Tablebases - Generating them vs Downloading
I read that it is possible to generate tablebases, is this a better option than downloading them ?

If you have a 64-bit system and lots of memory.

4-men tablebases are together 30 MB only. Easy download. (20...30 Elo)
Switching to 5-men (7.5 GB) gives only an extra 10...15 Elo.
6-men are not worth the terabytes space they occupy.
For strong engines, take lower end of mentioned Elo ranges.
For weak engines, take upper end of mentioned Elo ranges.
I use 4-men.
Matthias.

The most important 6-man TB's are not anywhere near a terabyte in size. You can fit key 6man's into 25-50gb on your harddrive, I think the 12DVD version of the Gold Nalimov's takes up 100gb of space on your Hard drive.Matthias Gemuh wrote: 6-men are not worth the terabytes space they occupy.

it is better surely downloading them, rather than to produced them.Dark Horse wrote:I read that it is possible to generate tablebases, is this a better option than downloading them ?
Exclusively for a matter of time.
You have to know that to produce the tablebase 5men KRPKRs, I have employed 7/8 h, with a Core2duo and 1 Gb ram, XP 64 bit.
When I had only the Pentium 4 HT and 512Mb of ram, XP 32 bit, have employed 2 days!
When I had only Celeron and 256Mb have employed 8 days!!
Download it in a few minutes. Nobody could otherwise recommend you
Online
How about keeping the tables at some large server, and download only the moves for the current position?
After all, once you are in an endgametable position, you don't need to search very much, so 0,3s downloading moves won't be so bad?
