Fidelity Super '9'

This is quite possibly the only Fidelity Super 9 in Australia! And it
will eventually leave the country when I sell it. We are not a chess
playing nation, and when chess comps were in their heyday a *lot*
of models were simply not imported for sale here. There was more or
less only one chess comp retailer, and he had not even heard of a lot
of the models I mentioned in conversation.
I came across this unit about six months ago, and am very pleased
with it. It starts by pointing out to me that I can't speak Spanish, and
like any Latino, hates losing
I noticed it has the same playing mat as the Fidelity SC9, and the year
of manufacture matches also. With this in mind, I set up the following
position:
[fen]5k2/8/5K2/5R2/8/8/8/8[/fen]
Super9 takes a full minute to solve this simple mate in 3, which starts
with *any* rook move. I know from memory that the humble Fidelity SC9
also takes around the same time, even though the SC9 runs at about
half the clock speed that the Super9 runs at. Surely this has to almost
be regarded as a 'bug' in the program, no? I also noticed a weakness
in the c3 Sicilian that is shared by SC9 and Super9. The two machines
have a different opening book, but otherwise the same source code, it
seems.
If you happen across a Super9, grab it. It was a small production run,
no wonder when you look at it. Looks like Homer Simpson designed it.
regards to all,
Larry

Why on earth would you sell it if it is the only one you own??

No, no, Steve, perhaps a bit of bad wording on my part. By 'eventually',
it was my own mortality I had in mind. No need for chess comps in the
cemetery, no place to plug them in. :( I personally won't sell it until
I'm on my last legs. If I die suddenly, my widow will sell it so she can
go to the hairdresser.
