Collector's Corner... On The Mephisto Excalibur

Post by Steve B »

The Mephisto Excalibur is well known among collectors worldwide
A rare and historical Chess Computer.. it was the very first dedicated computer to utilize the Motorola 68K Processor..legend has it that no more then 25 were sold

The Chess Computer Wiki has an excellent article on it here:

http://www.schach-computer.info/wiki/in ... _Excalibur

Not so well known however is the actual strength of the Excalibur
The Wiki shows an estimated ELO of 1610 with a Colditz position testing rating of 1798

In Order to get a feeling for the Excalibur's rating ..in the coming weeks (on a haphazard basis )i will conduct a 10 game match Vs. the Novag VIP which sports a Selective Search rating of 1631

Match terms will be the same as the matches i conducted with the Revelation Hiarcs 13.3,and Mephisto Wunder Machine

1 Min/Avg Time Control
Colours Reversing
each Computer forced to open with ...e4,d4,c4,Nf3,Nc3

In The First Game
Excalibur is out of book on move 4
at 1 minute per move the VIP hits about 5 ply and Excalibur around 3-4 ply
Excalibur losses a P early and then does not anticipate the VIP's
18th move which moved its Q into a nest of White p's
(ala Marshall's "Immortal" game)
Excalibur's position fell apart soon after

Game 2
VIP is out of book on move 3
the game is fairly even until move 32 when the Excalibur gets lost
in the tactical possibilities and loses the exchange
in addition the VIP creates a passed "h' P which marches its way to promotion..
faced with the loss of even more material to prevent the p from promotion the Excalibur resigned
i am getting a strong feeling that due to Excalibur's very limited brute force searching...
a contest at only 1 Min per move might not be a fair indication of its strength

Where are the SSDF guys and their 40/2 matches when we need them i ask you?

Game 3
Ex opens with Nf3
Just when i was ready to abort the match Excalibur comes roaring back
actually this is a book win due to the fact that the VIP was out of
book on the second move while Ex was in book until move 8
the resulting position for VIP was already lost and Ex wins the Exchange and a P right from the getgo
Ex must have been savoring the fact it was winning because it found the slowest and longest way to win ..
shifting its K from f2-e3-e2 in a bizarre triangulation maneuver.. several times.. just to prolong the VIP's agony
eventually it got bored of this Celebratory "Dance Of Death" and went in for the road kill

Game 4
VIP's turn to open with Nf3 and it is out of book on move 3
Both computers play reasonably out of the opening and a
drawn position is reached by move 40 with the VIP having a B for a N
At move 50 the Ex manages to blunder away a P and by move 60 it has
a theoretically lost game
the win however entails creating a passed P on the K side which
sadly is outside of the VIP's limited search horizon at 1 Min per move
this results in the VIP shuffling its B back and forth aimlessly along the
A1-H8 diagonal until finally at move 77 it actually manages
to lose the game by allowing the Ex to advance its "d" pawn to promotion
not a pretty endgame for either computer and it was just a matter of which
computer would blunder last

Game 5
Ex is out of book on move 3
By move 20 VIP achieves the unusual material advantage of R+2P vs B+N
Ex manages to win back a P and a drawn position is reached
this time however it is the Ex that cannot properly handle an advancing passed P and winds up losing a N in the process
VIP goes on to win by finding the slowest possible path to victory(Probably as payback for the 3rd game)

Steve, I've been following it also. It's an interesting match because it seems that both boards are dealing with a relatively limited book and which one wins particularly depends on which one handles things better when it's out-of-book (which obviously occurs very quickly in each match).

Not to mention that I feel sympathy for both units being someone who is often out-of-book by the 4-8th move! :D

Out of book?

Post by Reinfeld »

Interesting match so far. I assume "out of book" means the machine ceases to respond instantly - a fair measure. However, in game one, Excalibur's fourth move is still straight book, even if it started thinking. I suspect the VIP's fourth was too obscure (down in the columns) at the time.

I've always been obsessed with trying to figure out WHICH books were loaded onto these devices, especially in primitive computer days. In the 80s, for instance, one assumes a combination of popular manuals (BCO, MCO) and ECO sidelines. What kind of labor did it take - physically - to enter these moves into the systems?

Game 6
VIP is out of book on move 6
both computers play evenly until move 40 when
the VIP allows the Ex to begin weaving a mating net around its K
it survives being mated but loses the exchange in the process
Ex plays the position well achieving an EGTB win at move 60
with a R+P vs N+P
at this point i loaded up a 6 man EGTB website and followed along to see how
the two computers fared accordingly to the table base
VIP managed to find moves prolonging the loss for as long as possible but
Excalibur rarely ever chose the quickest move to win
eventually after another 25 moves it slogged it way to victory

Hi Dave and R
glad you guys are following the match

R...Yes Out Of Book means that the computer is out of its pre-programmed book moves and now thinking on its own
many times the computers do of course find theory/book moves on their own but this eats up time on their clock
so as in game 3 ..IF one computer is in book for 10 moves while the other has to start thinking by move 4 then this is a big advantage in time to the "in book" computer

this is one reason that i dont like to hold matches using a Time Control of "Game in X minutes"
it basically gives a significant advantage to the computer with the larger book
this sort of thing is diminished a bit when using an Average time per move control ..although not completely
personally i am not a big fan of "Book wins" and i hold these matches forcing the computers to play a wide variety of openings ..again to avoid the better booked computer from having a large advantage

Game 7
VIP is out of book on move 4
Excalibur was in book through move 9
unlike game 3 where the EX was in book long after the VIP was out.. and had a won game coming out of book ..
here the only disadvantage out of the opening for black was its isolated QP
This game features an alarming example of triple blindness
on move 21. VIP hangs a N which can be taken for nothing due to back rank mate weaknesses..
Ex however completely misses it deciding instead to push a P
On the next move VIP has a chance to correct the blunder but again is oblivious
to the danger and leaves the N for the taking
finally by this time Ex sees the free gift and swallows the War Horse
a flurry of exchanges follow and Excalibur brings home the point

Game 8
VIP is out of book first on move 5
the first game in the match where neither computer 0-0's
Excalibur has 2N's vs R+P when on move 28 it gets lost in the tactical possibilities and winds up losing a N for nothing
i guess this game it was the Ex's turn to bollix up a perfectly even position

Game 9
The Nc3 opening requirement and Ex is out of book on the second move!
An evenly played game through-out with no overt blunders
a drawn R+P vs R ending is reached and i called for a cease fire

I called the game a draw here for 3 reasons..
1)it is a dead draw
2)the computers can play on from here ad nausea...shuffling their K's and R's and then
moving a P to reset the 50 move rule
3)it is the first drawn game of the match and with the match still
tied...it brings the suspense for the last and final game up to a fevered pitch

Score tied...4.5-4.5

10th And Final game to be played

Next Year Regards
