Fritz for Nintendo DS versus Mephisto Roma 32 bit emulation

Post by Monsieur Plastique »

Hi,

After completing a series of 30 tournament games with the newly released Fritz for Nintendo DS consoles, it emerged with a rating of 2047 ELO scaled as per the "old" SSDF listing. This meant that it is very close in strength to the Mephisto Roma 32 bit dedicated computer from the late 1980s.

Since Fritz for Nintendo DS needed a huge amount of post-purchase testing by me in order to find the correct level parameter settings to get it actually play proper chess  I decided to do some final testing of my average minute per move against a large number of programs, including Mephisto MMIV, MMV, Dallas 16 bit and Roma 32 bit via the excellent MESS emulation (which actually seem to run faster than the original machines did based on problem solving times...).

Anyway, here is a nice game between Mephisto Roma 32 bit as white against Fritz Nintendo DS, with both programs configured for an average of one minute per move (level LE45 on the Roma 32 bit). It was a very exciting game, perhaps not surprising given that these two programs are very evenly matched. Fritz, however, was able to consolidate on a hard-earned superior position and finally pushed the pawn through in the closing stages of the endgame.
