzing the position and they agree with Rybka. The rest of the evening nothing much happened, only a waitress forgetting to bring my coke.
Never do something today, that someone else can do tomorrow. (Confusedius)

Congratulations to the Hiarcs team that now have established itself the main contender to Rybka. It was a pity that the Rybka-Hiarcs game was mainly decided in the opening before the engine really had a chance to show its strength.

I notice that there only are two zeros out of the 45 entries over the diagonal in the final table. I think that the final outcome reflect the current ranking well even though the final result obviously could have been different had Hiarcs run on 40 cores instead of 8.

On the Rybka forum

Vas suggested that this extra hardware advantage gave Rybka an additional 100 rating which obviously is crucial at the top level.

Yes, my congratulations goes to both teams, too. I imagine that Harvey must be pretty tired, too, with jet lag going both ways.

I think that the 100 elo difference that Vas mentions is only valid in Rybka 3 vs. Rybka 3 competition--it would seem more reasonable that the difference over other programs would be more like 50 elo or less. Of course, there could have very easily been the result that it would be much worse than on a Skulltrail, with a result similar to the 2006 WCCC.

Anyway, perhaps these performances will get Hiarcs an invitation to the Fischer-Random computer "championships"...
