London EPROM'S to upgrade Mephisto chess computers.

Post by Bryan Whitby »

Most MEPHISTO modules and chess computers that contain Richard Lang programs can be upgraded to the 1994 "London" version..
Richard can supply London EPROM's for the following machines:

Most Almeria, Lyon, Portorose and Vancouver 68000 (16 bit) modules. See FAQ below.
Almeria, Lyon, Portorose and Vancouver 68020 (32 bit) modules.
68030 Genius modules.
The Mephisto Berlin and Berlin Professional chess computers.
Most tournament 68030 machines. Please contact richard@chessgenius.com with details of your machine before ordering.
The price is Euro 32 including airmail delivery within Europe.

Good to know this Bryan Thanks

i have been searching for a London 68000 module to add to my collection for a very long time
in fact..it is the only Mephisto module i dont own and i also have all of the other London Incarnations( 020,030,Berlins ,TM Machine...Etc.Etc.)
the dilemma for me with just buying the London Eprom is i dont have an extra 68k module to "give up" to gain the London 68k module
i realize i could just swap Eproms but i want to add the London 68k to my collection ..not in place of another Mephisto 68k
i dont want to close one hole in the collection only to open up another hole

there is a current Ebay Auction fo an Exclusive London 68k where the "Buy Now" Price is over $700
too much to pay for the London Module as i dont need yet another Exclusive board

now at least i can keep my eyes peeled for a reasonably priced Mephisto 68k module and then get the Eprom from Lang

Between a Rock and a Hard Place Regards

Great info Bryan, thanks. Now I can upgrade my 32 bit Portorose
to a London. From my experience, the London does not seem to increase
playing strength on the fast time controls, but it must at slower time
control. Look to the Wiki elo list and note the Berlin Pro (non London)
is 30 or so elo ahead of the Berlin Pro London at Active (30sec/move
or 30min/game).
nice day all...

Hello Steve,

If this is the London you are talking about:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEPHISTO-LONDON ... 521wt_1234

this machine is a quite poor state....and not worth its price isnt it ?

That was the one Fabrice
and i see it is now gone..sold
i dont think its worth that price but wooden chess computers are selling like wild fire recently
even small wooden boards are attracting high prices..
http://www.ebay.de/itm/MEPHISTO-ACADEMY ... 0988686468
perhaps this wood feeding frenzy only applies to wood taken from the Fidelity, Novag or Mephisto Trees?
lets test the waters..i mean..wood..
i will start small
i will put up a Saitek ..Perhaps an Astral(1986)-Virtuoso(1992) or Capella(1998).. small boards but made of Wood.
if that sells well i will bump up the size to the Stratos-Corona level
and from there to the President and beyond...
My Corona Regards

I know this is an old thread, but I just recently got aware of it. Was it ever released an London Module? I think not. So far as I remember it was only released as an upgrade to exsisting modules.

Hi Erik
well the London program was not released by Mephisto
so you are correct
it was released by Lang himself as an eprom upgrade and then sold by Distributors who either upgraded the owners computer
OR
as a new computer(Dealers would upgrade their already existing stock of Mephisto computers)
so there was never a module or computer with a "London" Labeling released by Mephisto the Company

Interestingly..Lang's web site mentions the "1994" London Upgrade
not sure if that is a typo or a reference to his Genius PC Engine
AFAIK the upgrade for dedicated chess computers was released in 1996

here is the start-up screen for my TM London:
