Round Two, Match 2

Post by TracySMiller »

The second match features #2 seed Defenchess 2.2 vs. #7 seed Millennium King Performance. Best of 8.

Game one featured a wild, complicated Queen+minor piece battle, with Defenchess up one pawn. Defenchess gave a multitude of checks with its Queen, moving the Queen almost 50% of the moves in the game. It somehow avoided the 3-fold repetition of position, and eventually figured out how to get the win.

Defenchess leads the match 1-0.

Defenchess 2.2 plays more aggressively in game two, with a temporary Nxf7 sacrifice to open up the King's position. It would use this to great effect as it invaded with its Queen and two Bishops to pick up the win, and now leads the match 2-0.

M-Chess 8 held its own in a complicated middle game until DGT Centaur formed a passed pawn and pushed it. Then we get to see 2 Queens vs 1 Queen for a while, which was exciting. DGT Centaur leads the match 2-0.

A complicated endgame sees DGT Centaur get the better of M-Chess 8, at one point boldly letting M-Chess promote its pawn. Check out the beautiful 45...d5!, opening up a file for its Rook. M-Chess resigned after Black's 73rd move. DGT Centaur takes a commanding 3-0 lead in the match.

This game may be my favorite in the entire tournament. A brutal Kingside assault that Tal would be proud of, DGT Centaur rips open the King position, including the pretty 29. Nxf6! sacrifice offer. After White's 33rd move, M-Chess 8 couldn't stand the attack any longer and threw in the towel. DGT Centaur leads the match 4-0, and is just one win or draw away from advancing to the Semifinals.

M-Chess 8 fights tough for the first 40 or so moves, but eventually falls prey to DGT Centaur's superior endgame skills. Starting at move 59, look how skillfully the Centaur evades White's checks, including a pivotal Knight sacrifice to clear an escape path for its King! DGT Centaur thus wins the match 5-0 and advances to the Semifinals.

A tough game where it seemed Rebel 12 held an advantage as late as move 39, but seemed to play inaccurately and Chessmaster escapes with a draw. Chessmaster leads the match 3.5-1.5, and is now one win away from advancing to the Semi-Finals.
