Novag Diamond (?)

Hi all, have something to ask about this unit: Wiki says that its 8-bit, but feels more like 16-bit because of ELO ~2150; also could it be powered from batteries? Its for sale in Moscow around 175 euro (new, unused), is it a reasonable price for? Thanks!

the Diamond I/Sapphire I as well as the Diamond II/Sapphire II all ran on the H8 Risc Stlye Processor so i dont think you can compare to a computer running on a 65CO2 8 bit processor
The Diamonds will NOT run on Batteries but the portable Sapphires will
i think 175 Euro is a reasonable price for a new Diamond I in box with manual, pieces ..etc etc

RS 2250 and Zircon II are H8-processor devices too; both not much stronger than 65c02 computers (depends of playing styles for different pairs of opponents). I read in manual that its possible to switch OFF Hash Tables on Diamond, so disabling this hardware advantage can make test games more fair to play. The only bad thing is an LCD - does NOT show human's clock

yes, this info comes from Hitachi:

Hitachi - H8/300 8-bit Devices

Novag Diamond = HD6433258

I have to correct you slightly, Steve. The Diamond will not run on
batteries, but the Diamond2 and Star Diamond both have a battery bay.
I agree that 175 Euro for a new Diamond is a good price.

How can it keep programmable library moves and learned position evaluations without batteries? There must be a special CMOS-battery for it, right?

Yes, must be. This is why a lot of Novag Super Constellations no longer
work. The CMOS battery eventually starts leaking over the mainboard.
At least that's been my experience.

Can somebody tell the difference in playing style between Diamond and Diamond II / Star Diamond? I had read somewhere that D. has a human-like one and DII/SD are more in a PC-engines way...
