Error Player Explorer Hiarcs Chess Explorer 1.2.1

Post by Ladyhawk »

If I click on the name of the white opening Philidor Defence. None of the 3 games are listed.
The eco codes are set with SCID.
I have made a video capture about it:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JOM6tH ... sp=sharing

If I set the eco codes with Hiarcs I don't get this problem. But I would like to be able to set the eco codes with other software to, and use the Player Explorer without these errors.

Can you send us a sample database illustrating the problem?

The source of the problem can be found in the SCID documentation:

"Scid Extensions to ECO
The ECO system is however fairly limited, and insufficient for modern games. Some codes are never used, while others are overly frequent. To improve this, Scid allows an optional extension to the basic ECO codes. Codes may be extended with a letter from a to z, with a further extension - a digit from 1 to 4 - being possible but not yet used. So an extended code may look like A41e or E99b2. Many of the codes common in modern master-level games have extensions defined in the Scid ECO file.
"

This kind of defeats one of the purposes of PGN files, which should follow the official standard and be easily readable by any software. Mixing in own inventions in an established format is doomed to break functionality in other software. If you actually rely on the extended codes for something, you have locked yourself in with SCID.

Being aware of the problem i believe the HIARCS programmers can fix this easily, as they have done with other deviations from the standard. They may even implement it, but it's a rather fringe functionality.

You may also check with SCID's settings to see if there's an option to export more universal PGNs.

Yes, Scid used non-standard ECO codes. If you want to keep them, then HCE cannot rely upon standard ECO codes for displaying openings.
I think you should allow HCE to override ECO codes – if you need Scid ECO codes anytime, you can import PGN back to Scid.
