Match Revelation 4.0.3 Shredder 12 - Stockfish 2.2.2 Android

Post by fdimeglio »

Hello,

Since a while, I was wondering how Stockfish on Android could do against one of the strongest dedicated machine, the Phoenix Revelation 4.0.3 Shredder 12 modules used into a Munchen board.

So I decided today to play a few games between Stockfish 2.2.2 on a basic Nexus S running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and the Revelation.

For the technically inclined, the Revelation is based on an Xscale Intel processor running a 500Mhz and with 32Mb of RAM. The Nexus S is a 1Ghz ARM Cortex A8 device with 512Mb of RAM and can be considered as a "normal phone" those days (no more high end as it is already 1.5y old).

I have selected a 5min blitz cadence for this little match.

Here are the two first games:

[Black "Stockfish 2.2.2 Android Nexus S"]
[Result "0-1"]

In this first game, the Revelation was considering that he was a little bit ahead in the middle game and then his position started to degrade gradually to a point where it was no more sustainable after Stockfish got a total control of the center.

In this second game, Stockfish was out of book very early and Revelation was in book for a while. As in the first game, Revelation was considering the position to be equal but then Stockfish was starting to be a bit ahead by controlling again the center. Revelation found some great resources in that game and blocked Stockfish attack and launched a decisive counter attack that totally crushed Stockfish.

Quite enjoyable up to now ;-)

Very interesting. Glad to see the Revelation came out ahead in match #2. It's hard to get one's arms around the fact that an Android phone app can beat the 'take-a-second-mortgage-on-the-house-to buy' Revelation. But then that's one reason why big-board sales went into the dumper in the first place.

My "not so far away" dream setup would be a DGT bluetooth board connected to a tablet device (whatever the brand). Funnily it will be very similar to a TASC R30 isnt it ? ;-)

Similar yes but not exactly
the Tablet device can do other meaningless tasc's other then play chess
while the R30 only played chess.in those days manufacturer's had their priorities in order

in a way i am rooting for the new fangled mobile gadgets to surpass the PC engines in chess strength
its sort of like rooting for the team that is now facing the team that knocked your team out of the playoffs

anyway...every so often a dedicated computer wins a game from the current technological beast of the day

years ago(around 2004-6) i played a 3 game match R40 against the newest hand-held technology of the day
the match ended 1.5-1.5
the games were played online and posted on the CCC
another CCC member operated the mobile device
sadly i cant find them now
however here is an example from 2001:

I decided today to do some 15min games to see how the two contenders are doing with a bit more time.

It was not a great day for the Revelation: the first was a draw by repetition and the second was a bloody one.
