a draw against a 2400 rated opponent will go a long way to lift your spirits
load up your MCGE with the Gambit book
5 min blitz
take the black pieces and let it play the Sicilian Wing Gambit

This beast is not infallible after all! I tried stepping back to move 7, set a longer time control and it still plays for the draw! I guess it just can't see far enough ahead....
Maybe I'm obsessed or mad or both! I left my MCGE running from move 10 of Steve's game for 1 1/2 days to see if it would change it's evaluation of the position. It's currently looking 14 ply ahead, considering move 3 of 38. The best move so far is still playing for the draw with NC3B5 !?
I guess this is just one of those positions that the current ChessGenius engine is not so good with. I wonder if the update with selectable styles of play will fair any better?

Excellent!
so now I can take credit for drawing with an even higher rated player!
lets see...at 40/2 it will probably be rated about 2400
at correspondence chess(1.5 days to move) it would probably be rated 2600+
which means that I am now approaching ....

That's a nice thought. How about playing a 10 game match against it at 40/2? However, I think you should select the Champion Book for this, otherwise you may get it to play the same opening for each game

This time when getting the MCGE to play for white it avoids the draw!? On 40/2 setting the MCGE comes up with Ba3b2 with a score of -0.20.
Curious Regards

Interesting... but I imagine that its probably not very unusual for dedicated computers to choose a different move ..from a set up position.. then from a game they are in the middle of playing..(assuming both moves are close to the same evaluation..)
what is curious here is that even after 1.5 days of pondering the MCGE chooses the early draw
Perhaps(upon deep reflection) the MCGE was happy to get away with a draw from me and relieved to cease hostilities

Yes, I can see that but in this case it seems to be a fixed evaluation of 0.00 compared to another moving evaluation. Of course, given enough time it may decide to make the drawing move once again, but this is a very odd choice considering that it's so early in the game with so many possibilities.

I think this is the only logical explanation!

Tried this out with the new C23.1 MCGE Program
tried it on Solid and Normal modes
computer still goes for the early draw
as this program seems to be a bit stronger(from early testing)
it now seems i can draw against even stiffer competition

It's a pity the update has not improved its play in this game, but whatever increase in ELO the update has given does mean that you are that much stronger without even trying

MCGE will declare the game a draw if it exceeds 220 full moves because it cannot and will not continue further

Steve
That's a good find in the manual and probably a reasonable thing for the MCGE to do. Most games by more experienced players wont be that long unless they adopt your cunning plan!

Back to the original question on this thread - does Millennium Exclusive actually store the settings? I just received mine, and every time I unplug it, when I plug it back in I have to re-select my language, and turn off sound.
Not sure I want to keep this if it can't retain basic settings.
